DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose e disse:	1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
2 L’uomo può egli fare alcun profitto a Dio? Anzi a sè stesso fa profitto l’uomo intendente.	2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?
3 L’Onnipotente riceve egli alcun diletto, se tu sei giusto? O alcun guadagno, se tu cammini in integrità?	3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?
4 Ti castiga egli per paura che abbia di te? O viene egli teco a giudicio?	4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?
5 La tua malvagità non è essa grande? E le tue iniquità non son esse senza fine?	5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!
6 Conciossiachè tu abbi preso pegno da’ tuoi fratelli senza cagione, Ed abbi spogliati gl’ignudi de’ lor vestimenti.	6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,
7 Tu non hai pur dato a bere dell’acqua allo stanco, Ed hai rifiutato il pane all’affamato.	7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;
8 Ma la terra è stata per l’uomo possente, E l’uomo di rispetto è abitato in essa.	8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,
9 Tu hai rimandate le vedove a vuoto, E le braccia degli orfani son da te state fiaccate.	9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.
10 Perciò tu hai de’ lacci d’intorno, Ed uno spavento di subito ti ha conturbato.	10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;
11 Tu hai eziandio delle tenebre d’intorno, sì che tu non puoi vedere; Ed una piena d’acque ti ha coperto.	11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.
12 Iddio non è egli nell’alto de’ cieli? Riguarda il sommo delle stelle, come sono eccelse.	12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?
13 E pur tu hai detto: Che cosa conosce Iddio? Giudicherà egli per mezzo la caligine?	13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?
14 Le nuvole gli sono un nascondimento, ed egli non vede nulla, E passeggia per lo giro del cielo	14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'
15 Hai tu posto mente al cammino Che gli uomini iniqui hanno tenuto d’ogni tempo?	15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,
16 I quali sono stati ricisi fuor di tempo, E il cui fondamento è scorso come un fiume;	16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,
17 I quali dicevano a Dio: Dipartiti da noi. E che avea loro fatto l’Onnipotente?	17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'
18 Egli avea loro ripiene le case di beni; Per ciò, sia lungi da me il consiglio degli empi.	18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!
19 I giusti vedranno queste cose, e se ne rallegreranno; E l’innocente si befferà di coloro.	19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:
20 Se la nostra sostanza non è stata distrutta, Pure ha il fuoco consumato il lor rimanente	20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'
21 Deh! fa’ conoscenza con Dio, e rappacificati con lui; Per questo mezzo ti avverrà il bene.	21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.
22 Deh! ricevi la legge dalla sua bocca, E riponi le sue parole nel cuor tuo.	22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.
23 Se tu ti converti all’Onnipotente, tu sarai ristabilito, Se tu allontani dal tuo tabernacolo l’iniquità;	23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,
24 E metterai l’oro in su la polvere, E l’oro di Ofir in su le selci de’ fiumi.	24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,
25 E l’Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, E il tuo argento, e le tue forze.	25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.
26 Perciocchè allora tu prenderai diletto nell’Onnipotente, Ed alzerai la tua faccia a Dio.	26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.
27 Tu gli supplicherai, ed egli ti esaudirà, E tu gli pagherai i tuoi voti.	27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.
28 Quando avrai determinato di fare alcuna cosa, Ella ti riuscirà sicuramente, E la luce risplenderà sopra le tue vie.	28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;
29 Quando quelle saranno abbassate, allora dirai: Esaltazione; E Iddio salverà l’uomo con gli occhi chini.	29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.
30 Egli lo libererà, quantunque non sia innocente; Anzi sarà liberato per la purità delle tue mani	30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.
