1 Paul regarda un moment le Sanhédrin, puis il leur dit: "Frères, je n’ai rien à me reprocher devant Dieu pour la façon dont j’ai agi jusqu’ici.”	1 Paul looked steadily at the Sanhedrin and began to speak, 'My brothers, to this day I have conductedmyself before God with a perfectly clear conscience.'
2 Sur ce, le grand prêtre Ananias ordonna à ses assistants de le frapper sur la bouche.	2 At this the high priest Ananias ordered his attendants to strike him on the mouth.
3 Mais Paul lui adressa ces mots: "C’est Dieu qui va te frapper, muraille blanchie! Tu es là pour me juger selon la Loi, et tu violes la Loi en ordonnant de me frapper.”	3 Then Paul said to him, 'God wil surely strike you, you whitewashed wal ! How can you sit there tojudge me according to the Law, and then break the Law by ordering a man to strike me?'
4 Les assistants lui dirent: "Tu oses insulter le grand prêtre de Dieu?”	4 The attendants said, 'Are you insulting the high priest of God?
5 Paul répondit: "Frères, je ne savais pas qu’il était le grand prêtre. Bien sûr il est écrit: Tu ne maudiras pas le chef de ton peuple.”	5 Paul answered, 'Brothers, I did not realise it was the high priest; certainly scripture says, "You wil notcurse your people's leader." '
6 Paul savait qu’une partie d’entre eux étaient Saducéens, et les autres Pharisiens, c’est pourquoi il s’écria en plein Sanhédrin: "Frères, je suis Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens, c’est pour notre espérance que je suis mis en accusation, pour la résurrection des morts!”	6 Now Paul was wel aware that one party was made up of Sadducees and the other of Pharisees, so hecal ed out in the Sanhedrin, 'Brothers, I am a Pharisee and the son of Pharisees. It is for our hope in theresurrection of the dead that I am on trial.'
7 À ces mots, les Pharisiens et les Saducéens entrèrent en conflit, et l’assemblée se divisa.	7 As soon as he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assemblywas split between the two parties.
8 Car les Saducéens disent qu’il n’y a pas de résurrection, et pas davantage d’anges ou d’esprit, alors que les Pharisiens admettent l’un et l’autre.	8 For the Sadducees say there is neither resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, while the Pharisees accept allthree.
9 Il y eut donc un grand vacarme. Quelques maîtres de la Loi du parti des Pharisiens se levèrent pour déclarer: "Nous ne voyons rien à reprocher à cet homme: peut-être qu’un esprit ou un ange lui a parlé.”	9 The shouting grew louder, and some of the scribes from the Pharisees' party stood up and protestedstrongly, 'We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?'
10 Le conflit prenait des proportions et le commandant eut peur qu’ils ne mettent Paul en pièces. Il ordonna à la troupe de descendre et de le leur reprendre pour le conduire à la forteresse.	10 Feeling was running high, and the tribune, afraid that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered histroops to go down and haul him out and bring him into the fortress.
11 La nuit suivante le Seigneur vint à Paul et lui dit: "Courage! Tu as été mon témoin à Jérusalem, il faut que tu le sois pareillement à Rome.”	11 Next night, the Lord appeared to him and said, 'Courage! You have borne witness for me inJerusalem, now you must do the same in Rome.'
12 Quand il fit jour, un certain nombre de Juifs firent un complot. Ils s’engagèrent sous peine de malédiction à ne rien manger ni boire tant qu’ils n’auraient pas tué Paul.	12 When it was day, the Jews held a secret meeting at which they made a vow not to eat or drink untilthey had kil ed Paul.
13 Ils étaient plus de quarante à avoir fait ensemble ce serment.	13 More than forty of them entered this pact,
14 Quelques-uns d’entre eux allèrent trouver les grands prêtres et les Anciens et leur dirent: "Nous nous sommes engagés sous peine de malédiction à ne rien avaler jusqu’à ce que nous ayons tué Paul.	14 and they went to the chief priests and elders and told them, 'We have made a solemn vow to letnothing pass our lips until we have killed Paul.
15 Allez donc trouver le commandant avec les Anciens, et demandez-lui d’amener Paul parce que vous voulez examiner à fond son cas. Et nous, avant qu’il n’approche, nous sommes là pour le tuer.	15 Now it is up to you and the Sanhedrin together to apply to the tribune to bring him down to you, asthough you meant to examine his case more closely; we, on our side, are prepared to dispose of him before hereaches you.'
16 Le fils de la sœur de Paul entendit parler du complot qui se tramait. Il alla à la forteresse pour le lui faire savoir.	16 But the son of Paul's sister heard of the ambush they were laying and made his way into the fortressand told Paul,
17 Paul appela alors l’un des centurions et lui dit: "Conduis donc ce garçon au commandant, il a une information à lui donner.”	17 who cal ed one of the centurions and said, 'Take this young man to the tribune; he has something totel him.'
18 L’autre l’emmena chez le commandant auquel il dit: "Le prisonnier Paul vient de m’appeler pour me demander de t’amener ce garçon. Il a quelque chose à te dire.”	18 So the man took him to the tribune, and reported, 'The prisoner Paul summoned me and requestedme to bring this young man to you; he has something to tel you.'
19 Le commandant le prit par le bras et, une fois seuls, il posa la question: "Quelle nouvelle as-tu pour moi?”	19 Then the tribune took him by the hand and drew him aside and questioned him in private, 'What is ityou have to tel me?'
20 Et le garçon lui dit: "Les Juifs ont pris une décision; ils vont te demander de faire descendre Paul demain au Sanhédrin sous le prétexte qu’ils veulent regarder son cas de plus près.	20 He replied, 'The Jews have made a plan to ask you to take Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, asthough they meant to enquire more closely into his case.
21 Mais toi, ne les crois pas. Il y a là plus de quarante hommes qui se sont engagés sous peine de malédiction à ne pas manger ni boire avant de l’avoir tué, et ils le guettent. Ils sont prêts et n’attendent que ta réponse.”	21 Do not believe them. There are more than forty of them lying in wait for him, and they have vowed notto eat or drink until they have got rid of him. They are ready now and only waiting for your order to be given.'
22 Le commandant renvoya le garçon avec cette recommandation: "Ne dis surtout à personne que tu m’as révélé cette affaire.”	22 The tribune let the young man go with this order, 'Tell no one that you have given me this information.'
23 Il appela alors deux centurions et leur dit: "Tenez prêts 200 soldats pour aller à Césarée, et avec eux 70 chevaux et 200 auxiliaires. Départ au troisième quart de la nuit.	23 Then he summoned two of the centurions and said, 'Get two hundred soldiers ready to leave forCaesarea by the third hour of the night with seventy cavalry and two hundred auxiliaries;
24 Vous préparerez des montures pour y faire monter Paul et le mettre en sûreté chez le gouverneur Félix.”	24 provide horses for Paul, and deliver him unharmed to Felix the governor.'
25 Il écrivit ensuite une lettre qui disait:	25 He also wrote a letter in these terms:
26 "Claudius Lysias envoie ses respects à son Excellence le gouverneur Félix.	26 'Claudius Lysias to his Excel ency the governor Felix, greetings.
27 Les Juifs s’étaient emparés de cet homme et ils étaient sur le point de le tuer. J’ai su qu’il était romain, aussi je suis intervenu avec la troupe et je l’ai enlevé.	27 This man had been seized by the Jews and would have been murdered by them; but I came on thescene with my troops and got him away, having discovered that he was a Roman citizen.
28 J’ai voulu savoir de quoi ils l’accusaient et je l’ai amené à leur Sanhédrin.	28 Wanting to find out what charge they were making against him, I brought him before their Sanhedrin.
29 Là j’ai vu qu’on l’accusait pour des histoires de leur loi, mais qu’il n’y avait aucun crime qui mérite la mort ou la prison.	29 I found that the accusation concerned disputed points of their Law, but that there was no chargedeserving death or imprisonment.
30 Maintenant on m’informe d’un complot qu’ils ont monté contre lui; je te l’envoie donc et je fais savoir à ses accusateurs qu’ils aillent te parler à son sujet.”	30 Acting on information that there was a conspiracy against the man, I hasten to send him to you, and have notified his accusers that they must state their case against him in your presence.'
31 Les soldats prirent Paul conformément aux ordres reçus et, de nuit, ils partirent avec lui pour Antipatris.	31 The soldiers carried out their orders; they took Paul and escorted him by night to Antipatris.
32 Le lendemain ils revinrent à la citadelle, laissant les cavaliers continuer avec lui.	32 Next day they left the mounted escort to go on with him and returned to the fortress.
33 Ceux-ci remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul.	33 On arriving at Caesarea the escort delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him.
34 Le gouverneur s’informa, demanda de quelle contrée Paul était ressortissant et, quand il sut qu’il était de Cilicie, il déclara:	34 When he had read it, he asked Paul what province he came from. Learning that he was from Ciliciahe said,
35 "Je t’entendrai quand tes accusateurs se présenteront.” Après quoi il ordonna de le garder dans le palais d’Hérode.	35 'I wil hear your case as soon as your accusers are here too.' Then he ordered him to be held inHerod's praetorium.
