1 Écoute, Israël, aujourd’hui tu vas traverser le Jourdain, tu vas déloger des nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que toi. Leurs villes sont grandes et leurs murailles s’élèvent jusqu’au ciel,	1 “Listen, O Israel: You shall cross over the Jordan today, in order to possess nations, very great and stronger than yourself, cities vast and walled even to the sky,
2 leur peuple est nombreux et de haute taille, c’est la race des Anakim (tu les connais et tu as entendu dire: Qui peut résister aux fils d’Anak?)	2 a people great and lofty, the sons of the Anakim, whom you yourselves have seen and heard, against whom no one is able to stand.
3 Mais tu dois savoir que Yahvé ton Dieu passera lui-même devant toi comme un feu dévorant. Il exterminera ces peuplades, il te les soumettra pour que tu les dépouilles et que tu les élimines rapidement comme Yahvé te l’a dit.	3 Therefore, you shall know today that the Lord your God himself will pass over before you, like a devouring and consuming fire, to crush and to wipe away and to utterly ruin them before your face, quickly, just as he has spoken to you.
4 Mais lorsque Yahvé ton Dieu les aura chassées devant toi, ne dis pas: “Je méritais bien que Yahvé me fasse venir et conquérir ce pays.” Car Yahvé chasse ces peuplades devant toi pour les punir de leurs fautes.	4 You should not say in your heart, when the Lord your God will have destroyed them in your sight: ‘It is because of my justice that the Lord led me in, so that I might possess this land, while these nations have been destroyed because of their impiety.’
5 Ce n’est ni ton mérite, ni ta bonne conscience qui te font conquérir ce pays. Yahvé ton Dieu chasse ces nations devant toi pour punir leurs fautes et pour accomplir la promesse jurée à tes pères Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.	5 For it is not because of your justices or the uprightness of your heart that you will enter, so that you may possess their lands. Instead, it is because they have acted wickedly that they are destroyed upon your arrival, and so that the Lord may accomplish his word, which he promised under oath to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
6 Sache-le donc bien, ce n’est pas à cause de tes mérites que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne ce bon pays et que tu le possèdes, car tu es un peuple à la nuque raide.	6 Therefore, know that the Lord your God will not give you this excellent land as a possession due to your justices, for you are a very stiff-necked people.
7 Souviens-toi, ne l’oublie pas, tu as irrité Yahvé ton Dieu dans le désert, depuis le jour où tu es sorti du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ton arrivée en ce lieu. Sans cesse, vous vous êtes révoltés contre Yahvé.	7 Remember, and never forget, how you provoked the Lord your God to anger in the wilderness. You have always contended against the Lord, from the day that you went forth from Egypt, even to this place.
8 Vous avez irrité Yahvé à l’Horeb, et Yahvé s’est mis en colère contre vous au point de vouloir vous exterminer.	8 For at Horeb also, you provoked him, and, becoming angry, he was willing to destroy you,
9 J’étais alors monté sur la montagne pour recevoir les tables de pierre, les tables de l’Alliance que Yahvé concluait avec vous, et j’étais resté sur la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits sans manger de pain et sans boire d’eau.	9 when I ascended onto the mountain, so that I might receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord formed with you. And I persevered on the mountain for forty days and nights, neither eating bread, nor drinking water.
10 Alors Yahvé m’a donné les deux tables de pierre écrites du doigt de Dieu. Toutes ses paroles y étaient écrites, toutes celles que Yahvé avait dites devant vous sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, le jour où vous étiez rassemblés.	10 And the Lord gave me two tablets of stone, written with the finger of God and containing all the words that he spoke to you on the mountain from the midst of fire, while the people, being stirred up, were assembled together.
11 Au bout de quarante jours et de quarante nuits, Yahvé m’a donné les deux tables de pierre, les tables de l’Alliance.	11 And when forty days, and as many nights, had passed, the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.
12 Puis il m’a dit: “Lève-toi, descends vite, car ton peuple que j’ai fait sortir d’Égypte a déjà mal tourné. Tout de suite ils se sont détournés de la voie que je leur avais ordonnée, ils se sont fait une idole de métal fondu.”	12 And he said to me: ‘Rise up, and descend quickly from here. For your people, whom you led away from Egypt, have quickly abandoned the way that you have shown to them, and they have made a molten idol for themselves.’
13 Yahvé me dit encore: “J’ai vu que ce peuple a la tête dure.	13 And again, the Lord said to me: ‘I discern that this people is stiff-necked.
14 Laisse-moi faire, je vais les exterminer et j’effacerai leurs noms de dessous les cieux, puis je ferai sortir de toi une nation plus puissante et plus nombreuse que celle-là.”	14 Depart from me, so that I may crush them, and abolish their name from under heaven, and appoint you over a nation, which will be greater and stronger than this one.’
15 Je suis alors redescendu de la montagne qui était tout en feu, je tenais de mes deux mains les deux tables de l’Alliance.	15 And as I was descending from the burning mountain, and I held the two tablets of the covenant with both hands,
16 Alors j’ai vu que vous aviez péché contre Yahvé votre Dieu, vous vous étiez fait un veau de métal fondu. Vous n’aviez vraiment pas tardé à vous détourner de la voie que Yahvé vous avait indiquée.	16 and I had seen that you had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made a molten calf for yourselves, and had quickly abandoned his way, which he had revealed to you,
17 J’ai pris les tables à deux mains, je les ai jetées à terre et je les ai brisées sous vos yeux.	17 I threw down the tablets from my hands, and I broke them in your sight.
18 Puis je me suis jeté à terre devant Dieu et, comme la première fois, je suis resté 40 jours et 40 nuits sans manger de pain et sans boire d’eau, à cause de votre péché: vous aviez fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé et vous l’aviez irrité.	18 And I fell prostrate before the Lord, just as before, for forty days and nights, not eating bread, and not drinking water, because of all your sins, which you had committed against the Lord, and because you provoked him to anger.
19 Je tremblais, pensant à la colère et à la fureur de Yahvé envers vous. Il voulait vous exterminer mais, une fois encore, Yahvé m’a écouté.	19 For I feared his indignation and wrath, which had been stirred up against you, so that he was willing to destroy you. And the Lord heeded me at this time also.
20 Yahvé se mit aussi en colère contre Aaron, il voulait le faire mourir. Pour Aaron aussi, je me suis mis en prière.	20 Likewise, he became vehemently angry against Aaron, and he was willing to destroy him, and I prayed for him similarly.
21 J’ai pris votre péché, ce veau que vous aviez fabriqué, et je l’ai jeté au feu; je l’ai fait passer par la meule, je l’ai réduit en poudre et j’ai jeté cette poudre dans le torrent qui descend de la montagne.	21 But as for your sin which you committed, that is, the calf, taking hold of it, I burned it with fire. And breaking it into pieces, and reducing it entirely to dust, I threw it into the torrent that descends from the mountain.
22 Ce fut pareil à Tabéra, à Massa, et à Kibrot-Ha-Taava: vous avez irrité Yahvé.	22 Likewise, at the Burning, and at the Temptation, and at the Graves of Lust, you provoked the Lord.
23 Lorsque Yahvé vous a envoyés de Qadesh-Barné en vous disant: “Montez et prenez possession du pays que je vous ai donné!”, vous vous êtes révoltés contre les ordres de Yahvé votre Dieu; vous n’avez pas eu confiance en lui et vous ne l’avez pas écouté.	23 And when he sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘Ascend and possess the land, which I have given to you,’ even so, you spurned the command of the Lord your God, and you did not believe him, nor were you willing to listen to his voice.
24 Depuis le jour où je vous ai connus vous avez été rebelles à Yahvé.	24 Instead, you were ever rebellious, from the day when I first began to know you.
25 Je me suis donc jeté à terre devant Yahvé. Oui, pendant quarante jours et quarante nuits j’étais à terre devant Yahvé, car il parlait de vous exterminer.	25 And so, I lay prostrate before the Lord for forty days and nights, as I humbly begged him, lest he destroy you, just as he had threatened to do.
26 J’ai supplié Yahvé, je lui ai dit: “Seigneur Yahvé, ne détruis pas ce peuple qui est ton bien propre, que tu t’es acquis par ta puissance, que tu as fait sortir d’Égypte à main forte.	26 And praying, I said: ‘O Lord God, do not destroy your people and your inheritance, whom you have redeemed in your greatness, whom you have led away from Egypt with a strong hand.
27 Souviens-toi de tes serviteurs Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, et oublie que ce peuple a été insupportable, mauvais et pécheur.	27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not look upon the stubbornness of this people, nor upon their wickedness and sinfulness.
28 Sinon l’on dira au pays dont tu nous as délivrés: Yahvé n’a pas été capable de les faire entrer dans le pays qu’il leur avait promis; les Israélites l’ont tellement dégoûté, qu’après les avoir fait sortir il les a laissés mourir dans le désert.	28 Otherwise, perhaps the inhabitants of the land, out of which you have led us, may say: “The Lord was not able to lead them into the land, which he promised to them. And he hated them; therefore, he led them out, so that he might put them to death in the wilderness.”
29 “Rappelle-toi qu’ils sont ton peuple et ton bien propre, et que tu les as fait sortir par la force, en frappant de grands coups.”	29 These are your people and your inheritance, whom you have led out by your great strength, and with your outstretched arm.’ ”
