1 Ma Eliphaz di Theman rispose, e disse:	1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:
2 Se noi imprenderemo a parlarti, forse lo prenderai in mala parte; ma chi può rattener la parola, che gli viene alla bocca?	2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?
3 Tu fosti già il maestro di molti, e alle braccia stanche rendesti vigore:	3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.
4 Le tue parole furon sostegno ai vacillanti, ed alle tremanti ginocchia desti conforto:	4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.
5 Ma ora, che il flagello è venuto sopra di te, tu se' abbattuto; ti ha toccato, e ti sbigottisci.	5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.
6 Dov' è la tua pietà, la tua fortezza, la tua pazienza, e la perfezione del tuo operare?	6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?
7 Rammentati di grazia, qual mai innocente perì? e quando mai furono schiantati i giusti?	7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?
8 Io vidi anzi coloro, che coltìvaron l'iniquità, e seminavano all'anni, e affanni mietevano,	8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.
9 Perire a un soffio di Dio, ed essere consunti da un alito dell'ira di lui:	9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.
10 Peri il lion che ruggiva, e la lionessa che urlava, e i denti de' lioncelli furono spezzati.	10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;
11 La tigre rimase estinta per mancanza di preda, e i lioncini furono spersi.	11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 Or un' arcana parola fa detta a me, e quasi di fuga il mio orecchio ne intese il debil suono.	12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.
13 Nell'orrore di una visione notturna, quando il sonno suole impossessarsi degli uomini,	13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
14 Fui preso da timore, e da tremito, e tutte le mie ossa furon commosse:	14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.
15 E passando davanti a me uno spirito, si arricciarono i peli della mia carne.	15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 Mi apparve uno, il volto del quale non era a me noto, un simulacro dinanzi agli occhi miei, e udii un suono come di aura leggera.	16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:
17 Forse un uomo messo al paragone con Dio sarà dichiarato giusto, o sarà egli più puro del suo faccitore?	17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?
18 Ecco che quelli che a lui servono non hanno stabilità, e negli Angeli suoi trova egli difetto.	18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.
19 Quanto più quelli, che abitano case di fango, i quali hanno per fondamento la polvere, saran consunti come da verme?	19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!
20 Dal mattino alla sera saranno troncati, e perché nissun ha intelligenza, periranno in eterno.	20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.
21 E quei, che tra loro primeggiano, saran tolti dal mondo: morranno, e non da sapienti.	21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."
