Sirach 22

1 A slothful man is compared to a filthy stone, and every one will hiss him out to his disgrace.	1 In pietra di loto è lapidato il pigro; e tutti favellaranno sopra il disprezzo di colui.
2 A slothful man is compared to the filth of a dunghill: every man that takes it up will shake his hand.	2 Dello sterco de' buoi lapidato è il pigro; e chiunque lo toccherae, si scoterà le mani.
3 An evilnurtured man is the dishonour of his father that begat him: and a [foolish] daughter is born to his loss.	3 La confusione del padre si è il figliuolo pazzo; ma la figlia stolta sarà in isbandimento.
4 A wise daughter shall bring an inheritance to her husband: but she that liveth dishonestly is her father's heaviness.	4 La figlia savia sarà un ereditaggio al marito suo; però che quella che confonde, si fa in contumelia al padre.
5 She that is bold dishonoureth both her father and her husband, but they both shall despise her.	5 Confonde il padre e il marito l'ardita, e dai malvagi non sarà spartita; ma dall' uno e dall' altro sarà vituperata.
6 A tale out of season [is as] musick in mourning: but stripes and correction of wisdom are never out of time.	6 Lo importuno parlare è sì come la musica nel pianto; le battiture e la dottrina sì sono in ogni tempo sapienza.
7 Whoso teacheth a fool is as one that glueth a potsherd together, and as he that waketh one from a sound sleep.	7 Colui che ammaestrarà il pazzo, fa come colui che ricoglie il testo rotto.
8 He that telleth a tale to a fool speaketh to one in a slumber: when he hath told his tale, he will say, What is the matter?	8 Colui che favella a colui che non ode, fa come colui che isveglia del grave sonno colui che dorme.
9 If children live honestly, and have wherewithal, they shall cover the baseness of their parents.	9 Con uno dormitore favella chi parla allo stolto [la sapienza]; il quale in fine della narrazione dirae: chi è costui?
10 But children, being haughty, through disdain and want of nurture do stain the nobility of their kindred.	10 Piagni sopra il morto, però che la luce sua è mancata; e sopra il pazzo piagni, però ch' egli mancoe nel senno.
11 Weep for the dead, for he hath lost the light: and weep for the fool, for he wanteth understanding: make little weeping for the dead, for he is at rest: but the life of the fool is worse than death.	11 Piagni poco sopra il morto, però ch' egli si riposoe.
12 Seven days do men mourn for him that is dead; but for a fool and an ungodly man all the days of his life.	12 La vita del reissimo è più reissima oltre la vita del pazzo.
13 Talk not much with a fool, and go not to him that hath no understanding: beware of him, lest thou have trouble, and thou shalt never be defiled with his fooleries: depart from him, and thou shalt find rest, and never be disquieted with madness.	13 Il pianto del morto sia sette dì; del pazzo e del reo, tutti i dì della vita loro è da piagnere.
14 What is heavier than lead? and what is the name thereof, but a fool?	14 Non parlare molto col pazzo, e col disensato non andare.
15 Sand, and salt, and a mass of iron, is easier to bear, than a man without understanding.	15 Astienti da lui, acciò che tu non abbi gravezza; e non ti sozzerai del peccato di colui.
16 As timber girt and bound together in a building cannot be loosed with shaking: so the heart that is stablished by advised counsel shall fear at no time.	16 Schìfati da lui, e troverai requie, e non cadrai nella sua stoltizia.
17 A heart settled upon a thought of understanding is as a fair plaistering on the wall of a gallery.	17 Quale cosa si graverà sopra il piombo? e che è a colui altro nome, che pazzo?
18 Pales set on an high place will never stand against the wind: so a fearful heart in the imagination of a fool cannot stand against any fear.	18 Più agevole è a portare rena e sale o masse di ferro, che l'uomo sciocco e pazzo e malvagio.
19 He that pricketh the eye will make tears to fall: and he that pricketh the heart maketh it to shew her knowledge.	19 Sì come il tavolato del legno, incatenato al fondamento dello edificio, non si dissolve, così il cuore confermato col pensiero del consiglio.
20 Whoso casteth a stone at the birds frayeth them away: and he that upbraideth his friend breaketh friendship.	20 Il pensiero del savio in nullo tempo incattiverae (nè) per paura.
21 Though thou drewest a sword at thy friend, yet despair not: for there may be a returning [to favour.]	21 Come la paglia negli alti luoghi, e la calcina trita sanza mistione, posta alla faccia del vento, non staranno ferme;
22 If thou hast opened thy mouth against thy friend, fear not; for there may be a reconciliation: except for upbraiding, or pride, or disclosing of secrets, or a treacherous wound: for for these things every friend will depart.	22 così il cuore pauroso nel pensiero dello stolto non resisterae contro allo assalto della paura.
23 Be faithful to thy neighbour in his poverty, that thou mayest rejoice in his prosperity: abide stedfast unto him in the time of his trouble, that thou mayest be heir with him in his heritage: for a mean estate is not always to be contemned: nor the rich that is foolish to be had in admiration.	23 Come (l' ornato arenoso nel pariete polito così) il cuore timoroso nel pensiero del pazzo in ogni tempo non ha paura, così colui che persevera nelli comandamenti di Dio sempre.
24 As the vapour and smoke of a furnace goeth before the fire; so reviling before blood.	24 Colui che si pugne l'occhio, ne fa uscire le lagrime; e colui che si pugne il cuore profera, senno.
25 I will not be ashamed to defend a friend; neither will I hide myself from him.	25 Si come colui che getta la pietra nelli uccelli, caccia quelli; così colui che villaneggia l'amico dissolve l' amistade.
26 And if any evil happen unto me by him, every one that heareth it will beware of him.	26 Verso l'amico se tu traesti fuori il coltello, non ti disperare; però che si puote ritornare allo amico.
27 Who shall set a watch before my mouth, and a seal of wisdom upon my lips, that I fall not suddenly by them, and that my tongue destroy me not?	27 Se elli aprirae la bocca con tristizia, non temere; però che se ne puote rammendare, eccetto la villania e il rimprovero e la superbia e del secreto la revelazione e la piaga fraudolente; in queste cose tutte l'amico fuggirae.
	28 La fede possiedi collo amico nella povertade sua, acciò che ti rallegri nel bene suo.
	29 Nel tempo della sua tribulazione stàlli fedele, acciò che nella sua ereditade tu sia erede con lui.
	30 Il vapore è dinanzi dal fuoco della caminata, e il fumo del fuoco va in alto; così vanno innanzi al sangue li rei detti e le villanie e le minaccie.
	31 Non mi vergogneroe di salutare l'amico, e non mi nasconderoe dalla faccia sua; e se per lui mi verrae male, sì lo sosterroe.
	32 Ciascuno che m' intenderae, si guarderà da quello.
	33 Or chi darà alla bocca mia, guardia, e sopra le labbre mie certo sigillo, sì che io non caggia in quelli, e la lingua mia perisca me?
