και προσεταξεν κυριος κητει μεγαλω καταπιειν τον ιωναν και ην ιωνας εν τη κοιλια του κητους τρεις ημερας και τρεις νυκτας1 And the Lord prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.
και προσηυξατο ιωνας προς κυριον τον θεον αυτου εκ της κοιλιας του κητους2 And Jonah prayed to the Lord, his God, from the belly of the fish.
και ειπεν εβοησα εν θλιψει μου προς κυριον τον θεον μου και εισηκουσεν μου εκ κοιλιας αδου κραυγης μου ηκουσας φωνης μου3 And he said: “I cried out to the Lord from my tribulation, and he heeded me. From the belly of hell, I cried out, and you heeded my voice.
απερριψας με εις βαθη καρδιας θαλασσης και ποταμοι με εκυκλωσαν παντες οι μετεωρισμοι σου και τα κυματα σου επ' εμε διηλθον4 And you have thrown me into the deep, in the heart of the sea, and a flood has encircled me. All your whirlpools and your waves have passed over me.
και εγω ειπα απωσμαι εξ οφθαλμων σου αρα προσθησω του επιβλεψαι προς τον ναον τον αγιον σου5 And I said: I am expelled from the sight of your eyes. Yet, truly, I will see your holy temple again.
περιεχυθη υδωρ μοι εως ψυχης αβυσσος εκυκλωσεν με εσχατη εδυ η κεφαλη μου εις σχισμας ορεων6 The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The abyss has walled me in. The ocean has covered my head.
κατεβην εις γην ης οι μοχλοι αυτης κατοχοι αιωνιοι και αναβητω φθορα ζωης μου κυριε ο θεος μου7 I descended to the base of the mountains. The bars of the earth have enclosed me forever. And you will raise up my life from corruption, Lord, my God.
εν τω εκλειπειν απ' εμου την ψυχην μου του κυριου εμνησθην και ελθοι προς σε η προσευχη μου εις ναον αγιον σου8 When my soul was in anguish within me, I called to mind the Lord, so that my prayer might come to you, to your holy temple.
φυλασσομενοι ματαια και ψευδη ελεος αυτων εγκατελιπον9 Those who in vain observe vanities, abandon their own mercy.
εγω δε μετα φωνης αινεσεως και εξομολογησεως θυσω σοι οσα ηυξαμην αποδωσω σοι σωτηριου τω κυριω10 But I, with a voice of praise, will sacrifice to you. I will repay whatever I have vowed to the Lord, because of my salvation.”
και προσεταγη τω κητει και εξεβαλεν τον ιωναν επι την ξηραν11 And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
