The sons of Reuben, the first-born of Israel. (He was indeed the first-born, but because he disgraced the couch of his father his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, son of Israel, so that he is not listed in the family records according to birthright.1 Filii quoque Ruben primogeniti Israël. (Ipse quippe fuit primogenitus ejus : sed cum violasset thorum patris sui, data sunt primogenita ejus filiis Joseph filii Israël, et non est ille reputatus in primogenitum.
Judah, in fact, became powerful among his brothers, so that the ruler came from him, though the birthright had been Joseph's.)2 Porro Judas, qui erat fortissimus inter fratres suos, de stirpe ejus principes germinati sunt : primogenita autem reputata sunt Joseph.)
The sons of Reuben, the first-born of Israel, were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.3 Filii ergo Ruben primogeniti Israël : Enoch, et Phallu, Esron, et Carmi.
His son was Joel, whose son was Shemaiah, whose son was Gog, whose son was Shimei,4 Filii Joël : Samia filius ejus, Gog filius ejus, Semei filius ejus,

whose son was Beerah, whom Tiglath-pileser, the king of Assyria, took into exile; he was a prince of the Reubenites.6 Beera filius ejus, quem captivum duxit Thelgathphalnasar rex Assyriorum, et fuit princeps in tribu Ruben.
His brothers who belonged to his clans, when they were listed in the family records according to their descendants, were: Jeiel, the chief, and Zechariah,7 Fratres autem ejus, et universa cognatio ejus, quando numerabantur per familias suas, habuerunt principes Jehiel, et Zachariam.
and Bela, son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel. The Reubenites lived in Aroer and as far as Nebo and Baal-meon;8 Porro Bala filius Azaz filii Samma filii Joël, ipse habitavit in Aroër usque ad Nebo, et Beelmeon.
toward the east they dwelt as far as the desert which extends from the Euphrates River, for they had much livestock in the land of Gilead.9 Contra orientalem quoque plagam habitavit usque ad introitum eremi, et flumen Euphraten. Multum quippe jumentorum numerum possidebant in terra Galaad.
During the reign of Saul they waged war with the Hagrites, and when they had defeated them they occupied their tents throughout the region east of Gilead.10 In diebus autem Saul præliati sunt contra Agareos, et interfecerunt illos, habitaveruntque pro eis in tabernaculis eorum, in omni plaga quæ respicit ad orientem Galaad.
The Gadites lived alongside them in the land of Bashan as far as Salecah.11 Filii vero Gad e regione eorum habitaverunt in terra Basan usque Selcha :
Joel was chief, Shapham was second in command, and Janai was judge in Bashan.12 Joël in capite, et Saphan secundus : Janai autem et Saphat in Basan.
Their brothers, corresponding to their ancestral houses, were: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber--seven.13 Fratres vero eorum secundum domos cognationum suarum, Michaël, et Mosollam, et Sebe, et Jorai, et Jachan, et Zie, et Heber, septem.
These were the sons of Abihail, son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz.14 Hi filii Abihail, filii Huri, filii Jara, filii Galaad, filii Michaël, filii Jesesi, filii Jeddo, filii Buz.
Ahi, son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was the head of their ancestral houses.15 Fratres quoque, filii Abdiel filii Guni, princeps domus in familiis suis.
They dwelt in Gilead, in Bashan and its towns, and in all the pasture lands of Sirion to the borders.16 Et habitaverunt in Galaad, et in Basan, et in viculis ejus, et in cunctis suburbanis Saron, usque ad terminos.
All were listed in the family records in the time of Jotham, king of Judah, and of Jeroboam, king of Israel.17 Omnes hi numerati sunt in diebus Joathan regis Juda, et in diebus Jeroboam regis Israël.
The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh were warriors, men who bore shield and sword and who drew the bow, trained in warfare--forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty men fit for military service.18 Filii Ruben, et Gad, et dimidiæ tribus Manasse, viri bellatores, scuta portantes et gladios, et tendentes arcum, eruditique ad prælia, quadraginta quatuor millia et septingenti sexaginta, procedentes ad pugnam.
When they waged war against the Hagrites and against Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab,19 Dimicaverunt contra Agareos : Ituræi vero, et Naphis, et Nodab
they received help so that they mastered the Hagrites and all who were with them. For during the battle they called on God, and he heard them because they had put their trust in him.20 præbuerunt eis auxilium. Traditique sunt in manus eorum Agarei, et universi qui fuerant cum eis, quia Deum invocaverunt cum præliarentur : et exaudivit eos, eo quod credidissent in eum.
Along with one hundred thousand men they also captured their livestock: fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand asses.21 Ceperuntque omnia quæ possederant, camelorum quinquaginta millia, et ovium ducenta quinquaginta millia, et asinos duo millia, et animas hominum centum millia.
Many had fallen in battle, for victory is from God; and they took over their dwelling place until the time of the exile.22 Vulnerati autem multi corruerunt : fuit enim bellum Domini. Habitaveruntque pro eis usque ad transmigrationem.
The numerous members of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land of Bashan as far as Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon.23 Filii quoque dimidiæ tribus Manasse possederunt terram a finibus Basan usque Baal, Hermon, et Sanir, et montem Hermon : ingens quippe numerus erat.
The following were the heads of their ancestral houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel--men who were warriors, famous men, and heads over their ancestral houses.24 Et hi fuerunt principes domus cognationis eorum : Epher, et Jesi, et Eliel, et Ezriel, et Jeremia, et Odoia, et Jediel, viri fortissimi et potentes, et nominati duces in familiis suis.
However, they offended the God of their fathers by lusting after the gods of the natives of the land, whom God had cleared out of their way.25 Reliquerunt autem Deum patrum suorum, et fornicati sunt post deos populorum terræ, quos abstulit Deus coram eis.
Therefore the God of Israel incited against them the anger of Pul, king of Assyria, and of Tiglath-pileser, king of Assyria, who deported the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh and brought them to Halah, Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, where they have remained to this day.26 Et suscitavit Deus Israël spiritum Phul regis Assyriorum, et spiritum Thelgathphalnasar regis Assur : et transtulit Ruben, et Gad, et dimidiam tribum Manasse, et adduxit eos in Lahela, et in Habor, et Ara, et fluvium Gozan, usque ad diem hanc.
The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
The children of Amram were Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
