| 3 Así Israel se sometió al Baal de Peor, y por eso el Señor se indignó contra él. | 3 So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel; |
| 4 El Señor dijo a Moisés: «Toma a todos los jefes del pueblo y cuélgalos públicamente delante del Señor, para que se aplaque la indignación del Señor contra Israel». | 4 and the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them in the sun before the LORD, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel." |
| 5 Entonces Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: «Cada uno de ustedes matará a aquellos de sus hombres que se sometieron al Baal de Peor». | 5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Every one of you slay his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor." |

| 8 siguió al israelita hasta la alcoba y allí los traspasó a los dos, al israelita y a la mujer, en pleno vientre. Entonces cesó la plaga que asolaba a los israelitas. | 8 and went after the man of Israel into the inner room, and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through her body. Thus the plague was stayed from the people of Israel. |
| 9 Los que habían muerto a causa de la plaga fueron veinticuatro mil. | 9 Nevertheless those that died by the plague were twenty-four thousand. |
| 10 Y el Señor dijo a Moisés: | 10 And the LORD said to Moses, |
| 11 «Pinjás, hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha apartado mi ira de los israelitas, porque ha demostrado en medio de ellos un celo igual al mío. Por eso yo no acabé con los israelitas, dejándome llevar por mis celos. | 11 "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy. |
| 12 Y ahora declaro: Yo le concedo mi alianza de paz. | 12 Therefore say, 'Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace; |
| 13 En favor de él y de su descendencia habrá una alianza que le asegurará al sacerdocio para siempre, porque se mostró celoso por su Dios, e hizo expiación por los israelitas». | 13 and it shall be to him, and to his descendants after him, the covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the people of Israel.'" |
| 14 El israelita que fue muerto junto con la mujer madianita se llamaba Zimrí, hijo de Salú, jefe de una familia patriarcal de Simeón. | 14 The name of the slain man of Israel, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, head of a fathers' house belonging to the Simeonites. |
| 15 Y la mujer que fue muerta se llamaba Cozbí, hija de Sur, el cual era jefe de un clan en una tribu madianita. | 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was the head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian. |
| 16 Luego el Señor dijo a Moisés: | 16 And the LORD said to Moses, |
| 17 «Acomete contra los madianitas y derrótalos, | 17 "Harass the Midianites, and smite them; |
| 18 porque ellos acometieron contra ustedes con sus malas artes, en el incidente de Peor y en el de Cozbí –la hija del jefe madianita y hermana de ellos– que fue herida de muerte de la plaga motivada por el incidente de Peor». | 18 for they have harassed you with their wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague on account of Peor." |
