1 This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he ha terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.	1 E il predetto Simone, manifestatore della pecunia e della patria, diceva molto male di Onia, come se lui avesse istigato Eliodoro a dire queste cose, e anco lui fosse inventor di questi mali.
2 Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws.	2 Ed era auso di dire quello il quale era provisore della sua città, e difensore della sua gente, e zelatore della legge e di Dio, esser insidiatore del regno.
3 But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon's faction murders were committed,	3 Ed essendo molto cresciute le inimicizie, intanto che per alcuni amici di Simone si facesse molti omicidii;
4 Onias seeing the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, as being the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, did rage, and increase Simon's malice,	4 considerando Onia il pericolo della contenzione, e Appollonio impazzire, cioè il duca di Celesiria e di Fenicia, da esser cresciuta la malizia di Simone, se n' andò al re,
5 He went to the king, not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but seeking the good of all, both publick and private:	5 non come accusatore de' cittadini, ma considerando la comune utilitade, appresso sè stesso, di tutta la moltitudine.
6 For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto.	6 Però ch' egli vedea ch' era impossibile (di provvedere) sanza la providenza regale (e) dar pace alle cose, nè Simone poter cessare dalla pazzia sua.
7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest,	7 Ma dopo lo eccesso della vita di Seleuco, avendo ricevuto il regno Antioco, il qual si appellava Nobile, desiderava Iasone, fratello di Onia, il sommo sacerdozio
8 Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents:	8 dal detto re, promettendogli trecento sessanta talenti d'ariento, e delle altre rendite ottanta talenti.
9 Beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians.	9 E oltre di questo li promettea altri centocinquanta, se li fosse concessa la podestà sopra il luogo dove si ammaestrava la gente nella sua legge e sopra il postribulo de' giovani, e di scrivere quelli Antiocheni li quali sono in Ierusalem.
10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to Greekish fashion.	10 E avendo il re consentito, e ottenuto il principato, subito comandò che quelli della tribù sua si transferisse al rito de' gentili.
11 And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law:	11 E ammote quelle cose le quali erano state ordinate dalli re ai Giudei per umanità, per lo mezzo di Giovanni padre di Eufolemo, lo qual fu ambasciatore alli Romani per concluder (unione e) l'amicizia e la compagnia loro, disfacendo le leggi legittime dei cittadini, ordinava prave leggi.
12 For he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat.	12 Ed ebbe tanto ardire, ch' egli ordinò uno luogo sotto alla torre, e tutti gli ottimi degli belli giovani poner nel postribulo.
13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;	13 E questo non era principio, ma era uno augumento e uno profetto di una istrana conversazione de' gentili, per cagione della scelerità iscomunicata e inaudita di Iasone, empio, non sacerdote;
14 That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth;	14 per tal modo che sacerdoti già non erano solleciti circa l'ufficio dell' altare, ma disprezzato il tempio, e non si curando delli sacrificii, sollecitavano di esser partecipi (del combatter) della palestra, e della sua dazion ingiusta, e nelli esercizii delli giuochi da gittar le pietre in alto.
15 Not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all.	15 Non avendo alcuna cosa delli onori della patria, pensavano le glorie greche esser ottime.
16 By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things.	16 Per la qual cosa era tra loro una pericolosa contenzione, e seguitavano li loro instituti, e in tutto cercavano esser simili a coloro, i quali aveano avuto per nemici e distruttori.
17 For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God: but the time following shall declare these things.	17 Però che empiamente operare contro le leggi divine non passa sanza pena; ma questo il seguente tempo il dichiarerà.
18 Now when the game that was used every faith year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present,	18 Conciosia cosa che ogni capo de' cinque anni. si facesse in Tiro uno giuoco ovver una contenzione, e il re fosse presente;
19 This ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges.	19 mandò Iasone, operatore di molti mali, di Ierusalem uomini peccatori (e malvagi), i quali portavano trecento dramme d'ariento alli sacrificii di Ercole, le quali dimandarono quelli che le portarono, acciò ch' elle non fussero date alli sacrificii, però che non bisognasse, ma esser deputate in altre spese.
20 This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules' sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof, it was employed to the making of gallies.	20 Ma queste furono offerte da colui che le mandava, nel sacrificio di Ercole; e per cagione di quelli ch' erano presenti furono date in fabbrica di navi, le quali hanno tre ordini di remi.
21 Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppa, and from thence to Jerusalem:	21 E mandato in Egitto Apollonio, figliuolo di Mnesteo, per cagione delli principi di Tolomeo, amator della madre del re, avendo conosciuto Antioco esser fatto alieno dalle facende del regno, prendendo consiglio dalle proprie utilità, partito di quel luogo venne in Ioppen, e da Ioppen se ne venne in Ierusalem.
22 Where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch alight, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice.	22 E ricevuto magnificamente da Iasone e dalla cittade, entrò con molte flaccole accese e con molta laude; e di là rivolse lo esercito suo (e mandollo) in Fenicia.
23 Three years afterward Jason sent Menelans, the aforesaid Simon's brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters.	23 E dopo tre anni mandò Iasone Menelao, fratello del sopradetto Simone, il qual portava le pecunie del re, e avea in commissione di portar risposta delle faccende necessarie.
24 But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.	24 E Menelao, avendosi raccomandato al re, dopo ch' egli ebbe magnificato la faccia della maiestate sua, rivolsesi (e accettò) il sommo sacerdozio in sè stesso, sopraponendo (e promettendoli) al tributo gli dava Iasone, talenti CCC di ariento.
25 So he came with the king's mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.	25 E avuta la risposta dal re per comandamento, se ne venne, non avendo alcuna cosa degna. di sacerdozio, ma era di animo di crudele tiranno, e avea cuore di crudele bestia selvaggia.
26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites.	26 E Iasone, il quale avea cattivato il proprio fratello, essendo ingannato, fu iscacciato nella regione degli Ammaniti in esilio.
27 So Menelans got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratis the ruler of the castle required it:	27 E Menelao certamente ottenne il principato; ma delle pecunie promesse al re non facea alcuna cosa, essendo esattore Sostrato, il quale era capitano della ròcca.
28 For unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king.	28 Però che a costui si appartenea di scuotere li tributi; per qual cagione ciascuno di loro furono chiamati al re.
29 Now Menelans left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood; and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians.	29 E Menelao fue rimosso dal sacerdozio, succedendogli Lisimaco suo fratello; e Sostrato fu mandato presidente in Cipro.
30 While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king's concubine, called Antiochus.	30 E trattandosi queste cagioni, addivenne che quelli di Tarso e quelli di Mallo moverono sedizione, per ch' erano dati in dono alla concubina dello re Antioco.
31 Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy.	31 E subitamente venne il re a quietare loro, rimanendo sostituto Andronico, uno delli suoi prìncipi.
32 Now Menelans, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about.	32 E (dopo questo) pensò Menelao, e prese a sè il tempo comodo, e rubò alcuni vasi di oro del tempio, degli quali alcuni donò ad Andronico, e il resto vendette in Tiro e per le città vicine.
33 Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia.	33 La qual cosa avendola certissimamente intesa Onia, lo riprendeva, essendosi lui ridotto in Antiochia, in luogo sicuro senza danno.
34 Wherefore Menelans, taking Andronicus apart, prayed, him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard of justice.	34 Onde Menelao se ne andò ad Andronico, e pregavalo ch' egli uccidesse Onia. Il quale essendo venuto a Onia, e avendogli data la fede con giuramento, avvenga che gli fosse sospetto, gli persuase ch' egli uscisse del tempio; il qual uscito, sùbito l'uccise, non avendo rispetto alla giustizia.
35 For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man.	35 Per la qual cagione non solamente i giudei, ma anco l'altre nazioni s'erano indignate, e con grande molestia sosteneano la ingiusta morte di uno tanto uomo.
36 And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause.	36 Ed essendo ritornato il re de' luoghi di Cilicia, andarono i Giudei in Antiochia, e anco con esso loro i Greci, lamentandosi della iniqua morte di Onia.
37 Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead.	37 La qual cosa udita, Antioco attristossi nell'animo per cagione di Onia; e provocato a misericordia pianse, riduttosi a memoria la integrità e modestia del morto.
38 And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved.	38 E acceso nell' animo, comandò che fusse preso Andronico, e spogliatogli la vestimenta di rosato, fusse menato per tutta la città, e in quel medesimo luogo, nel quale egli avea commesso contro Onia tal empietade, fusse privato della vita, come uomo sacrilego, dandogli il Signore la pena a lui condegna.
39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelans, and the fruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away.	39 E avendo commessi Lisimaco molti sacrilegii per consiglio di Menelao, essendo già divulgata la loro mala fama, congregossi la moltitudine contro a Lisimaco, avendo lui già tolto molto oro.
40 Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly.	40 E levandosi le turbe, avendo li loro animi pieni d'ira, Lisimaco insieme quasi con tremilia uomini armati cominciò a ferire le turbe, essendogli duca uno tiranno provetto di etate e di pazzia
41 They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them.	41 Ma intendendo le turbe la violenza d'esso Lisimaco e il suo sforzo, alcuni pigliorono le pietre; alcuni, bastoni forti; e alcuni gettavano la cenere contra di Lisimaco.
42 Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury.	42 Onde che essendo alcuni feriti, alcuni suffocati, tutti si voltorono in fuga; intanto che anco esso Lisimaco sacrilego ucciderono appo lo erario.
43 Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelans.	43 Di queste cose adunque si cominciò anco litigare in giudizio contro Menelao.
44 Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him:	44 Ed essendo venuto il re alla città di Tiro, tre uomini gli quali erano de' più antichi furono mandati a deponere questa cagione dinanzi a lui.
45 But Menelans, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him.	45 Ed essendo superato Menelao (in giudicio), promèsse a Tolomeo di darli molta pecunia, acciò ch' egli persuadesse al re in favore suo.
46 Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind:	46 Essendo veramente Tolomeo in una sala per pigliare alquanto di refrigerio, (partissi e) andossene al re, e revocò il re dalla sentenza.
47 Insomuch that he discharged Menelans from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death.	47 E (con sue persuasioni) fece liberare Menelao, pieno d'ogni malizia, dagli mali ch' egli avea commessi; e quegli miseri, i quali se anco appresso i Sciti avessono dedutta questa causa. sarebbono stati giustificati, furono condannati a morte.
48 Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.	48 Subito adunque a coloro, i quali aveano agitata la cagione per il popolo e i vasi sacri, gli fu data la ingiusta pena.
49 Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried.	49 Per la qual cosa, essendo quegli di Tiro indignati, dimonstrorono grande liberalità alla loro sepultura.
50 And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelans remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens.	50 Ma Menelao per cagione della avarizia di coloro i quali reggevano, rimase in (autorità e) podestà, crescendo in malizia e in insidie de' cittadini.
