| 4 Entonces salió del campo filisteo un luchador llamado Goliat, de Gat, que medía casi tres metros de altura. | 4 And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. |
| 5 Llevaba en la cabeza un casco de bronce e iba cubierto con una coraza escamada, también de bronce, que pesaba más de medio quintal. | 5 He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. |
| 6 Tenía unas canilleras de bronce en las piernas y una jabalina de bronce a la espalda. | 6 And he had greaves of bronze upon his legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. |

Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. |

| 12 David era hijo de aquel Efrateo de Belén de Judá, llamado Jesé, que tenía ocho hijos. En tiempos de Saúl, Jesé era ya un hombre viejo, de edad avanzada, | 12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. | 19 Saúl está con ellos y con todos los hombres de Israel en el valle del Terebinto, combatiendo contra los filisteos». | 19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. |

And David heard him. |

| 25 Un hombre de Israel dijo: «¿Han visto a ese hombre que sube? ¡El viene a desafiar a Israel! Al que lo derrote, el rey lo colmará de riquezas, le dará su hija como esposa y eximirá de impuestos a su casa paterna en Israel». | 25 And the men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and the man who kills him, the king will enrich with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel." |
| 26 David preguntó a los hombres que estaban con él: «¿Qué le harán al hombre que derrote a ese filisteo y ponga a salvo el honor de Israel? Porque ¿quién es ese filisteo incircunciso para desafiar a las huestes del Dios viviente?». | 26 And David said to the men who stood by him, "What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" |
| 27 La gente le repitió lo mismo: «Al que lo derrote le harán tal y tal cosa». | 27 And the people answered him in the same way, "So shall it be done to the man who kills him." |
| 28 Pero Eliab, su hermano mayor, al oírlo hablar así con esos hombres, se irritó contra él y exclamó: «¿Para qué has bajado aquí? ¿Y con quién has dejado esas pocas ovejas en el desierto? Ya sé que eres un atrevido y un mal intencionado: ¡tú has bajado para ver la batalla!». | 28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, "Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption, and the evil of your heart; for you have come down to see the battle." |
| 29 David replicó: «Pero ¿qué he hecho?». | 29 And David said, "What have I done now? Was it not but a word?" |
| 30 En seguida se apartó de él y, dirigiéndose a otro, le hizo la misma pregunta. Y la gente le respondió lo mismo que antes. | 30 And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way; and the people answered him again as before. |
| 31 Los que habían oído las palabras que dijo David se las comunicaron a Saúl, y este lo mandó llamar. | 31 When the words which David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul; and he sent for him. |
| 32 David dijo a Saúl: «No hay que desanimarse a causa de ese; tu servidor irá a luchar contra el filisteo». | 32 And David said to Saul, "Let no man's heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine." |
| 33 Pero Saúl respondió a David: «Tú no puedes batirte con ese filisteo, porque no eres más que un muchacho, y él es un hombre de guerra desde su juventud». | 33 And Saul said to David, "You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth." |

| 35 yo lo persigo, lo golpeo y se la arranco de la boca; y si él me ataca, yo lo agarro por la quijada y lo mato a golpes. | 35 I went after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth; and if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him and killed him. |
| 36 Así he matado leones y osos, y ese filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos, porque ha desafiado a las huestes del Dios viviente». | 36 Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God." |
| 37 Y David añadió: «El Señor, que me ha librado de las garras del león y del oso, también me librará de la mano de ese filisteo». Entonces Saúl dijo a David: «Ve, y que el Señor esté contigo». | 37 And David said, "The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you!" |
| 38 Saúl vistió a David con su propia indumentaria, le puso en la cabeza un casco de bronce y lo cubrió con una coraza. | 38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a helmet of bronze on his head, and clothed him with a coat of mail. |
| 39 Después, David se ciñó la espada de Saúl por encima de su indumentaria, e hizo un esfuerzo para poder caminar, porque no estaba entrenado. Entonces David dijo a Saúl: «No puedo caminar con todas estas cosas porque no estoy entrenado». Y David se las quitó. | 39 And David girded his sword over his armor, and he tried in vain to go, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, "I cannot go with these; for I am not used to them." And David put them off. |
| 40 Luego tomó en la mano su bastón, eligió en el torrente cinco piedras bien lisas, las puso en su bolsa de pastor, en la mochila, y con la honda en la mano avanzó hacia el filisteo. | 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, and chose five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in his shepherd's bag or wallet; his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine. |
| 41 El filisteo se fue acercando poco a poco a David, precedido de su escudero. | 41 And the Philistine came on and drew near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him. |
| 42 Y al fijar sus ojos en David, el filisteo lo despreció, porque vio que era apenas un muchacho, de tez clara y de buena presencia. | 42 And when the Philistine looked, and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, ruddy and comely in appearance. |
| 43 Entonces dijo a David: «¿Soy yo un perro para que vengas a mí armado de palos?». Y maldijo a David invocando a sus dioses. | 43 And the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. |
| 44 Luego le dijo: «Ven aquí, y daré tu carne a los pájaros del cielo y a los animales del campo». | 44 The Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field." |
| 45 David replicó al filisteo: «Tú avanzas contra mí armado de espada, lanza y jabalina, pero yo voy hacia ti en el nombre del Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de las huestes de Israel, a quien tú has desafiado. | 45 Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. |
| 46 Hoy mismo el Señor te entregará en mis manos; yo te derrotaré, te cortaré la cabeza, y daré tu cadáver y los cadáveres del ejército filisteo a los pájaros del cielo y a los animales del campo. Así toda la tierra sabrá que hay un Dios para Israel. | 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down, and cut off your head; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, |
| 47 Y toda esta asamblea reconocerá que el Señor da la victoria sin espada ni lanza. Porque esta es una guerra del Señor, y él los entregará en nuestras manos». | 47 and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD's and he will give you into our hand." |
| 48 Cuando el filisteo se puso en movimiento y se acercó cada vez más para enfrentar a David, este enfiló velozmente en dirección al filisteo. | 48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. |
| 49 En seguida se metió la mano en su bolsa, sacó de ella una piedra y la arrojó con la honda, hiriendo al filisteo en la frente. La piedra se le clavó en la frente, y él cayó de bruces contra el suelo. | 49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead; the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. |
| 50 Así venció David al filisteo con la honda y una piedra; le asestó un golpe mortal, sin tener una espada en su mano. | 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; there was no sword in the hand of David. |
| 51 David fue corriendo y se paró junto al filisteo; le agarró la espada, se la sacó de la vaina y lo mató, cortándole la cabeza. Al ver que su héroe estaba muerto, los filisteos huyeron. | 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. |
| 52 Inmediatamente, los hombres de Israel y de Judá lanzaron el grito de guerra y persiguieron a los filisteos hasta la entrada de Gat y hasta las puertas de Ecrón. Muchos filisteos cayeron heridos de muerte por el camino de Dos Puertas, hasta Gat y Ecrón. | 52 And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Sha-araim as far as Gath and Ekron. |

| 54 David tomó la cabeza del filisteo y la llevó a Jerusalén, pero dejó las armas en su propia carpa. | 54 And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent. |
| 55 Al ver que David salía al encuentro del filisteo, Saúl le había preguntado a Abner, el jefe del ejército: «Abner, ¿de quién es hijo ese muchacho?». «¡Por tu vida, rey, no lo sé!», respondió Abner. | 55 When Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is this youth?" And Abner said, "As your soul lives, O king, I cannot tell." |
| 56 Entonces el rey dijo: «Averigua de quién es hijo ese muchacho». | 56 And the king said, "Inquire whose son the stripling is." |
| 57 Cuando David volvió de matar al filisteo, Abner lo llevó a la presencia de Saúl con la cabeza del filisteo en la mano. | 57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. |
| 58 Saúl le preguntó: «¿De quién eres hijo, muchacho?». David respondió: «Soy hijo de tu servidor Jesé, el de Belén». | 58 And Saul said to him, "Whose son are you, young man?" And David answered, "I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite." |
