DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.1 After he had said al this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron valley where there was agarden into which he went with his disciples.
And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples.2 Judas the traitor knew the place also, since Jesus had often met his disciples there,
Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.3 so Judas brought the cohort to this place together with guards sent by the chief priests and thePharisees, al with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye?4 Knowing everything that was to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said, 'Who are you lookingfor?'
They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.5 They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said, 'I am he.' Now Judas the traitor was standing amongthem.
As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground.6 When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they moved back and fell on the ground.
Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.7 He asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene.'
Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way.8 Jesus replied, 'I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.'
That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one.9 This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost.'
Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus.10 Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.The servant's name was Malchus.
Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?11 Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?'
Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him:12 The cohort and its tribune and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.
And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year.13 They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priestthat year.
Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.14 It was Caiaphas who had counsel ed the Jews, 'It is better for one man to die for the people.'
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.15 Simon Peter, with another disciple, fol owed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest, went with Jesus into the high priest's palace,
But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter.16 but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the door-keeper and brought Peter in.
The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith: I am not.17 The girl on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' He answered, 'Iam not.'
Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself.18 Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.
The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.19 The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing.20 Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for al the world to hear; I have always taught in thesynagogue and in the Temple where al the Jews meet together; I have said nothing in secret.
Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said.21 Why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught; they know what I said.'
And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so?22 At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying, 'Is that the wayyou answer the high priest?'
Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me?23 Jesus replied, 'If there is some offence in what I said, point it out; but if not, why do you strike me?'
And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest.24 Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not.25 As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of hisdisciples?' He denied it saying, 'I am not.'
One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him?26 One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I seeyou in the garden with him?'
Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew.27 Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crowed.
Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch.28 They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did notgo into the Praetorium themselves to avoid becoming defiled and unable to eat the Passover.
Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man?29 So Pilate came outside to them and said, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' They replied,
They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.30 'If he were not a criminal, we should not have handed him over to you.'
Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;31 Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.' The Jews answered, 'We are notal owed to put anyone to death.'
That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die.32 This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.
Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews?33 So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and cal ed Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king ofthe Jews?'
Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me?34 Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'
Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?35 Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you overto me: what have you done?'
Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.36 Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men wouldhave fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'
Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice.37 Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was bornfor this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and al who are on the side of truth listen to myvoice.'
Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him.38 'Truth?' said Pilate. 'What is that?' And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find nocase against him.
But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews?39 But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me,then, to release for you the king of the Jews?'
Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.40 At this they shouted, 'Not this man,' they said, 'but Barabbas.' Barabbas was a bandit.
