1 Have they made thee ruler? be not lifted up: be among them as one of them.	1 - T'han fatto capo [del convito]? Non metter superbia: sii tra loro come uno di loro.
2 Have care of them, and so sit down, and when thou hast acquitted thyself of all thy charge, take thy place :	2 Datti pensiero di loro e poi siediti: e sbrigato tutto quello che devi, [allora] mettiti a tavola;
3 That thou mayst rejoice for them, and receive a crown as an ornament of grace, and get the honour of the contribution.	3 affinchè tu abbia a rallegrarti a cagione loro, e per ornamento di grazia riceva la corona, e ottenga l'onoranza de' convitati.
4 Speak, thou that art elder: for it becometh thee,	4 Parla, o anziano, - poiché a te si conviene la prima parola -
5 To speak the first word with care knowledge, and hinder not music.	5 con esatta dottrina, ma non impedir la musica.
6 Where there is no hearing, pour out words, and be not lifted up out season with thy wisdom.	6 Quando non ti si ascolta, non effonderti in discorsi, e non voler fuor di tempo far pompa della tua sapienza.
7 ,7A concert of music in a banquet wine is as a carbuncle set in gold.	7 Una gemma di carbonchio in castone d'oro, tal è un concerto di musica in un simposio.
8 As a signet of an emerald in a work of gold: so is the melody of music with pleasant and moderate wine.	8 Come un sigillo di smeraldo in legatura d'oro, così la melodia della musica [accompagnata] al dolce e moderato vino.
9 Hear in silence, and for thy reverence good grace shall come to thee.	9 Ascolta in silenzio, e con la tua modestia ti guadagnerai la buona grazia.
10 Young man, scarcely speak in thy own cause.	10 Parla, o giovane, in causa propria, appena:
11 If thou be asked twice, let thy answer be short.	11 se due volte sei interrogato, sia sommaria la tua risposta.
12 In many things be as if thou wert ignorant, and hear in silence and withal seeking.	12 In molte cose fa' come se non sapessi, e ascolta, tacendo insieme e cercando [d'imparare].
13 In the company of great men bake not upon thee: and when the ancients are present, speak not much.	13 In mezzo ai grandi non far il presuntuoso [trattandoli alla pari], e dove son vecchi, non parlar molto.
14 Before a storm goeth lightning: and before shamefacedness goeth favour: and for thy reverence good grace shall come to thee.	14 Alla grandine va innanzi il lampo, e dinanzi alla modestia incede il favore: e con la tua modestia ti guadagnerai la buona grazia.
15 And at the time of rising be not slack: but be first to run home to thy house, and there withdraw thyself, and there take thy pastime.	15 E quand'è ora d'alzarti [di tavola], non ti gingillare, ma corri tra i primi a casa tua. E là distraiti, là scherza,
16 And do what thou hast a mind, but not in sin or proud speech.	16 e fa' quel che ti salta per il capo, ma senza peccati e parole insolenti.
17 And for all these things bless the Lord, that made thee, and that replenisheth thee with all his good things.	17 E dopo tutto questo benedici il Signore che t'ha creato, e t'inebria di tutti i suoi beni.
18 He that feareth the Lord, will receive his discipline: and they that will seek him early, shall find a blessing.	18 Chi teme il Signore, accoglie la sua dottrina, e chi di buon mattino lo cerca, trova la benedizione.
19 He that seeketh the law, shall be filled with it: and he that dealeth deceitfully, shall meet with a stumblingblock therein.	19 Chi cerca la legge, n'avrà soddisfazione piena; chi fa l'ipocrita, ci troverà un'occasione di caduta.
20 They that fear the Lord, shall find just judgment, and shall kindle justice as a light.	20 Quei che temono il Signore troveranno il retto giudizio, e come luce faran risplendere giuste sentenze.
21 A sinful man will flee reproof, and will find an excuse according to his will.	21 L'uomo peccatore sfugge la correzione, e trova un'interpretazione conforme alle proprie voglie.
22 A man of counsel will not neglect understanding, a strange and proud man will not dread fear:	22 L'uomo prudente non disprezza un parere; l'uomo alieno [da prudenza] e il superbo non teme nulla.
23 Even after he hath done with fear without counsel, he shall be controlled by the things of his own seeking.	23 Anche dopo d'aver agito, è seco stesso perplesso, e dalle sue [folli] imprese è accusato.
24 My son, do thou nothing without counsel, and thou shalt not repent when thou hast done.	24 Figliuolo, non far nulla senza riflessione, e dopo il fatto non avrai a pentirti.
25 Go not in the way of ruin, and thou shalt not stumble against the stones; trust not thyself to a rugged may, lest thou set a stumblingblock to thy soul.	25 Non andar per strada rovinosa, e non inciamperai ne' sassi; non t'affidare a una strada inesplorata, per non creare inciampo a te stesso.
26 And beware of thy own children, and take heed of them of thy household.	26 Guardati anche da' propri figliuoli, e sta' attento verso la tua gente di casa.
27 In every work of thine regard thy soul in faith: for this is the keeping of the commandments.	27 In tutto quello che fai abbi fiducia nell'anima tua, perchè in questo sta l'osservanza de' comandamenti.
28 He that believeth God, taketh heed to the commandments: and he that trusteth in him, shall fare never the worse.	28 Chi ha fiducia in Dio sta attento al comandamenti, e chi in lui confida, non avrà danno.
