Sirach 20

1 There is a reproof that is not comely: again, some man holdeth his tongue, and he is wise.	1 Meglio è morbidamente riprendere, che con ira, e non divietare colui che si confessa nella orazione.
2 It is much better to reprove, than to be angry secretly: and he that confesseth his fault shall be preserved from hurt.	2 La concupiscenza del castrato isverginoe la giovinezza;
3 How good is it, when thou art reproved, to shew repentance! for so shalt thou escape wilful sin.	3 così colui che per forza giudica.
4 As is the lust of an eunuch to deflower a virgin; so is he that executeth judgment with violence.	4 Come è buona cosa, che colui che è corretto il manifesti per penitenza! Fuggirai così il volontario peccato.
5 There is one that keepeth silence, and is found wise: and another by much babbling becometh hateful.	5 Ed è uno che tace, il quale è trovato savio; ed è da odiare colui ch' è disposto al molto favellare.
6 Some man holdeth his tongue, because he hath not to answer: and some keepeth silence, knowing his time.	6 Ed è un altro che tace, però che non ha sentimento della parlatura; ed è tacente colui che sa il tempo acconcio a parlare.
7 A wise man will hold his tongue till he see opportunity: but a babbler and a fool will regard no time.	7 L'uomo savio tacerae infino al tempo; e lo sciocco e il semplice non guarderanno tempo.
8 He that useth many words shall be abhorred; and he that taketh to himself authority therein shall be hated.	8 Colui che usa molte parole, offende l'anima sua; e colui che si toglie signoria ingiustamente, sarà odiato.
9 There is a sinner that hath good success in evil things; and there is a gain that turneth to loss.	9 L'uomo non ammaestrato procede ne' mali, e in lui è trovamento di danno.
10 There is a gift that shall not profit thee; and there is a gift whose recompence is double.	10 Egli è uno dono che non è utile; ed è uno, il cui merito è doppio.
11 There is an abasement because of glory; and there is that lifteth up his head from a low estate.	11 Ed è una remunerazione per avere fama; ed è chi per umilitade leva il capo.
12 There is that buyeth much for a little, and repayeth it sevenfold.	12 Ed è chi molte cose ricompera per piccolo prezzo, ed è chi restituisce in sette doppi.
13 A wise man by his words maketh him beloved: but the graces of fools shall be poured out.	13 Il savio nelle parole fa sè medesimo amabile; ma le grazie de' matti si gittano.
14 The gift of a fool shall do thee no good when thou hast it; neither yet of the envious for his necessity: for he looketh to receive many things for one.	14 Lo dono dello insipido non sarà utile a te; però che gli occhi di colui sono settiplicati.
15 He giveth little, and upbraideth much; he openeth his mouth like a crier; to day he lendeth, and to morrow will he ask it again: such an one is to be hated of God and man.	15 Picciole cose darà, e molte cose rimpropererae; e l'aprimento della bocca sua partorisce molti mali.
16 The fool saith, I have no friends, I have no thank for all my good deeds, and they that eat my bread speak evil of me.	16 Alcuno presta oggi, e domane più domanda; odioso è cotale uomo.
17 How oft, and of how many shall he be laughed to scorn! for he knoweth not aright what it is to have; and it is all one unto him as if he had it not.	17 E non avere per amico il pazzo (non sarà amico); non sarà grazia nelli beni di colui.
18 To slip upon a pavement is better than to slip with the tongue: so the fall of the wicked shall come speedily.	18 Coloro che mangiano il pane dello stolto sono di falsa lingua. Oh quanti e quante volte lo scherniranno!
19 An unseasonable tale will always be in the mouth of the unwise.	19 Nè ancora quello che era da avere, darae con diritto senno; distribuiscene similmente e quello che non era d'avere.
20 A wise sentence shall be rejected when it cometh out of a fool's mouth; for he will not speak it in due season.	20 Il cadere di falsa lingua è sì come il cadere in suso lo smalto; così lo cadimento de' rei verrà tostamente.
21 There is that is hindered from sinning through want: and when he taketh rest, he shall not be troubled.	21 L'uomo sgrazioso è sì come favola; nella bocca delli non ammaestrati sarae continua.
22 There is that destroyeth his own soul through bashfulness, and by accepting of persons overthroweth himself.	22 Il proverbio ch' esce della bocca del pazzo, sarà biasimato; però che non lo dice nello suo tempo.
23 There is that for bashfulness promiseth to his friend, and maketh him his enemy for nothing.	23 Elli è alcuno che non puote peccare per povertade; e nel suo riposo fia stimolato.
24 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is continually in the mouth of the untaught.	24 Ed è chi perde l'anima per timidezza, e chi per isciocchezza perde quella; per autorità d' alcuna persona perde sè.
25 A thief is better than a man that is accustomed to lie: but they both shall have destruction to heritage.	25 Ed è alcuno che per vergogna promette all'amico; e sì se l'ha guadagnato per nimico.
26 The disposition of a liar is dishonourable, and his shame is ever with him.	26 Sozzo vituperio è nella bocca dell' uomo la bugia; e quella fia spesso nella bocca de' non savi.
27 A wise man shall promote himself to honour with his words: and he that hath understanding will please great men.	27 Migliore è il ladro, che la continuanza dell' uomo bugiardo; e l'uno e l'altro erediteranno perdizione.
28 He that tilleth his land shall increase his heap: and he that pleaseth great men shall get pardon for iniquity.	28 Li costumi delli uomini sono bugie sanza onore; e la confusione di coloro sì è con loro sanza intervallo.
29 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise, and stop up his mouth that he cannot reprove.	29 Il savio nelle parole farà grande sè medesimo, e l'uomo prudente adumilierà li potenti.
30 Wisdom that is hid, and treasure that is hoarded up, what profit is in them both?	30 Chi lavora la terra sua inalza il monte delle biade, e chi opera giustizia sarà esaltato; colui che piace alli gloriosi, schiferà iniquità.
31 Better is he that hideth his folly than a man that hideth his wisdom.	31 Li presenti e li doni accecano li occhi dei giudici, e sì come al muto nella bocca loro isvolgeranno li castigamenti di coloro.
32 Necessary patience in seeking ing the Lord is better than he that leadeth his life without a guide.	32 Sapienza ascosa e tesoro non veduto, che utilità è nell' uno e nell' altro?
	33 Migliore è colui che cela la sciocchezza sua, che l'uomo che nasconde la sapienza sua.
