1 Allora Giuda ebbe contezza dei Romani, e come essi aveano gran possanza, e si prestavano a tutte quello che era lor domandato, e che con tutti quelli che si erano rivolti verso di loro avean fermato amicizia, e che erano grandemente potenti.	1 Now Judas had heard of the the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them;
2 E senti parlare delle loro guerre e delle azioni grandi fatte da loro nella Galazia, di cui eransi renduti padroni, e l'avean soggettata al tributo:	2 And that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute;
3 E quanto grandi cose aveano operate nella Spagna, e come avean ridotta in lor potere quelle miniere d'argento e di oro, e avean conquistato tutto quel paese col consiglio e colla pazienza.	3 And what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there;
4 E aveano soggiogati dei paesi grandemente rimoti, e sconfitti de're, che si erano mossi contro di loro dagli ultimi confini del mondo, e gli aveano totalmente abbattuti: e che tutti gli altri pagavan ad essi tributo ogni anno:	4 And that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year:
5 E che avean vinto in battaglia e soggiogato Filippo e Perseo re de' Cethei, e gli altri che avean prese l'armi contro di loro:	5 Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them:
6 E che Antioco il grande re di Asia, il quale era venuto a battaglia con essi, avendo cento venti elefanti e cavalleria e cocchi con un grandissimo esercito, era stato sconfitto da loro:	6 How also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them;
7 E come lo ebber vivo in loro potere, e gli ordinarono, che dovesse pagare egli, e i suoi successori nel regno un forte tributo, e desse ostaggi secondo il convenuto.	7 And how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,
8 E il paese degl'Indiani e i Medi e i Lidi, ottime provincie, le quali conquistate da essi le donarono al re Eumene:	8 And the country of India, and Media and Lydia and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes:
9 E come quelli, della Grecia fecer disegno di andare ad abbatterli, ed eglino lo seppero,	9 Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them;
10 E mandarono contro di essi un condottiere, e venner con essi alle mani, e ne fecero strage, e si menarono in schiavitù le loro mogli e i figliuoli, e diedero il sacco al loro paese, e conquistare le loro terre, e gettaron per terra le loro mura, e li ridussero in servitù, come sono anche in oggi.	10 And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:
11 E come desolarono, e ridussero in lor potere gli altri regni e le isole, le quali una volta avean prese le armi contro di loro.	11 It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them;
12 Ma col loro amici e con quelli che si fidavan di loro, mantenevan l'amicizia, e che si eran fatti padroni de' regni vicini e dei lontani, perché erano tumuli da tutti quelli, tra i quali giungeva la fama di essi:	12 But with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them:
13 E che regnavano quelli, a quali volevan dare aiuto per giungere al regno; e scacciavan dal trono quei, che volevano; e che si eran sommamente ingranditi.	13 Also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted:
14 E che con tutto questo nissuno portava il Diadema, né veste di porpora per grandeggiare.	14 Yet for all this none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby:
15 E aveano formato un Senato, e ogni giorno consultavano trecento venti persone, le quali ponderavano gli affari del popolo per far fare quello che era conveniente.	15 Moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered:
16 E ogni anno conferiscono la loro magistratura ad un uomo, affinchè governi lo stato loro, e tutti obbediscano a un solo, e non v'è invidia, ne gelosia tra loro.	16 And that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emmulation among them.
17 E Giuda elesse Eupolemo figliuolo di Giovanni, figliuolo di Giacobbe, e Giasone figliuolo di Eleazaro, e mandogli a Roma per fare amicizia, e confederazione con essi:	17 In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them,
18 Affinché eglino li liberassero dal giogo dei Greci, perocche vedevano come questi riducevano in schiavitù il regna d'Israele.	18 And to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude.
19 E quelli fecero il viaggio di Roma, che era assai lungo, ed entrarono nella curia, e dissero:	19 They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said.
20 Giuda Maccabeo e i suoi fratelli e il popolo Giudeo ci han mandati a voi a stabilire con voi confederazione e pace, e perché ci scriviate tra i confederati e amici vostri.	20 Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends.
21 E quelli gradirono la proposizione.	21 So that matter pleased the Romans well.
22 Ed ecco il rescritto, che fu inciso in tavole di bronzo, e mandato a Gerusalemme, affinché ivi fosse pe' Giudei monumento di questa pace e confederazione.	22 And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy:
23 Felicità ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei nel mare e sulla terra in eterno, e sia lungi da essi la spada e l'inimico.	23 Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them,
24 Che se i Romani, o alcuno de' loro confederati in tutto il loro dominio, si troveranno i primi in guerra,	24 If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion,
25 La nazione de' Giudei darà loro con pienezza di cuore soccorso, secondo che il tempo permetterà.	25 The people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart:
26 E ai combattenti non daranno, e non somministreranno i Romani nè armi, ne danaro, ne navi, che cosi è parato ai Romani; e quegli obbediranno loro senza riceverne soldo.	26 Neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore.
27 Parimente ancora se prima avverrà, che la nazione de' Giudei sia in guerra, i Romani la soccorreranno di buon cuore, secondo che il tempo ad essi il permetterà.	27 In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them:
28 E agli aiuti non daranno i Giudei grano, armi, denaro, navi, che cosi è paruto ai Romani; e quegli obbediranno ad essi senza frode:	28 Neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit.
29 Questa è la convenzione de' Romani coi Giudei.	29 According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews.
30 Che se in appresso o questi, o quelli brameranno o di aggiungere, o di levarne qualche cosa, lo faran di consenso scambievole, e sarà rato quello che aggiungeranno, o leveranno.	30 Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think to meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified.
31 Oltre a ciò riguardo alle ingiurie fatte ad essi dal re Demetrio, gli abbiamo scritto in questi termini: Per qual motivo hai renduto più grave il tuo giogo ai Giudei amici e confederali nostri?	31 And as touching the evils that Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews?
32 Se adunque eglino ricorreran di bel nuovo a noi, farem loro giustizia, e ti farem guerra per mare e per terra.	32 If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land.
