NEW AMERICAN BIBLEBIBLIA
Abraham journeyed on to the region of the Negeb, where he settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he stayed in Gerar,1 Trasladóse de allí Abraham al país del Négueb, y se estableció entre Cadés y Sur. Habiéndose avecindado en Guerar,
he said of his wife Sarah, "She is my sister." So Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent and took Sarah.2 decía Abraham de su mujer Sara: «Es mi hermana.» Entonces el rey de Guerar, Abimélek, envió por Sara y la tomó.
But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, "You are about to die because of the woman you have taken, for she has a husband."3 Pero vino Dios a Abimélek en un sueño nocturno y le dijo: «Date muerto por esa mujer que has tomado, y que está casada.»
Abimelech, who had not approached her, said: "O Lord, would you slay a man even though he is innocent?4 Abimélek, que no se había acercado a ella, dijo: «Señor, ¿es que asesinas a la gente aunque sea honrada?
He himself told me, 'She is my sister,' and she herself also stated, 'He is my brother.' I did it in good faith and with clean hands."5 ¿No me dijo él a mí: “Es mi hermana”, y ella misma dijo: “Es mi hermano?” Con corazón íntegro y con manos limpias he procedido.»
God answered him in the dream: "Yes, I know you did it in good faith. In fact, it was I who kept you from sinning against me; that is why I did not let you touch her.6 Y le dijo Dios en el sueño: «Ya sé yo también que con corazón íntegro has procedido, como que yo mismo te he estorbado de faltar contra mí. Por eso no te he dejado tocarla.
Therefore, return the man's wife--as a spokesman he will intercede for you--that your life may be saved. If you do not return her, you can be sure that you and all who are yours will certainly die."7 Pero ahora devuelve la mujer a ese hombre, porque es un profeta; él rogará por ti para que vivas. Pero si no la devuelves, sábete que morirás sin remedio, tú y todos los tuyos.»
Early the next morning Abimelech called all his court officials and informed them of everything that had happened, and the men were horrified.8 Levantóse Abimélek de mañana, llamó a todos sus siervos y les refirió todas estas cosas; los hombres se asustaron mucho.
Then Abimelech summoned Abraham and said to him: "How could you do this to us! What wrong did I do to you that you should have brought such monstrous guilt on me and my kingdom? You have treated me in an intolerable way.9 Luego llamó Abimélek a Abraham, y le dijo: «¿ Qué has hecho con nosotros, o en qué te he faltado, para que trajeras sobre mí y mi reino una falta tan grande? Lo que no se hace has hecho conmigo.»
What were you afraid of," he asked him, "that you should have done such a thing?"10 Y dijo Abimélek a Abraham: «¿Qué te ha movido a hacer esto?»
"I was afraid," answered Abraham, "because I thought there would surely be no fear of God in this place, and so they would kill me on account of my wife.11 Dijo Abraham: «Es que me dije: “Seguramente no hay temor de Dios en este lugar, y van a asesinarme por mi mujer.”
Besides, she is in truth my sister, but only my father's daughter, not my mother's; and so she became my wife.12 Pero es que, además, es cierto que es hermana mía, hija de mi padre aunque no de mi madre, y vino a ser mi mujer.
When God sent me wandering from my father's house, I asked her: 'Would you do me this favor? In whatever place we come to, say that I am your brother.'"13 Y desde que Dios me hizo vagar lejos de mi familia, le dije a ella: Vas a hacerme este favor: a dondequiera que lleguemos, dices de mí: Es mi hermano.»
Then Abimelech took flocks and herds and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham; and after he restored his wife Sarah to him,14 Tomó Abimélek ovejas y vacas, siervos y esclavas, se los dio a Abraham, y le devolvió su mujer Sara.
he said, "Here, my land lies at your disposal; settle wherever you please."15 Y dijo Abimélek: «Ahí tienes mi país por delante: quédate donde se te antoje.»
To Sarah he said: "See, I have given your brother a thousand shekels of silver. Let that serve you as a vindication before all who are with you; your honor has been preserved with everyone."16 A Sara le dijo: «Mira, he dado a tu hermano mil monedas de plata, que serán para ti y para los que están contigo como venda en los ojos, y de todo esto serás justificada.»
Abraham then interceded with God, and God restored health to Abimelech, that is, to his wife and his maidservants, so that they could bear children;17 Abraham rogó a Dios, y Dios curó a Abimélek, a su mujer, y a sus concubinas, que tuvieron hijos;
for God had tightly closed every womb in Abimelech's household on account of Abraham's wife Sarah.18 pues Yahveh había cerrado absolutamente toda matriz de casa de Abimélek, por lo de Sara, la mujer de Abraham.
