1 ויבא יוסף ויגד לפרעה ויאמר אבי ואחי וצאנם ובקרם וכל אשר להם באו מארץ כנען והנם בארץ גשן	1 So Joseph went and told Pharaoh, 'My father and brothers have arrived from Canaan with their flocksand cattle and al their possessions. Here they are, in the region of Goshen.'
2 ומקצה אחיו לקח חמשה אנשים ויצגם לפני פרעה	2 He had taken five of his brothers, and he now presented them to Pharaoh.
3 ויאמר פרעה אל אחיו מה מעשיכם ויאמרו אל פרעה רעה צאן עבדיך גם אנחנו גם אבותינו	3 Pharaoh asked his brothers, 'What is your occupation?' and they gave Pharaoh the answer, 'Yourservants are shepherds, like our fathers before us.'
4 ויאמרו אל פרעה לגור בארץ באנו כי אין מרעה לצאן אשר לעבדיך כי כבד הרעב בארץ כנען ועתה ישבו נא עבדיך בארץ גשן	4 They went on to tel Pharaoh, 'We have come to stay in this country for the time being, since there isno pasturage for your servants' flocks, Canaan being stricken with famine. So now please al ow your servants tosettle in the region of Goshen.'
5 ויאמר פרעה אל יוסף לאמר אביך ואחיך באו אליך	5 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph,'They may stay in the region of Goshen, and if you know of any capablemen among them, put them in charge of my own livestock.' Jacob and his sons went to Egypt where Josephwas. Pharaoh king of Egypt heard about this and said to Joseph, 'Your father and brothers have come to you.
6 ארץ מצרים לפניך הוא במיטב הארץ הושב את אביך ואת אחיך ישבו בארץ גשן ואם ידעת ויש בם אנשי חיל ושמתם שרי מקנה על אשר לי	6 The country of Egypt is open to you: settle your father and brothers in the best region.'
7 ויבא יוסף את יעקב אביו ויעמדהו לפני פרעה ויברך יעקב את פרעה	7 Joseph brought his father and presented him to Pharaoh. Jacob paid his respects to Pharaoh.
8 ויאמר פרעה אל יעקב כמה ימי שני חייך	8 Pharaoh asked Jacob, 'How many years have you lived?'
9 ויאמר יעקב אל פרעה ימי שני מגורי שלשים ומאת שנה מעט ורעים היו ימי שני חיי ולא השיגו את ימי שני חיי אבתי בימי מגוריהם	9 Jacob said to Pharaoh, 'The years of my stay on earth add up to one hundred and thirty years. Fewand unhappy my years have been, fal ing short of my ancestors' years in their stay on earth.'
10 ויברך יעקב את פרעה ויצא מלפני פרעה	10 Jacob then took leave of Pharaoh and withdrew from his presence.
11 ויושב יוסף את אביו ואת אחיו ויתן להם אחזה בארץ מצרים במיטב הארץ בארץ רעמסס כאשר צוה פרעה	11 Joseph then settled his father and brothers, giving them land holdings in Egypt, in the best part of thecountry, the region of Rameses, as Pharaoh had ordered.
12 ויכלכל יוסף את אביו ואת אחיו ואת כל בית אביו לחם לפי הטף	12 Joseph provided his father, brothers and al his father's family with food, down to the least of them.
13 ולחם אין בכל הארץ כי כבד הרעב מאד ותלה ארץ מצרים וארץ כנען מפני הרעב	13 And on al the earth around there was now no food anywhere, for the famine had grown very severe,and Egypt and Canaan were both weak with hunger.
14 וילקט יוסף את כל הכסף הנמצא בארץ מצרים ובארץ כנען בשבר אשר הם שברים ויבא יוסף את הכסף ביתה פרעה	14 Joseph accumulated al the money to be found in Egypt and Canaan, in exchange for the suppliesbeing handed out, and put the money in Pharaoh's palace.
15 ויתם הכסף מארץ מצרים ומארץ כנען ויבאו כל מצרים אל יוסף לאמר הבה לנו לחם ולמה נמות נגדך כי אפס כסף	15 When al the money in Egypt and Canaan was exhausted, al the Egyptians came to Joseph,pleading, 'Give us food, unless you want us to die before your eyes! For our money has come to an end.'
16 ויאמר יוסף הבו מקניכם ואתנה לכם במקניכם אם אפס כסף	16 Joseph replied, 'Hand over your livestock and I shal issue you food in exchange for your livestock, ifyour money has come to an end.'
17 ויביאו את מקניהם אל יוסף ויתן להם יוסף לחם בסוסים ובמקנה הצאן ובמקנה הבקר ובחמרים וינהלם בלחם בכל מקנהם בשנה ההוא	17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for horses andlivestock, whether sheep or cattle, and for donkeys. Thus he saw them through that year with food in exchangefor all their livestock.
18 ותתם השנה ההוא ויבאו אליו בשנה השנית ויאמרו לו לא נכחד מאדני כי אם תם הכסף ומקנה הבהמה אל אדני לא נשאר לפני אדני בלתי אם גויתנו ואדמתנו	18 When that year was over, they came to him the next year, and said to him, 'We cannot hide it frommy lord: the truth is, our money has run out and the livestock is in my lord's possession. There is nothing left formy lord except our bodies and our land.
19 למה נמות לעיניך גם אנחנו גם אדמתנו קנה אתנו ואת אדמתנו בלחם ונהיה אנחנו ואדמתנו עבדים לפרעה ותן זרע ונחיה ולא נמות והאדמה לא תשם	19 If we and our land are not to perish, take us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our landwil become Pharaoh's serfs; only give us seed, so that we can survive and not die and the land not revert todesert!'
20 ויקן יוסף את כל אדמת מצרים לפרעה כי מכרו מצרים איש שדהו כי חזק עלהם הרעב ותהי הארץ לפרעה	20 Thus Joseph acquired all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh, since one by one the Egyptians sold theirfields, so hard pressed were they by the famine; and the whole country passed into Pharaoh's possession,
21 ואת העם העביר אתו לערים מקצה גבול מצרים ועד קצהו	21 while the people he reduced to serfdom from one end of Egypt to the other.
22 רק אדמת הכהנים לא קנה כי חק לכהנים מאת פרעה ואכלו את חקם אשר נתן להם פרעה על כן לא מכרו את אדמתם	22 The only land he did not acquire belonged to the priests, for the priests received an al owance fromPharaoh and lived on the al owance that Pharaoh gave them. Hence they had no need to sel their land.
23 ויאמר יוסף אל העם הן קניתי אתכם היום ואת אדמתכם לפרעה הא לכם זרע וזרעתם את האדמה	23 Then Joseph said to the people, 'This is how we stand: I have bought you out, with your land, onPharaoh's behalf. Here is seed for you to sow the land.
24 והיה בתבואת ונתתם חמישית לפרעה וארבע הידת יהיה לכם לזרע השדה ולאכלכם ולאשר בבתיכם ולאכל לטפכם	24 But of the harvest you must give a fifth to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you can have for sowingyour fields, to provide food for yourselves and your households, and food for your children.'
25 ויאמרו החיתנו נמצא חן בעיני אדני והיינו עבדים לפרעה	25 'You have saved our lives!' they replied. 'If it please my lord, we will become serfs to Pharaoh.'
26 וישם אתה יוסף לחק עד היום הזה על אדמת מצרים לפרעה לחמש רק אדמת הכהנים לבדם לא היתה לפרעה	26 So Joseph made a law, still in force today, as regards the soil of Egypt, that one-fifth should go toPharaoh. Only the land of the priests did not go to Pharaoh.
27 וישב ישראל בארץ מצרים בארץ גשן ויאחזו בה ויפרו וירבו מאד	27 Thus Israel settled in Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there; they were fruitfuland grew very numerous.
28 ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים שבע עשרה שנה ויהי ימי יעקב שני חייו שבע שנים וארבעים ומאת שנה	28 Jacob lived seventeen years in Egypt; thus Jacob's total age came to a hundred and forty-sevenyears.
29 ויקרבו ימי ישראל למות ויקרא לבנו ליוסף ויאמר לו אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך שים נא ידך תחת ירכי ועשית עמדי חסד ואמת אל נא תקברני במצרים	29 When Israel's time to die drew near he sent for his son Joseph and said to him, 'If you real y love me,place your hand under my thigh as pledge that you will act with faithful love towards me: do not bury me inEgypt!
30 ושכבתי עם אבתי ונשאתני ממצרים וקברתני בקברתם ויאמר אנכי אעשה כדברך	30 When I lie down with my ancestors, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their tomb.' 'I shal do asyou say,' he replied.
31 ויאמר השבעה לי וישבע לו וישתחו ישראל על ראש המטה	31 'Swear to me,' he insisted. So he swore to him, and Israel sank back on the pil ow.
