1 Era un uomo dimorante in Babilonia per nome Joachim.	1 And there was a man living in Babylon, and his name was Joakim.
2 E prese per moglie una donna chiamata Susanna, figlia di Helcia, grandemente bella, e timorata di Dio;	2 And he received a wife named Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah, who was very beautiful and God-fearing.
3 Imperocché i genitori di lei, che erano giusti, avevano istruita la figliuola secondo la legge di Mosé.	3 For her parents, because they were righteous, had educated their daughter according to the law of Moses.
4 E Joachim era uomo assai ricco, ed aveva un giardino presso alla sua casa, e da lui andavano in gran numero i Giudei, perchè egli era il più ragguardevole di tutti.	4 But Joakim was very wealthy, and he had an orchard near his house, and the Jews flocked to him, because he was the most honorable of them all.
5 E furono in quell'anno eletti giudici del popolo due seniori di quelli, de quali disse il Signore, che in Babilonia era venuta l'iniquità dai vecchi giudici, i quali sembravano rettori del popolo.	5 And two elder judges had been appointed among the people that year, about whom the Lord has said, “Iniquity has come out of Babylon, from the elder judges, who seemed to govern the people.”
6 Questi frequentava la casa di Joachim, e vi andavano a trovarli tutti quelli, che avevano liti.	6 These frequented the house of Joakim, and all came to them, who had need of judgment.
7 E quando il popolo sul mezzogiorno se ne andava, andava Susanna a passeggiare nel giardino di suo marito.	7 But when the people departed at noontime, Susanna went in and walked around in her husband’s orchard.
8 E i vecchioni la vedevano ogni di andare a passeggiare, e arsero di cattivo desiderio verso di lei:	8 And the elders saw her entering and walking around every day, and they were inflamed with desire towards her.
9 E perderono il lume dell'intelletto, e gli occhi chiusero per non vedere il ciclo, e per non ricordarsi de' suoi se veri giudizj.	9 And they perverted their reason and turned away their eyes, so that they would not look to heaven, nor call to mind just judgments.
10 Erano adunque tutti due presi dall'amore di lei, né si comunicarono l'uno all'altro la loro pena;	10 And so they were both wounded by the love of her, yet they did not reveal their grief to one another.
11 Imperocché si vergognavano di svelarsi la propria passione, cui bramavano di sfogare.	11 For they were ashamed to reveal to each other their desire, wanting to lie with her.
12 E con maggior sollecitudine si studiavano ogni dì di vederla. E uno di essi disse all'altro:	12 And so they watched carefully every day to see her. And one said to the other,
13 Andiamo a casa, che è ora di desinare. E se n'andarono, e si separarono,	13 “Let us go home, for it is lunch time.” And going out, they departed one from another.
14 E ritornarono, e si trovarono insieme, e domandatosi l'uno all'altro il motivo, confessarono la propria passione, e allora convennero del tempo, in cui potesser trovarla sola.	14 And returning again, they came to the same place, and, each asking the other the reason, they admitted their desire. And then they agreed to set a time when they would be able to find her alone.
15 E mentre stavano aspettando il giorno a proposito, entrò una volta Susanna nel giardino, come sempre soleva, con due sole fanciulle, e volle lavarsi nel giardino, perché era caldo.	15 But it happened, while they watched for an opportune day, that she entered at a particular time, just as yesterday and the day before, with only two maids, and she wanted to wash in the orchard, because it was so hot.
16 E non eravi alcuno, eccetto i due vecchioni nascosti, i quali la contemplavano.	16 And there was no one there, except the two elders in hiding, and they were studying her.
17 Disse ella adunque alle fanciulle: portatemi l'unguento, e i profumi, e chiudete le porte del giardino, affinché io possa bagnarmi.	17 And so she said to the maids, “Bring me oil and ointments, and shut the doors of the orchard, so that I may wash.”
18 E quelle fecero com ella avea comandato, e chiuser le porte del giardino, ed usciron per una porta di dietro per portarle quello, ch'ella avea chiesto, ed elle ignoravano, che i vecchioni fosser dentro nascosi.	18 And they did as she ordered them. And they shut the doors of the orchard and left through a back door to fetch what she required, and they did not know that the elders were hiding within.
19 E partite, che furono le fanciulle, si levarono i due vecchioni, e corsero a lei, e dissero:	19 But when the maids had departed, the two elders arose and hurried to her, and they said,
20 Ecco chiuse le porte del giardino, e nissun ci vede, e noi siamo accesi di te: fa adunque a modo nostro, e cedi a' nostri desiderj;	20 “Behold, the doors of the orchard are closed, and no one can see us, and we are in desire for you. Because of these things, consent to us and lie with us.
21 Che se negherai, noi renderemo testimonianza contro di te, e diremo, che era ecco un giovinetto, e che per questo hai fatto andar via le fanciulle.	21 But if you will not, we will bear witness against you that a young man was with you and, for this reason, you sent your maids away from you.”
22 Sospirò Susanna, e disse: io mi trovo in istrettezze per ogni parte: imperocché s'io fo questo, è morte per me, e se noi fo, non iscamperò dalle vostre mani.	22 Susanna sighed and said, “I am closed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death to me; yet if I do not do it, I will not escape your hands.
23 Ma è meglio per me il cader nelle mani vostre senza aver fatta tal cosa, che peccare nel cospetto del Signore.	23 But it is better for me to fall unavoidably into your hands, than to sin in the sight of the Lord.”
24 E Susanna gettò un forte strido: ed alzaron la voce anche i vecchioni contro di lei.	24 And Susanna cried out with a loud voice, but the elders also cried out against her.
25 E un di loro corse alle porte del giardino, e le aperse.	25 And one of them hurried to the door of the orchard and opened it.
26 Ed avendo i servitori di casa sentito rumore nel giardino, vi accorsero per la porta di dietro per veder quello, che fosse,	26 And so, when the servants of the house heard the outcry in the orchard, they rushed in by the back door to see what was happening.
27 Ed avendo parlato i vecchioni, ne restarono i servi grandemente confusi, perché mai cosa tale non era stata detta di Susanna. E venuto il dì seguente,	27 But after the old men had spoken, the servants were greatly ashamed, for there had never been anything of this kind said about Susanna. And it happened on the next day,
28 Ed essendo concorso il popolo alla casa del marito di lei, vi andarono anche i due vecchioni pieni di iniqui disegni contro Susanna per ucciderla.	28 when the people came to Joakim her husband, that the two appointed elders also came, full of wicked plans against Susanna, in order to put her to death.
29 E dissero alla presenza del popolo: mandate a chiamare Susanna figliuola di Helcia, moglie di Joachim: e tosto mandarono,	29 And they said before the people, “Send for Susanna, daughter of Hilkiah, the wife of Joakim.” And immediately they sent for her.
30 Ed ella venne insieme co' suoi genitori, e co' figliuoli, e con tutti i suoi parenti.	30 And she arrived with her parents, and sons, and all her relatives.
31 Or Susanna era molto delicata, e molto bella.	31 Moreover, Susanna was exceedingly delicate and beautiful in appearance.
32 Ma quelli iniqui ordinarono, che si scoprisse (imperocché ella aveva il suo velo) per cosi almeno saziarsi di sua bellezza.	32 But those wicked ones commanded that her face should be uncovered, (for she was covered,) so that at least they might be satisfied with her beauty.
33 E piangevano i suoi, e tutti que', che la conoscevano.	33 Therefore, her own and all who knew her wept.
34 E alzatisi i due vecchioni in mezzo al popolo, posero le loro mani sul capo di lei.	34 Yet the two appointed elders, rising up in the midst of the people, set their hands upon her head.
35 Ed ella piangendo alzò al cielo gli occhi; imperocché il suo cuore avea fiducia nel Signore.	35 And weeping, she gazed up to heaven, for her heart had faith in the Lord.
36 E dissero i vecchioni: mentre noi passeggiavamo soli pel giardino, venne costei con due fanciulle, e chiuse le porte del giardino, e licenziò le fanciulle.	36 And the appointed elders said, “While we were talking a walk in the orchard alone, this one came in with two maids, and she shut the doors of the orchard, and she sent the maids away from her.
37 E si accostò a lei un giovinetto, che vi era ascoso, e peccò con lei.	37 And a young man came to her, who was in hiding, and he lay down with her.
38 E noi essendo in un angolo del giardino, e veggendo l'opera rea, corremmo verso di loro, e li vedemmo peccare.	38 Furthermore, since we were in a corner of the orchard, seeing this wickedness, we ran up to them, and we saw them consorting together.
39 Ma colui non potemmo noi pigliare, perché egli ne poteva più di noi, e aperte le porte saltò fuora:	39 And, indeed, we were unable to catch him, because he was stronger than us, and opening the doors, he leaped out.
40 Ma avendo presa costei, la interrogammo chi fosse il giovanotto, e non volle manifestarcelo. Di ciò siam noi testimoni.	40 But, since we had apprehended this one, we demanded to know who the young man was, but she was unwilling to tell us. On this matter, we are witnesses.”
41 La moltitudine diede retta a costoro, come vecchi, e giudici del popolo, e la condannarono alla morte.	41 The multitude believed them, just as if they were elders and the judges of the people, and they condemned her to death.
42 E Susanna ad alta voce esclamò, e disse: Dio eterno, che le occulte cose conosci, che sai tutte le cose, prima che siano avvenute,	42 But Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said, “Eternal God, who knows what is hidden, who knows all things before they happen,
43 Tu sai, come costoro hanno detto falso testimonio contro di me: ed ecco che io muoio, mentre non ho fatta alcuna di quelle cose, che costoro hanno inventate contro di me.	43 you know that they have borne false witness against me, and behold, I must die, though I have done none of these things, which these men have maliciously invented against me.”
44 E il Signore esaudì la sua voce.	44 But the Lord heeded her voice.
45 E mentre era condotta a morire, il Signore suscitò lo Spirito santo di un tenero giovinetto chiamato Daniele;	45 And when she was led away to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young boy, whose name was Daniel.
46 Ed ei gridò ad alta voce: Io son puro dal sangue di lei.	46 And he cried out with a loud voice, “I am clean of the blood of this one.”
47 E rivoltosi a lui tutto il popolo, disse: Che è quello, che tu hai detto?	47 And all the people, turning back towards him, said, “What is this word that you are saying?”
48 Ed egli stando in mezzo ad essi, disse: Cosi voi stolti figliuoli d'Israele senza matura giudizio, e senza conoscere la verità, condannata avete una figliuola d'Israele?	48 But he, while standing in the midst of them, said, “Are you so foolish, sons of Israel, that without judging and without knowing what the truth is, you have condemned a daughter of Israel?
49 Tornate in giudizio; perocché costoro han detto testimonio falso contro di lei.	49 Return to judgment, because they have spoken false witness against her.”
50 Tornò adunque indietro il popolo in fretta, e i vecchioni dissero a lui: vieni, e siedi in mezzo tra noi, e insegna a noi, dappoiché Dio ha dato a te l'onore della vecchiezza.	50 Therefore, the people returned with haste, and the old men said to him, “Come and sit down in our midst and show us, since God has given you the honor of old age.”
51 E Daniele disse al popolo: separate costoro l'uno lontan dall'altro, ed io gli esaminerò.	51 And Daniel said to them, “Separate these at a distance from one another, and I will judge between them.”
52 E separati, che furono l'un dall' altro, chiamò uno di loro, e gli disse: vecchio di giorni rei, ora son venuti al palio i tuoi peccati fatti per l'addietro,	52 And so, when they were divided, one from the other, he called one of them, and he said to him, “You deep-rooted ancient evil, now your sins have come out, which you have committed before,
53 Dando sentenze ingiuste, opprimendo gli innocenti, e liberando i malvagi, mentre il Signore ha detto: non ucciderai l'innocente, ed il giusto.	53 judging unjust judgments, oppressing the innocent, and setting free the guilty, though the Lord declares, ‘The innocent and the just you must not put to death.’
54 Or adunque se tu la hai veduta, di' tu sotto qual pianta gli abbi veduti confabular tra loro? E quegli disse: sotto un lentisco.	54 Now then, if you saw her, declare under which tree you saw them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen mastic tree.”
55 E Daniele disse: certamente a spese della tua testata hai detto bugia: imperocché ecco, che l'Angelo di Dio per sentenza di lui ti dividerà pel mezzo.	55 But Daniel said, “Truly, you have lied against your own head. For behold, the angel of God, having received the sentence from him, will split you down the middle.
56 E rimandato questo, comandò, che venisse l'altro, e gli disse: stirpe di Canaan, e non di Giuda, la bellezza ti affascinò, e la passione sovverti il cuor tuo;	56 And, having put him aside, he commanded the other to approach, and he said to him, “You offspring of Canaan, and not of Judah, beauty has deceived you, and desire has perverted your heart.
57 Cosi voi facevate alle figliuole di Israele, e queste avendo paura parlavan con voi; ma una figliuola di Giuda non ha sofferta la vostra iniquità.	57 Thus did you do to the daughters of Israel, and they, out of fear, consorted with you, but a daughter of Judah would not tolerate your iniquity.
58 Or adunque di' a me sotto qual albero li trovasti a discorrer insieme? E quegli disse: sotto un' elce.	58 Now then, declare to me, under which tree you caught them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen oak tree.”
59 E disse Daniele a lui: veramente tu pure a spese della tua testa hai detto menzogna: imperocché ti aspetta l'Angelo del Signore con in mano la spada per fenderti pel mezzo, e farti morire.	59 And Daniel said to him, “Truly, you also have lied against your own head. For the angel of the Lord waits, holding a sword, to cut you down the middle and put you to death.”
60 Sclamò allora tutta l'adunanza ad alta voce, e benedissero Dio, il qual salva quegli, che in lui sperano.	60 And then the entire assembly cried out in a loud voice, and they blessed God, who saves those who hope in him.
61 E si levaron su contro i due vecchi, i quali Daniele avea di propria lo bocca convinti di aver detto falso testimonio, e fecero ad essi quello, che egli no avean malamente fatto contro il prossimo loro;	61 And they rose up against the two appointed elders, (for Daniel had convicted them, by their own mouth, of bearing false witness,) and they did to them just as they had wickedly done against their neighbor,
62 Mettendo in esecuzione la legge di Mosè, e gli uccisero: e fu salvato il sangue innocente in quel giorno.	62 so as to act according to the law of Moses. And they put them to death, and innocent blood was saved on that day.
63 Ed Helcia, e la sua moglie diedero lode a Dio per la figliuola loro Susanna insieme con Joachim suo marito, e con tutti i parenti, perché non fu trovato in lei nulla di men, che onesto.	63 But Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter, Susanna, with Joakim, her husband, and all her relatives, because there had been found in her no disgrace.
64 E Daniele da quel di in poi divenne grande nel cospetto del popolo.	64 And so Daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day, and thereafter.
65 E il re Astiage andò dietro a' padri suoi, e Ciro Persiano gli succedette nel regno.	65 And king Astyages was laid to rest with his fathers. And Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom.
