1 Im achtzehnten Jahr Joschafats, des Königs von Juda, wurde Joram, der Sohn Ahabs, in Samaria König von Israel. Er regierte zwölf Jahre	1 Jehoram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king ofJudah, and reigned for twelve years.
2 und tat, was dem Herrn missfiel. Doch trieb er es nicht so schlimm wie sein Vater und seine Mutter; denn er entfernte das Steinmal des Baal, das sein Vater errichtet hatte.	2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, though not like his father and mother, for he did away with thepil ar to Baal which his father had made.
3 Nur an der Sünde, zu der Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, Israel verführt hatte, hielt er fest und ließ nicht von ihr ab.	3 Nonetheless, he continued to practise the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel and didnot give them up.
4 Mescha, der König von Moab, betrieb Schafzucht und musste dem König von Israel hunderttausend Lämmer und die Wolle von hunderttausend Widdern liefern.	4 Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-breeder and used to pay the king of Israel in tribute a hundredthousand lambs and a hundred thousand rams with their wool.
5 Nach dem Tod Ahabs aber fiel der König von Moab vom König von Israel ab.	5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebel ed against the king of Israel.
6 König Joram rückte daher zu dieser Zeit von Samaria aus und musterte ganz Israel.	6 At once King Jehoram left Samaria and mustered al Israel.
7 Auch ließ er Joschafat, dem König von Juda, sagen: Der König von Moab ist von mir abgefallen. Willst du mit mir gegen Moab in den Krieg ziehen? Joschafat antwortete: Ich ziehe mit dir, mein Volk mit deinem Volk, meine Pferde mit deinen Pferden.	7 After this he sent word to the king of Judah, 'The king of Moab has rebel ed against me. Wil you go towar with me against Moab?' 'I wil ,' he replied. 'I wil be as you, my men as yours, my horses as yours,'
8 Dann fragte Joram: Auf welchem Weg sollen wir hinaufziehen? Joschafat entschied: Durch die Wüste von Edom.	8 and added, 'Which way are we to attack?' 'Through the desert of Edom,' the other answered.
9 Der König von Israel, der König von Juda und der König von Edom rückten nun aus. Als sie bereits einen Weg von sieben Tagen zurückgelegt hatten, fehlte es dem Heer und dem Vieh, das sie mitführten, an Wasser.	9 So they set out, the king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom. They carried out a flankingmovement for seven days, until there was no water left for the troops or for the beasts of their baggage train.
10 Der König von Israel sagte: Weh uns, der Herr hat diese drei Könige hierher gerufen, um sie in die Gewalt der Moabiter zu geben.	10 'Alas!' the king of Israel exclaimed, 'Yahweh has summoned us three kings, only to put us into thepower of Moab.'
11 Joschafat aber fragte: Ist hier kein Prophet des Herrn, durch den wir den Herrn befragen könnten? Einer von den Dienern des Königs von Israel antwortete: Hier ist Elischa, der Sohn Schafats, der Elija Wasser über die Hände gegossen hat.	11 But the king of Judah said, 'Is there no prophet of Yahweh here for us to consult Yahweh through him?'One of the king of Israel's servants answered, 'Elisha son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on thehands of Elijah.'
12 Joschafat sagte: Bei ihm ist das Wort des Herrn. Da ging der König von Israel mit Joschafat und dem König von Edom zu ihm hinab.	12 'The word of Yahweh is with him,' the king of Judah said. So the king of Israel, the king of Judah andthe king of Edom went to consult him.
13 Doch Elischa sagte zum König von Israel: Was habe ich mit dir zu schaffen? Geh zu den Propheten deines Vaters und zu den Propheten deiner Mutter! Der König von Israel entgegnete: Darum geht es jetzt nicht. Der Herr hat diese drei Könige hierher gerufen, um sie in die Gewalt der Moabiter zu geben.	13 But Elisha said to the king of Israel, 'What business have you with me? Go to your father's and yourmother's prophets.' 'No,' the king of Israel answered, 'Yahweh is the one who has summoned us three kings,only to put us into the power of Moab.' Elisha replied,
14 Elischa antwortete: So wahr der Herr der Heere lebt, in dessen Dienst ich stehe: Wenn ich nicht auf Joschafat, den König von Juda, Rücksicht nähme, dich würde ich nicht beachten und keines Blickes würdigen.	14 'By the life of Yahweh Sabaoth whom I serve, if I did not respect the king of Judah, I would take nonotice of you, nor so much as look at you.
15 Aber nun holt mir einen Harfenspieler! Als der Spieler über die Saiten fuhr, kam die Hand des Herrn über Elischa	15 Now bring me someone who can play the lyre.' And as the musician played, the hand of Yahweh cameon him
16 und er rief: So spricht der Herr: Macht in diesem Tal Grube neben Grube!	16 and he said, 'Yahweh says this, "Dig in this val ey ditch after ditch,"
17 Denn so spricht der Herr: Ihr werdet weder Wind noch Regen sehen. Doch dieses Tal wird sich mit Wasser füllen und ihr werdet trinken, wie auch eure Herden und euer Vieh.	17 for Yahweh says, "You wil see no wind, you will see no rain, but this val ey wil become ful of water,and you and your troops and your baggage animals will drink."
18 Aber das ist dem Herrn noch zu wenig. Er wird die Moabiter in eure Gewalt geben.	18 But this is only a trifle in Yahweh's eyes, for he wil put Moab itself into your power.
19 Ihr werdet alle Festungen und ihre besten Städte erobern, alle wertvollen Bäume fällen, alle Wasserquellen zuschütten und alle guten Äcker mit Steinen verderben.	19 You wil storm every fortified town, fell every productive tree, block every water-hole, ruin al the bestfields with stones.'
20 Und wirklich, am nächsten Morgen, zur Zeit, da man das Speiseopfer darzubringen pflegt, kam Wasser von Edom her und die ganze Gegend wurde vom Wasser überflutet.	20 Next morning at the time when the oblation was being offered, water came from the direction of Edom,and the whole terrain was flooded.
21 Als ganz Moab erfuhr, dass die Könige zum Krieg gegen das Land anrückten, wurden alle aufgeboten, die Waffen tragen konnten; sie stellten sich an der Grenze auf.	21 When the Moabites learned that the kings were advancing to fight them, al those of an age to beararms were mobilised; they took up position on the frontier.
22 Frühmorgens aber, als die Sonne über dem Wasser aufging, erschien ihnen das Wasser drüben rot wie Blut.	22 In the morning when they got up, the sun was shining on the water; and in the distance the Moabitessaw the water as red as blood.
23 Sie sagten: Das ist Blut. Die Könige haben sich selbst umgebracht; einer hat den andern erschlagen. Auf jetzt, zur Beute, ihr Moabiter!	23 'This is blood!' they said. 'The kings must have fought among themselves and killed one another. Sonow for the booty, Moab!'
24 Doch als sie sich dem Lager der Israeliten näherten, erhoben sich diese und schlugen die Moabiter in die Flucht. Unaufhörlich drängten die Israeliten nach und machten sie nieder.	24 But when they reached the Israelite camp, the Israelites launched their attack and the Moabites fledbefore them, and as they advanced they cut the Moabites to pieces.
25 Sie zerstörten die Städte und auf alle guten Äcker warf jeder seinen Stein, bis sie ganz bedeckt waren. Auch schütteten sie alle Wasserquellen zu und fällten alle wertvollen Bäume. Zuletzt blieb nur noch Kir-Heres übrig; diese Stadt umstellten und beschossen die Schleuderer.	25 They laid the towns in ruins, and each man threw a stone into al the best fields to fil them up, and theyblocked every water-hole and felled every productive tree. In the end, there was only Kir-Hareseth left, which theslingers surrounded and bombarded.
26 Als der König von Moab sah, dass er dem Angriff nicht mehr standhalten konnte, sammelte er siebenhundert mit dem Schwert bewaffnete Männer um sich und versuchte beim König von Edom durchzubrechen. Doch es gelang ihnen nicht.	26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had turned against him, he mustered seven hundredswordsmen in the hope of breaking a way out and going to the king of Aram, but he failed.
27 Nun nahm er seinen erstgeborenen Sohn, der nach ihm König werden sollte, und brachte ihn auf der Mauer als Brandopfer dar. Da kam ein gewaltiger Zorn über Israel. Sie zogen von Moab ab und kehrten in ihr Land zurück.	27 Then he took his eldest son who was to succeed him and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wal .Alarmed at this, the Israelites withdrew and retired to their own territory.
