1 Or Judas entendit parler des Romains. Ils étaient, disait-on, puissants, bienveillants aussienvers tous ceux qui s'attachaient à leur cause, accordant leur amitié à quiconque s'adressait à eux.	1 Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans. They were valiant fighters and acted amiably to all who took their side. They established a friendly alliance with all who applied to them.
2 (Leur puissance en effet était fort grande.) On lui raconta leurs guerres et les exploits qu'ilsavaient accomplis chez les Gaulois, comment ils s'étaient rendus maîtres de ce peuple et l'avaient soumis autribut,	2 He was also told of their battles and the brave deeds that they had performed against the Gauls, conquering them and forcing them to pay tribute.
3 tout ce qu'ils avaient fait dans le pays d'Espagne pour s'emparer des mines d'argent et d'or quis'y trouvaient,	3 They had gotten possession of the silver and gold mines in Spain,
4 comment ils avaient eu raison de tout ce pays grâce à leur esprit averti et à leur persévérance(car l'endroit était fort éloigné de chez eux); il en avait été de même des rois venus pour les attaquer desextrémités de la terre, ils les avaient écrasés, leur infligeant un grand désastre, tandis que les autres leurapportaient un tribut annuel;	4 and by planning and persistence had conquered the whole country, although it was very remote from their own. They had crushed the kings who had come against them from the far corners of the earth and had inflicted on them severe defeat, and the rest paid tribute to them every year.
5 enfin ils avaient abattu par les armes Philippe, Persée, roi des Kitiens, et les autres quis'étaient levés contre eux, et ils les avaient soumis.	5 Philip and Perseus, king of the Macedonians, and the others who opposed them in battle had been overwhelmed and subjugated.
6 Antiochus le Grand, roi de l'Asie, qui s'était avancé pour les combattre avec 120 éléphants, dela cavalerie, des chars et une armée considérable, avait été entièrement défait par eux	6 Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had fought against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very great army, had been defeated by them.
7 et capturé vivant. A lui et à ses successeurs sur le trône étaient imposés, à termes fixés, lepaiement d'un lourd tribut et la livraison d'otages.	7 They had taken him alive and obliged him and the kings who succeeded him to pay a heavy tribute, to give hostages and a section of
8 On lui enlevait le pays indien, la Médie, la Lydie et quelques-unes de ses plus bellesprovinces au profit du roi Eumène.	8 Lycia, Mysia, and Lydia from among their best provinces. The Romans took these from him and gave them to King Eumenes.

10 les Romains, l'ayant su, avaient envoyé contre eux un seul général; ils leur firent une guerreoù tombèrent un grand nombre de victimes, ils emmenèrent en captivité femmes et enfants, ils pillèrent leursbiens, assujettirent leurs pays, détruisirent leurs forteresses et réduisirent leurs personnes en servitude commeelles le sont encore aujourd'hui.	10 the Romans discovered it, and sent against the Greeks a single general who made war on them. Many were wounded and fell, and the Romans took their wives and children captive. They plundered them, took possession of their land, tore down their strongholds and reduced them to slavery even to this day.
11 Quant aux autres royaumes et aux îles qui leur avaient résisté, les Romains les avaientdétruits et asservis.	11 All the other kingdoms and islands that had ever opposed them they destroyed and enslaved;
12 Mais à leurs amis et à ceux qui se reposent sur eux, ils ont gardé leur amitié. Ils ont assujettiles rois voisins et les rois éloignés, tous ceux qui entendent leur nom les redoutent.	12 with their friends, however, and those who relied on them, they maintained friendship. They had conquered kings both far and near, and all who heard of their fame were afraid of them.
13 Tous ceux à qui ils veulent prêter secours et conférer la royauté, règnent; ils déposent aucontraire qui il leur plaît: ils ont atteint une puissance considérable.	13 In truth, those whom they desired to help to a kingdom became kings, and those whom they wished to depose they deposed; and they were greatly exalted.
14 Malgré tout cela aucun d'entre eux n'a ceint le diadème ni revêtu la pourpre pour en tirergloire.	14 Yet with all this, none of them put on a crown or wore purple as a display of grandeur.
15 Ils se sont créé un conseil où chaque jour délibèrent 320 membres continuellement occupésdu peuple pour le maintenir en bon ordre.	15 They had made for themselves a senate house, and every day three hundred and twenty men took counsel, deliberating on all that concerned the people and their well-being.
16 Ils confient chaque année à un seul homme le pouvoir et la domination sur tout leur empire:tous obéissent à ce seul homme sans qu'il y ait d'envie ou de jalousie parmi eux.	16 They entrusted their government to one man every year, to rule over their entire country, and they all obeyed that one, and there was no envy or jealousy among them.
17 Ayant choisi Eupolème, fils de Jean, de la maison d'Akkôs, et Jason, fils d'Eléazar, Judas lesenvoya à Rome conclure avec les Romains amitié et alliance,	17 So Judas chose Eupolemus, son of John, son of Accos, and Jason, son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish an alliance of friendship with them.
18 et obtenir d'être délivrés du joug, car ils voyaient que la royauté des Grecs réduisait Israël enservitude.	18 He did this to get rid of the yoke, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the Greeks was subjecting Israel to slavery.
19 Ils arrivèrent à Rome au bout d'un très long voyage et, entrés au Sénat, ils prirent la paroleen ces termes:	19 After making a very long journey to Rome, the envoys entered the senate and spoke as follows:
20 "Judas, dit Maccabée, et ses frères avec le peuple juif nous ont envoyés vers vous pourconclure avec vous un traité d'alliance et de paix et pour être inscrits au nombre de vos alliés et de vos amis."	20 "Judas, called Maccabeus, and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to make a peaceful alliance with you, and to enroll ourselves among your allies and friends."
21 La requête plut aux sénateurs.	21 The proposal pleased the Romans,
22 Voici la copie de la lettre qu'ils gravèrent sur des tables de bronze et envoyèrent à Jérusalempour y être chez les Juifs un document de paix et d'alliance:	22 and this is a copy of the reply they inscribed on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem, to remain there with the Jews as a record of peace and alliance:
23 "Prospérité aux Romains et à la nation des Juifs sur mer et sur terre à jamais! Loin d'eux leglaive et l'ennemi!	23 "May it be well with the Romans and the Jewish nation at sea and on land forever; may sword and enemy be far from them.
24 S'il arrive une guerre, à Rome d'abord, ou à quelqu'un de ses alliés sur toute l'étendue de sadomination,	24 But if war is first made on Rome, or any of its allies in any of their dominions,
25 la nation des Juifs combattra avec elle, suivant ce que lui dicteront les circonstances, de toutcoeur;	25 the Jewish nation will help them wholeheartedly, as the occasion shall demand;
26 ils ne donneront aux adversaires et ne leur fourniront ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, nivaisseaux: ainsi en a décidé Rome, et ils garderont leurs engagements sans recevoir de garantie.	26 and to those who wage war they shall not give nor provide grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without receiving any recompense.
27 De même, s'il arrive d'abord une guerre à la nation des Juifs, les Romains combattront avecelle de toute leur âme, suivant ce que leur dicteront les circonstances.	27 In the same way, if war is made first on the Jewish nation, the Romans will help them willingly, as the occasion shall demand,
28 Il ne sera donné aux assaillants ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux: ainsi en a décidéRome, et ils garderont leurs engagements sans dol.	28 and to those who are attacking them there shall not be given grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without deception.
29 C'est en ces termes que les Romains ont conclu leur convention avec le peuple des Juifs.	29 On these terms the Romans have made an agreement with the Jewish people.
30 Que si, dans la suite, les uns et les autres décident d'y ajouter ou en retrancher quelquechose, ils le feront à leur gré et ce qu'ils auront ajouté ou retranché sera obligatoire.	30 But if both parties hereafter decide to add or take away anything, they shall do as they choose, and whatever they shall add or take away shall be valid.
31 Au sujet des maux que le roi Démétrius leur a causés, nous lui avons écrit en ces termes:Pourquoi fais-tu peser ton joug sur les Juifs, nos amis alliés?	31 "Moreover, concerning the wrongs that King Demetrius has done to them, we have written to him thus: 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?
32 Si donc ils t'accusent encore, nous soutiendrons leurs droits et nous te combattrons sur meret sur terre."	32 If they complain about you again, we will do them justice and make war on you by land and sea.'"
