| 1 Una vez, el pueblo se quejó amargamente delante del Señor. Cuando el Señor los oyó, se llenó de indignación. El fuego del Señor se encendió contra ellos y devoró el extremo del campamento. | 1 And the people complained in the hearing of the LORD about their misfortunes; and when the LORD heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them, and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. |
| 2 El pueblo pidió auxilio a Moisés. Este intercedió ante el Señor, y se apagó el fuego. | 2 Then the people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire abated. |
| 3 Aquel lugar fue llamado Taberá –que significa Incendio– porque allí se había encendido el fuego del Señor contra los israelitas. | 3 So the name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of the LORD burned among them. |
| 4 La turba de los advenedizos que se habían mezclado con el pueblo se dejó llevar de la gula, y los israelitas se sentaron a llorar a gritos, diciendo: «¡Si al menos tuviéramos carne para comer! | 4 Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving; and the people of Israel also wept again, and said, "O that we had meat to eat! |
| 5 ¡Cómo recordamos los pescados que comíamos gratis en Egipto, y los pepinos, los melones, los puerros, las cebollas y los ajos! | 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; |
| 6 ¡Ahora nuestras gargantas están resecas! ¡Estamos privados de todo, y nuestros ojos no ven nada más que el maná!». | 6 but now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at." |
| 7 El maná se parecía a la semilla de cilantro y su color era semejante al del bedelio. | 7 Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium. |
| 8 El pueblo tenía que ir a buscarlo; una vez recogido, lo trituraban con piedras de moler o lo machacaban en un mortero, lo cocían en una olla, y lo preparaban en forma de galletas. Su sabor era como el de un pastel apetitoso. | 8 The people went about and gathered it, and ground it in mills or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was like the taste of cakes baked with oil. |
| 9 De noche, cuando el rocío caía sobre el campamento, también caía el maná. | 9 When the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell with it. |
| 10 Moisés oyó llorar al pueblo, que se había agrupado por familias, cada uno a la entrada de su carpa. El Señor se llenó de una gran indignación, pero Moisés, vivamente contrariado, | 10 Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and the anger of the LORD blazed hotly, and Moses was displeased. |
| 11 le dijo: «¿Por qué tratas tan duramente a tu servidor? ¿Por qué no has tenido compasión de mí, y me has cargado con el peso de todo este pueblo? | 11 Moses said to the LORD, "Why hast thou dealt ill with thy servant? And why have I not found favor in thy sight, that thou dost lay the burden of all this people upon me? |
| 12 ¿Acaso he sido yo el que concibió a todo este pueblo, o el que lo dio a luz, para que me digas: «Llévalo en tu regazo, como la nodriza lleva a un niño de pecho, hasta la tierra que juraste dar a sus padres?» | 12 Did I conceive all this people? Did I bring them forth, that thou shouldst say to me, 'Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries the sucking child, to the land which thou didst swear to give their fathers?' |
| 13 ¿De dónde voy a sacar carne para dar de comer a todos los que están llorando a mi lado y me dicen: «Danos carne para comer»? | 13 Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me and say, 'Give us meat, that we may eat.' |
| 14 Yo solo no puedo soportar el peso de todo este pueblo: mis fuerzas no dan para tanto. | 14 I am not able to carry all this people alone, the burden is too heavy for me. |
| 15 Si me vas a seguir tratando de ese modo, mátame de una vez. Así me veré libre de mis males». | 15 If thou wilt deal thus with me, kill me at once, if I find favor in thy sight, that I may not see my wretchedness." |
| 16 El Señor respondió a Moisés: «Reúneme a setenta de los ancianos de Israel –deberás estar seguro de que son realmente ancianos y escribas del pueblo– llévalos a la Carpa del Encuentro, y que permanezcan allí junto contigo. | 16 And the LORD said to Moses, "Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. |
| 17 Yo bajaré hasta allí, te hablaré, y tomaré algo del espíritu que tú posees, para comunicárselo a ellos. Así podrán compartir contigo el peso de este pueblo, y no tendrás que soportarlo tú solo. | 17 And I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take some of the spirit which is upon you and put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. |
| 18 También dirás al pueblo: Purifíquense para mañana y comerán carne. Ya que ustedes han llorado delante del Señor, diciendo: «¡Si al menos tuviéramos carne para comer! ¡Qué bien estábamos en Egipto!», el Señor les dará de comer carne. | 18 And say to the people, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept in the hearing of the LORD, saying, "Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt." Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you shall eat. |
| 19 Y no la comerán un día, ni dos, ni diez, ni veinte, | 19 You shall not eat one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, |
| 20 sino un mes entero, hasta que se les salga por las narices y les provoque repugnancia. Porque han despreciado al Señor que está en medio de ustedes, y han llorado en su presencia, diciendo: «¿Para qué habremos salido de Egipto?». | 20 but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have rejected the LORD who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, 'Why did we come forth out of Egypt?'" |
| 21 Moisés dijo entonces: «El pueblo que me rodea está formado por seiscientos mil hombres de a pie, ¿y tú dices que le darás carne para comer un mes entero? | 21 But Moses said, "The people among whom I am number six hundred thousand on foot; and thou hast said, 'I will give them meat, that they may eat a whole month!' |
| 22 Si se degollaran ovejas y vacas, ¿alcanzarían para todos? Y si se reunieran todos los peces del mar, ¿tendrían bastante?». | 22 Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to suffice them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?" |
| 23 Pero el Señor respondió a Moisés: «¿Acaso hay límite para el poder del Señor? En seguida verás si lo que acabo de decirte se cumple o no». | 23 And the LORD said to Moses, "Is the LORD's hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not." |
| 24 Moisés salió a comunicar al pueblo las palabras del Señor. Luego reunió a setenta hombres entre los ancianos del pueblo, y los hizo poner de pie alrededor de la Carpa. | 24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and placed them round about the tent. |
| 25 Entonces el Señor descendió en la nube y le habló a Moisés. Después tomó algo del espíritu que estaba sobre él y lo infundió a los setenta ancianos. Y apenas el espíritu se posó sobre ellos, comenzaron a hablar en éxtasis; pero después no volvieron a hacerlo. | 25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was upon him and put it upon the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did so no more. |
| 26 Dos hombres –uno llamado Eldad y el otro Medad– se habían quedado en el campamento; y como figuraban entre los inscritos, el espíritu se posó sobre ellos, a pesar de que no habían ido a la Carpa. Y también ellos se pusieron a hablar en éxtasis. | 26 Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested upon them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. |
| 27 Un muchacho vino corriendo y comunicó la noticia a Moisés, con estas palabras: «Eldad y Medad están profetizando en el campamento». | 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." |
| 28 Josué, hijo de Nun, que desde su juventud era ayudante de Moisés, intervino diciendo: «Moisés, señor mío, no se lo permitas». | 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, "My lord Moses, forbid them." |
| 29 Pero Moisés le respondió: «¿Acaso estás celoso a causa de mí? ¡Ojalá todos fueran profetas en el pueblo del Señor, porque él les infunde su espíritu!». | 29 But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!" |
| 30 Luego Moisés volvió a entrar en el campamento con todos los ancianos de Israel. | 30 And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. |
| 31 Entonces se levantó un viento enviado por el Señor, que trajo del mar una bandada de codornices y las precipitó sobre el campamento. Las codornices cubrieron toda la extensión de un día de camino, a uno y otro lado del campamento, hasta la altura de un metro sobre la superficie del suelo. | 31 And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and it brought quails from the sea, and let them fall beside the camp, about a day's journey on this side and a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the face of the earth. |
| 32 El pueblo se puso a recoger codornices todo el día, toda la noche y todo el día siguiente. El que había recogido menos, tenía diez medidas de unos cuatrocientos cincuenta litros cada una. Y las esparcieron alrededor de todo el campamento. | 32 And the people rose all that day, and all night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails; he who gathered least gathered ten homers; and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. |
| 33 La carne estaba todavía entre sus dientes, sin masticar, cuando la ira del Señor se encendió contra el pueblo, y el Señor lo castigó con una enorme mortandad. | 33 While the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague. |
| 34 El lugar fue llamado Quibrot Hataavá –que significa Tumbas de la Gula– porque allí enterraron a la gente que se dejó llevar por la gula. | 34 Therefore the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had the craving. |
| 35 Desde Quibrot Hataavá el pueblo siguió avanzando hasta Jaserot, y allí se detuvo. | 35 From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth; and they remained at Hazeroth. |
