1 Amikor Roboám Jeruzsálembe érkezett, egybehívta Júda és Benjamin egész házát, száznyolcvanezer válogatott harcost, hogy harcra keljen Izraellel és visszatérítse magához országát.	1 When Rehoboam reached Jerusalem, he mustered a hundred and eighty thousand picked warriors ofthe House of Judah and Benjamin to fight Israel and win back the kingdom for Rehoboam.
2 Ám az Úr szózatot intézett Semejához, az Isten emberéhez, ezekkel a szavakkal:	2 But the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, man of God,
3 »Szólj Roboámhoz, Salamon fiához, Júda királyához s egész Izraelhez, amely Júdában és Benjaminban van:	3 'Say this to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to al Israel in Judah and Benjamin,
4 Ezt üzeni az Úr: Ne vonuljatok fel és ne szálljatok harcba testvéreitekkel! Térjen vissza mindenki a házába, mert az én akaratom alapján történt ez a dolog.« Amikor ezek meghallották az Úr üzenetét, visszatértek s nem vonultak fel Jeroboám ellen.	4 "Yahweh says this: Do not go and make war on your brothers; let everyone go home, for this is mydoing." ' They obeyed Yahweh's command and went back instead of marching against Jeroboam.
5 Roboám Jeruzsálemben lakott, és fallal megerősített városokat építtetett Júdában.	5 Rehoboam, residing in Jerusalem, fortified a number of towns for the defence of Judah.
6 Kiépíttette Betlehemet, Etámot, Tekoát,	6 He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,
7 Bétszúrt, Szókót, Adullámot,	7 Beth-Zur, Soco, Adul am,
8 valamint Gátot, Máresát, Zífet,	8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
9 továbbá Adurámot, Lákist, Azekát,	9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,
10 Száraát, Ajjalont, Hebront erős városokká; mindezek Júdában és Benjaminban voltak.	10 Zorah, Aijalon, Hebron, these being the fortified towns in Judah and Benjamin.
11 Miután fallal körülvétette őket, parancsnokokat és élelmiszer-, azaz olaj- és borraktárakat helyezett beléjük,	11 He equipped these fortresses, stationing commanders in them, with supplies of food, oil and wine,
12 és mindegyik városban pajzsoknak és dárdáknak való fegyvertárakat készíttetett és nagy gondossággal megerősíttette őket. Így uralkodott Júdán és Benjaminon.	12 and shields and spears in each of these towns, making them extremely strong and thus retainingcontrol of Judah and Benjamin.
13 A papok és a leviták, bárhol voltak egész Izraelben, eljöttek hozzá valamennyi lakóhelyükről,	13 The priests and the Levites from all over Israel left their districts to put themselves at his disposal.
14 és elhagyták legelőiket és birtokaikat s átköltöztek Júdába és Jeruzsálembe, mert Jeroboám és utódai eltávolították őket, hogy ne gyakorolják az Úr papságát.	14 The Levites, indeed, abandoned their pasture lands and their holdings and came to Judah andJerusalem because Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from the priesthood of Yahweh.
15 Ő ugyanis más papokat rendelt a magaslatokhoz, a démonokhoz és az általa készített borjúkhoz.	15 Jeroboam had appointed his own priests for the high places dedicated to the satyrs and calves whichhe had made.
16 Különben Izrael valamennyi törzséből is mindazok, akik szívükben elhatározták, hogy az Urat, Izrael Istenét keresik, Jeruzsálembe jöttek, hogy vágó áldozataikat az Úr, az ő atyáik Istene előtt mutassák be.	16 And those members of al the tribes of Israel who were determined to seek Yahweh, God of Israel,fol owed those priests and Levites to Jerusalem to sacrifice to Yahweh, God of their ancestors.
17 Így erősítették Júda királyságát s erősítették Roboámot, Salamon fiát, három esztendőn át; csak három esztendeig jártak ugyanis Dávid és Salamon útjain.	17 These added strength to the kingdom of Judah and gave their support to Rehoboam son of Solomonfor three years. For three years they remained loyal to David and Solomon.
18 Roboám feleségül vette Mahálátot, Jerimótnak, Dávid fiának leányát, meg Abihailt, Eliábnak, Izáj fiának leányát.	18 Rehoboam married Mahalath daughter of Jerimoth, son of David, and of Abihail daughter of Eliabson of Jesse,
19 Ez neki fiúkat szült: Jehust, Somorját és Zóomot.	19 and she bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah and Zaham.
20 Utána elvette Maákát, Absalom leányát; ez neki Ábiát, Ittajt, Zízát és Selomitot szülte.	20 After her, he married Maacah daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza and Shelomith.
21 Roboám Maákát, Absalom leányát jobban szerette valamennyi feleségénél és mellékfeleségénél: tizennyolc feleséget és hatvan mellékfeleséget vett ugyanis el s huszonnyolc fiút és hatvan leányt nemzett.	21 Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absalom, more than all his other wives and concubines. Hehad in fact a total of eighteen wives and sixty concubines and fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
22 Ábiát, Maáka fiát rendelte valamennyi testvére fejévé, mert őt akarta királlyá tenni,	22 Rehoboam named Abijah son of Maacah as head, hence leader, of his brothers, with a view tomaking him king,
23 mivel bölcsebb és hatalmasabb volt valamennyi fiánál. A többieket szétosztotta Júda és Benjamin egész területére s valamennyi megerősített városba, és bőségesen ellátta élelemmel és sok asszonyt szerzett nekik.	23 and acted wisely by distributing his sons throughout the territories of Judah and Benjamin, some ineach fortified town, where he provided plenty of food for them and found them wives.
