αδαμ δε εγνω ευαν την γυναικα αυτου και συλλαβουσα ετεκεν τον καιν και ειπεν εκτησαμην ανθρωπον δια του θεου1 Truly, Adam knew his wife Eve, who conceived and gave birth to Cain, saying, “I have obtained a man through God.”
και προσεθηκεν τεκειν τον αδελφον αυτου τον αβελ και εγενετο αβελ ποιμην προβατων καιν δε ην εργαζομενος την γην2 And again she gave birth to his brother Abel. But Abel was a pastor of sheep, and Cain was a farmer.
και εγενετο μεθ' ημερας ηνεγκεν καιν απο των καρπων της γης θυσιαν τω κυριω3 Then it happened, after many days, that Cain offered gifts to the Lord, from the fruits of the earth.
και αβελ ηνεγκεν και αυτος απο των πρωτοτοκων των προβατων αυτου και απο των στεατων αυτων και επειδεν ο θεος επι αβελ και επι τοις δωροις αυτου4 Abel likewise offered from the firstborn of his flock, and from their fat. And the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his gifts.
επι δε καιν και επι ταις θυσιαις αυτου ου προσεσχεν και ελυπησεν τον καιν λιαν και συνεπεσεν τω προσωπω5 Yet in truth, he did not look with favor on Cain and his gifts. And Cain was vehemently angry, and his countenance fell.
και ειπεν κυριος ο θεος τω καιν ινα τι περιλυπος εγενου και ινα τι συνεπεσεν το προσωπον σου6 And the Lord said to him: “Why are you angry? And why is your face fallen?
ουκ εαν ορθως προσενεγκης ορθως δε μη διελης ημαρτες ησυχασον προς σε η αποστροφη αυτου και συ αρξεις αυτου7 If you behave well, will you not receive? But if you behave badly, will not sin at once be present at the door? And so its desire will be within you, and you will be dominated by it.”
και ειπεν καιν προς αβελ τον αδελφον αυτου διελθωμεν εις το πεδιον και εγενετο εν τω ειναι αυτους εν τω πεδιω και ανεστη καιν επι αβελ τον αδελφον αυτου και απεκτεινεν αυτον8 And Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go outside.” And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and he put him to death.
και ειπεν ο θεος προς καιν που εστιν αβελ ο αδελφος σου ο δε ειπεν ου γινωσκω μη φυλαξ του αδελφου μου ειμι εγω9 And the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And he responded: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
και ειπεν ο θεος τι εποιησας φωνη αιματος του αδελφου σου βοα προς με εκ της γης10 And he said to him: “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the land.
και νυν επικαταρατος συ απο της γης η εχανεν το στομα αυτης δεξασθαι το αιμα του αδελφου σου εκ της χειρος σου11 Now, therefore, you will be cursed upon the land, which opened its mouth and received the blood of your brother at your hand.
οτι εργα την γην και ου προσθησει την ισχυν αυτης δουναι σοι στενων και τρεμων εση επι της γης12 When you work it, it will not give you its fruit; a vagrant and a fugitive shall you be upon the land.”
και ειπεν καιν προς τον κυριον μειζων η αιτια μου του αφεθηναι με13 And Cain said to the Lord: “My iniquity is too great to deserve kindness.
ει εκβαλλεις με σημερον απο προσωπου της γης και απο του προσωπου σου κρυβησομαι και εσομαι στενων και τρεμων επι της γης και εσται πας ο ευρισκων με αποκτενει με14 Behold, you have cast me out this day before the face of the earth, and from your face I will be hidden; and I will be a vagrant and a fugitive on the earth. Therefore, anyone who finds me will kill me.”
και ειπεν αυτω κυριος ο θεος ουχ ουτως πας ο αποκτεινας καιν επτα εκδικουμενα παραλυσει και εθετο κυριος ο θεος σημειον τω καιν του μη ανελειν αυτον παντα τον ευρισκοντα αυτον15 And the Lord said to him: “By no means will it be so; rather, whoever would kill Cain, will be punished sevenfold.” And the Lord placed a seal upon Cain, so that anyone who found him would not put him to death.
εξηλθεν δε καιν απο προσωπου του θεου και ωκησεν εν γη ναιδ κατεναντι εδεμ16 And so Cain, departing from the face of the Lord, lived as a fugitive on the earth, toward the eastern region of Eden.
και εγνω καιν την γυναικα αυτου και συλλαβουσα ετεκεν τον ενωχ και ην οικοδομων πολιν και επωνομασεν την πολιν επι τω ονοματι του υιου αυτου ενωχ17 Then Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. And he built a city, and he called its name by the name of his son, Enoch.
εγενηθη δε τω ενωχ γαιδαδ και γαιδαδ εγεννησεν τον μαιηλ και μαιηλ εγεννησεν τον μαθουσαλα και μαθουσαλα εγεννησεν τον λαμεχ18 Thereafter, Enoch conceived Irad, and Irad conceived Mahujael, and Mahujael conceived Mathusael, and Mathusael conceived Lamech.
και ελαβεν εαυτω λαμεχ δυο γυναικας ονομα τη μια αδα και ονομα τη δευτερα σελλα19 Lamech took two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.
και ετεκεν αδα τον ιωβελ ουτος ην ο πατηρ οικουντων εν σκηναις κτηνοτροφων20 And Adah conceived Jabel, who was the father of those who live in tents and are shepherds.
και ονομα τω αδελφω αυτου ιουβαλ ουτος ην ο καταδειξας ψαλτηριον και κιθαραν21 And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of those who sing to the harp and the organ.
σελλα δε ετεκεν και αυτη τον θοβελ και ην σφυροκοπος χαλκευς χαλκου και σιδηρου αδελφη δε θοβελ νοεμα22 Zillah also conceived Tubalcain, who was a hammerer and artisan in every work of brass and iron. In fact, the sister of Tubalcain was Noema.
ειπεν δε λαμεχ ταις εαυτου γυναιξιν αδα και σελλα ακουσατε μου της φωνης γυναικες λαμεχ ενωτισασθε μου τους λογους οτι ανδρα απεκτεινα εις τραυμα εμοι και νεανισκον εις μωλωπα εμοι23 And Lamech said to his wives Adah and Zillah: “Listen to my voice, you wives of Lamech, pay attention to my speech. For I have killed a man to my own harm, and an adolescent to my own bruising.
οτι επτακις εκδεδικηται εκ καιν εκ δε λαμεχ εβδομηκοντακις επτα24 Sevenfold vengeance will be given for Cain, but for Lamech, seventy-seven times.”
εγνω δε αδαμ ευαν την γυναικα αυτου και συλλαβουσα ετεκεν υιον και επωνομασεν το ονομα αυτου σηθ λεγουσα εξανεστησεν γαρ μοι ο θεος σπερμα ετερον αντι αβελ ον απεκτεινεν καιν25 Adam also knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Seth, saying, “God has given me another offspring, in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.”
και τω σηθ εγενετο υιος επωνομασεν δε το ονομα αυτου ενως ουτος ηλπισεν επικαλεισθαι το ονομα κυριου του θεου26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos. This one began to invoke the name of the Lord.
