The Lord is the God to whom revenge belongeth: the God of revenge hath acted freely. | 1 LORD, avenging God, avenging God, shine forth! |
Lift up thyself, thou that judgest the earth: render a reward to the proud. | 2 Rise up, judge of the earth; give the proud what they deserve. |
How long shall sinners, O Lord: how long shall sinners glory? | 3 How long, LORD, shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked glory? |
Shall they utter, and speak iniquity: shall all speak who work injustice? | 4 How long will they mouth haughty speeches, go on boasting, all these evildoers? |
Thy people, O Lord, they have brought low: and they have afflicted thy inheritance. | 5 They crush your people, LORD, torment your very own. |
They have slain the widow and the stranger: and they have murdered the fatherless. | 6 They kill the widow and alien; the fatherless they murder. |
And they have said: The Lord shall not see: neither shall the God of Jacob understand. | 7 They say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice." |
Understand, ye senseless among the people: and, you fools, be wise at last. | 8 Understand, you stupid people! You fools, when will you be wise? |
He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? or he that formed the eye, doth he not consider? | 9 Does the one who shaped the ear not hear? The one who formed the eye not see? |
He that chastiseth nations, shall he not rebuke: he that teacheth man knowledge? | 10 Does the one who guides nations not rebuke? The one who teaches humans not have knowledge? |
The Lord knoweth the thoughts of men, that they are vain. | 11 The LORD does know human plans; they are only puffs of air. |
Blessed is the man whom thou shalt instruct, O Lord: and shalt teach him out of thy law. | 12 Happy those whom you guide, LORD, whom you teach by your instruction. |
That thou mayst give him rest from the evil days: till a pit be dug for the wicked. | 13 You give them rest from evil days, while a pit is being dug for the wicked. |
For the Lord will not cast off his people: neither will he forsake his own inheritance. | 14 You, LORD, will not forsake your people, nor abandon your very own. |
Until justice be turned into judgment: and they that are near it are all the upright in heart. | 15 Judgment shall again be just, and all the upright of heart will follow it. |
Who shall rise up for me against the evildoers? or who shall stand with me against the workers of iniquity? | 16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? |
Unless the Lord had been my helper, my soul had almost dwelt in hell. | 17 If the LORD were not my help, I would long have been silent in the grave. |
If I said: My foot is moved: thy mercy, O Lord, assisted me. | 18 When I say, "My foot is slipping," your love, LORD, holds me up. |
According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, thy comforts have given joy to my soul. | 19 When cares increase within me, your comfort gives me joy. |
Doth the seat of iniquity stick to thee, who framest labour in commandment? | 20 Can unjust judges be your allies, those who create burdens in the name of law, |
They will hunt after the soul of the just, and will condemn innocent blood. | 21 Those who conspire against the just and condemn the innocent to death? |
But the Lord is my refuge: and my God the help of my hope. | 22 No, the LORD is my secure height, my God, the rock where I find refuge, |
And he will render them their iniquity: and in their malice he will destroy them: the Lord our God will destroy them. | 23 Who will turn back their evil upon them and destroy them for their wickedness. Surely the LORD our God will destroy them! |
