Let there be a trumpet in thy throat like an eagle upon the house of the Lord: because they have transgressed my covenant, and have violated my law. | 1 A trumpet to your lips, You who watch over the house of the LORD! Since they have violated my covenant, and sinned against my law, |
They shall call upon me: O my God, we, Israel, know thee. | 2 While to me they cry out, "O, God of Israel, we know you!" |
Israel hath cast off the thing that is good, the enemy shall pursue him. | 3 The men of Israel have thrown away what is good; the enemy shall pursue them. |
They have reigned, but not by me: they have been princes, and I knew not: of their silver, and their gold they have made idols to themselves, that they might perish. | 4 They made kings, but not by my authority; they established princes, but without my approval. With their silver and gold they made idols for themselves, to their own destruction. |
Thy calf, O Samaria, is cast off, my wrath is kindled against them. How long will they be incapable of being cleansed ? | 5 Cast away your calf, O Samaria! my wrath is kindled against them; How long will they be unable to attain innocence in Israel? |
For itself also is the invention of Israel: a workman made it, and it is no god: for the calf of Samaria shall be turned to spiders' webs. | 6 The work of an artisan no god at all, Destined for the flames-- such is the calf of Samaria! |
For they shall sow wind, and reap a whirlwind, there is no standing stalk in it, the bud shall yield no meal; end if it should yield, strangers shall eat it. | 7 When they sow the wind, they shall reap the whirlwind; The stalk of grain that forms no ear can yield no flour; Even if it could, strangers would swallow it. |
Israel is swallowed up: now is he become among the nations like an unclean vessel. | 8 Israel is swallowed up; he is now among the nations a thing of no value. |
For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath given gifts to his lovers. | 9 They went up to Assyria-- a wild ass off on its own-- Ephraim bargained for lovers. |
But even though they shall have hired the nations, now will I gather them together: and they shall rest a while from the burden of the king, and the princes. | 10 Even though they bargain with the nations, I will now gather an army; King and princes shall shortly succumb under the burden. |
Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin: altars are become to him unto sin. | 11 When Ephraim made many altars to expiate sin, his altars became occasions of sin. |
I shall write to him my manifold laws, which have been accounted as foreign. | 12 Though I write for him my many ordinances, they are considered as a stranger's. |
They shall offer victims, they shall sacrifice flesh, and shall eat it, and the Lord will not receive them: now will he remember their iniquity, and will visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt. | 13 Though they offer sacrifice, immolate flesh and eat it, the LORD is not pleased with them. He shall still remember their guilt and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt. |
And Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and hath built temples: and Juda hath built many fenced cities: and I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the houses thereof. | 14 Israel has forgotten his maker and built palaces. Judah, too, has fortified many cities, but I will send fire upon his cities, to devour their castles. |
