1 Après cela, on vint dire à Joseph: “Ton père est malade!” Alors il prit avec lui ses deux fils Manassé et Éphraïm.	1 Some time afterward, Joseph was informed, "Your father is failing." So he took along with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
2 On avertit Jacob: “Ton fils Joseph est venu te voir.” Israël rassembla ses forces pour s’asseoir sur son lit.	2 When Jacob was told, "Your son Joseph has come to you," he rallied his strength and sat up in bed.
3 Jacob dit à Joseph: “Lorsque le Dieu de la Steppe m’est apparu à Louz, au pays de Canaan, il m’a béni en ces termes:	3 Jacob then said to Joseph: "God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessing me,
4 Je te ferai grandir, je te multiplierai, je ferai de toi une communauté de peuples, et je donnerai ce pays à ta descendance après toi, pour qu’elle soit sa propriété pour toujours.	4 he said, 'I will make you fertile and numerous and raise you into an assembly of tribes, and I will give this land to your descendants after you as a permanent possession.'
5 Aussi je veux prendre aujourd’hui comme mes enfants ces deux fils qui te sont nés en Égypte avant que je te rejoigne: Éphraïm et Manassé sont à moi, au même titre que Ruben et Siméon.	5 Your two sons, therefore, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I joined you here, shall be mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine as much as Reuben and Simeon are mine.
6 Mais les enfants que tu as eus après eux, resteront à toi: ils recevront de leurs frères aînés leur nom et leur part d’héritage.	6 Progeny born to you after them shall remain yours; but their heritage shall be recorded in the names of their two brothers.
7 Quant à moi, lorsque je venais de Paddân, Rachel mourut dans mes bras au pays de Canaan, sur la route, à une bonne distance d’Éfrata. C’est là que je l’ai enterrée, sur la route d’Éfrata, c’est-à-dire Bethléem.”	7 I do this because, when I was returning from Paddan, your mother Rachel died, to my sorrow, during the journey in Canaan, while we were still a short distance from Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)."
8 En voyant les fils de Joseph, Israël demanda: “Ceux-là, qui sont-ils?”	8 When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he asked, "Who are these?"
9 Joseph répondit à son père: “Ce sont mes fils! Ce sont les fils que Dieu m’a donnés ici.” Israël lui dit: “Amène-les-moi, je te prie, et je les bénirai.”	9 "They are my sons," Joseph answered his father, "whom God has given me here." "Bring them to me," said his father, "that I may bless them."
10 La vue d’Israël avait beaucoup baissé à cause de son grand âge, et il ne voyait presque plus. Joseph fit donc venir ses deux fils près de son père qui les embrassa et les prit dans ses bras.	10 (Now Israel's eyes were dim from age, and he could not see well.) When Joseph brought his sons close to him, he kissed and embraced them.
11 Israël dit à Joseph: “Je ne pensais plus revoir ton visage et voici que Dieu m’a même fait voir tes enfants!”	11 Then Israel said to Joseph, "I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your descendants as well!"
12 Alors Joseph les retira des bras de son père et se prosterna la face contre terre.	12 Joseph removed them from his father's knees and bowed down before him with his face to the ground.
13 Puis Joseph prit ses deux fils, Éphraïm à sa droite pour qu’il soit à la gauche d’Israël, et Manassé à sa gauche pour qu’il soit à la droite d’Israël. Et il les fit approcher.	13 Then Joseph took the two, Ephraim with his right hand, to Israel's left, and Manasseh with his left hand, to Israel's right, and led them to him.
14 Mais Israël étendit sa main droite et la posa sur la tête d’Éphraïm, qui était le second; croisant ainsi ses mains, il posa sa main gauche sur la tête de Manassé, alors que Manassé était l’aîné.	14 But Israel, crossing his hands, put out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, although he was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, although he was the first-born.
15 Israël bénit Joseph: “Que le Dieu devant qui ont marché mes pères, Abraham et Isaac, que le Dieu qui fut mon berger depuis ma naissance jusqu’à aujourd’hui,	15 Then he blessed them with these words: "May the God in whose ways my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd from my birth to this day,
16 que l’Ange qui m’a délivré de tout mal, bénisse ces garçons! Que grâce à eux on se souvienne de mon nom, comme du nom de mes pères, Abraham et Isaac! Qu’ils grandissent de plus en plus au milieu du pays!”	16 The Angel who has delivered me from all harm, bless these boys That in them my name be recalled, and the names of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, And they may become teeming multitudes upon the earth!"
17 Joseph remarqua que son père plaçait sa main droite sur la tête d’Éphraïm et cela lui déplut. Il prit donc la main de son père pour la déplacer de la tête d’Éphraïm sur la tête de Manassé.	17 When Joseph saw that his father had laid his right hand on Ephraim's head, this seemed wrong to him; so he took hold of his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's,
18 Et Joseph dit à son père: “Ne fais pas comme cela, mon père, car c’est celui-ci qui est l’aîné. Pose ta main droite sur sa tête.”	18 saying, "That is not right, father; the other one is the first-born; lay your right hand on his head!"
19 Son père refusa et répondit: “Je le sais bien, mon fils! Lui aussi deviendra un peuple, lui aussi grandira! Cependant son frère plus jeune deviendra plus grand que lui, et sa descendance deviendra un ensemble de nations.”	19 But his father resisted. "I know it, son," he said, "I know. That one too shall become a tribe, and he too shall be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall surpass him, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations."
20 Il les bénit donc en ce jour, en disant: “Quand on bénira, en Israël, on vous citera en exemple: Que Dieu te rende semblable à Éphraïm et à Manassé”. Mais il plaça Éphraïm avant Manassé.	20 So when he blessed them that day and said, "By you shall the people of Israel pronounce blessings; may they say, 'God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh,'" he placed Ephraim before Manasseh.
21 Israël dit à Joseph: “Je vais mourir, mais Dieu sera avec vous: il vous fera revenir au pays de vos pères.	21 Then Israel said to Joseph: "I am about to die. But God will be with you and will restore you to the land of your fathers.
22 Voici ce que je te donne de plus qu’à tes frères: cette parcelle de terre, Sichem, que j’ai conquise sur les Amorites par mon épée et par mon arc.”	22 As for me, I give to you, as to the one above his brothers, Shechem, which I captured from the Amorites with my sword and bow."
