LXXNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
και ειπεν ιουδιθ εξαρχετε τω θεω μου εν τυμπανοις ασατε τω κυριω εν κυμβαλοις εναρμοσασθε αυτω ψαλμον και αινον υψουτε και επικαλεισθε το ονομα αυτου1 "Strike up the instruments, a song to my God with timbrels, chant to the Lord with cymbals; Sing to him a new song, exalt and acclaim his name.
οτι θεος συντριβων πολεμους κυριος οτι εις παρεμβολας αυτου εν μεσω λαου εξειλατο με εκ χειρος καταδιωκοντων με2 For the Lord is God; he crushes warfare, and sets his encampment among his people; he snatched me from the hands of my presecutors.
ηλθεν ασσουρ εξ ορεων απο βορρα ηλθεν εν μυριασι δυναμεως αυτου ων το πληθος αυτων ενεφραξεν χειμαρρους και η ιππος αυτων εκαλυψεν βουνους3 "The Assyrian came from the mountains of the north, with the myriads of his forces he came; Their numbers blocked the torrents, their horses covered the hills.
ειπεν εμπρησειν τα ορια μου και τους νεανισκους μου ανελειν εν ρομφαια και τα θηλαζοντα μου θησειν εις εδαφος και τα νηπια μου δωσειν εις προνομην και τας παρθενους μου σκυλευσαι4 He threatened to burn my land, put my youths to the sword, Dash my babes to the ground, make my children a prey, and seize my virgins as spoil.
κυριος παντοκρατωρ ηθετησεν αυτους εν χειρι θηλειας5 "But the Lord Almighty thwarted them, by a woman's hand he confounded them.
ου γαρ υπεπεσεν ο δυνατος αυτων υπο νεανισκων ουδε υιοι τιτανων επαταξαν αυτον ουδε υψηλοι γιγαντες επεθεντο αυτω αλλα ιουδιθ θυγατηρ μεραρι εν καλλει προσωπου αυτης παρελυσεν αυτον6 Not by youths was their mighty one struck down, nor did titans bring him low, nor huge giants attack him; But Judith, the daughter of Merari, by the beauty of her countenance disabled him.
εξεδυσατο γαρ στολην χηρευσεως αυτης εις υψος των πονουντων εν ισραηλ ηλειψατο το προσωπον αυτης εν μυρισμω7 She took off her widow's garb to raise up the afflicted in Israel. She anointed her face with fragrant oil;
και εδησατο τας τριχας αυτης εν μιτρα και ελαβεν στολην λινην εις απατην αυτου8 with a fillet she fastened her tresses, and put on a linen robe to beguile him.
το σανδαλιον αυτης ηρπασεν οφθαλμον αυτου και το καλλος αυτης ηχμαλωτισεν ψυχην αυτου διηλθεν ο ακινακης τον τραχηλον αυτου9 Her sandals caught his eyes, and her beauty captivated his mind. The sword cut through his neck.
εφριξαν περσαι την τολμαν αυτης και μηδοι το θρασος αυτης εταραχθησαν10 "The Persians were dismayed at her daring, the Medes appalled at her boldness.
τοτε ηλαλαξαν οι ταπεινοι μου και εφοβηθησαν οι ασθενουντες μου και επτοηθησαν υψωσαν την φωνην αυτων και ανετραπησαν11 When my lowly ones shouted, they were terrified; when my weaklings cried out, they trembled; at the sound of their war cry, they took to flight.
υιοι κορασιων κατεκεντησαν αυτους και ως παιδας αυτομολουντων ετιτρωσκον αυτους απωλοντο εκ παραταξεως κυριου μου12 Sons of slave girls pierced them through; the supposed sons of rebel mothers cut them down; they perished before the ranks of my Lord.
υμνησω τω θεω μου υμνον καινον κυριε μεγας ει και ενδοξος θαυμαστος εν ισχυι ανυπερβλητος13 "A new hymn I will sing to my God. O Lord, great are you and glorious, wonderful in power and unsurpassable.
σοι δουλευσατω πασα η κτισις σου οτι ειπας και εγενηθησαν απεστειλας το πνευμα σου και ωκοδομησεν και ουκ εστιν ος αντιστησεται τη φωνη σου14 Let your every creature serve you; for you spoke, and they were made, You sent forth your spirit, and they were created; no one can resist your word.
ορη γαρ εκ θεμελιων συν υδασιν σαλευθησεται πετραι δ' απο προσωπου σου ως κηρος τακησονται ετι δε τοις φοβουμενοις σε συ ευιλατευσεις αυτοις15 The mountains to their bases, and the seas, are shaken; the rocks, like wax, melt before your glance. "But to those who fear you, you are very merciful.
οτι μικρον πασα θυσια εις οσμην ευωδιας και ελαχιστον παν στεαρ εις ολοκαυτωμα σοι ο δε φοβουμενος τον κυριον μεγας δια παντος16 Though the sweet odor of every sacrifice is a trifle, and the fat of all holocausts but little in your sight, one who fears the Lord is forever great.
ουαι εθνεσιν επανιστανομενοις τω γενει μου κυριος παντοκρατωρ εκδικησει αυτους εν ημερα κρισεως δουναι πυρ και σκωληκας εις σαρκας αυτων και κλαυσονται εν αισθησει εως αιωνος17 "Woe to the nations that rise against my people! the Lord Almighty will requite them; in the day of judgment he will punish them: He will send fire and worms into their flesh, and they shall burn and suffer forever."
ως δε ηλθοσαν εις ιερουσαλημ προσεκυνησαν τω θεω και ηνικα εκαθαρισθη ο λαος ανηνεγκαν τα ολοκαυτωματα αυτων και τα εκουσια αυτων και τα δοματα18 The people then went to Jerusalem to worship God; when they were purified, they offered their holocausts, freewill offerings, and gifts.
και ανεθηκεν ιουδιθ παντα τα σκευη ολοφερνου οσα εδωκεν ο λαος αυτη και το κωνωπιον ο ελαβεν εαυτη εκ του κοιτωνος αυτου εις αναθημα τω θεω εδωκεν19 Judith dedicated, as a votive offering to God, all the things of Holofernes that the people had given her, as well as the canopy that she herself had taken from his bedroom.
και ην ο λαος ευφραινομενος εν ιερουσαλημ κατα προσωπον των αγιων επι μηνας τρεις και ιουδιθ μετ' αυτων κατεμεινεν20 For three months the people continued their celebration in Jerusalem before the sanctuary, and Judith remained with them.
μετα δε τας ημερας ταυτας ανεζευξεν εκαστος εις την κληρονομιαν αυτου και ιουδιθ απηλθεν εις βαιτυλουα και κατεμεινεν επι της υπαρξεως αυτης και εγενετο κατα τον καιρον αυτης ενδοξος εν παση τη γη21 When those days were over, each one returned to his inheritance. Judith went back to Bethulia and remained on her estate. For the rest of her life she was renowned throughout the land.
και πολλοι επεθυμησαν αυτην και ουκ εγνω ανηρ αυτην πασας τας ημερας της ζωης αυτης αφ' ης ημερας απεθανεν μανασσης ο ανηρ αυτης και προσετεθη προς τον λαον αυτου22 Many wished to marry her, but she gave herself to no man all the days of her life from the time of the death and burial of her husband, Manasseh.
και ην προβαινουσα μεγαλη σφοδρα και εγηρασεν εν τω οικω του ανδρος αυτης ετη εκατον πεντε και αφηκεν την αβραν αυτης ελευθεραν και απεθανεν εις βαιτυλουα και εθαψαν αυτην εν τω σπηλαιω του ανδρος αυτης μανασση23 She lived to be very old in the house of her husband, reaching the advanced age of a hundred and five. She died in Bethulia, where they buried her in the tomb of her husband, Manasseh;
και επενθησεν αυτην οικος ισραηλ ημερας επτα και διειλεν τα υπαρχοντα αυτης προ του αποθανειν αυτην πασι τοις εγγιστα μανασση του ανδρος αυτης και τοις εγγιστα του γενους αυτης24 and the house of Israel mourned her for seven days. Before she died, she distributed her goods to the relatives of her husband, Manasseh, and to her own relatives; and to the maid she gave her freedom.
και ουκ ην ετι ο εκφοβων τους υιους ισραηλ εν ταις ημεραις ιουδιθ και μετα το αποθανειν αυτην ημερας πολλας .25 During the life of Judith and for a long time after her death, no one again disturbed the Israelites.
