1 Alors Joseph vint prévenir le Pharaon: “Mon père et mes frères, lui dit-il, sont arrivés du pays de Canaan avec leur petit et leur gros bétail, et tout ce qui leur appartient. Ils sont au pays de Gossen.”	1 And so Joseph entered and reported to Pharaoh, saying: “My father and brothers, their sheep and herds, and everything that they possess, have arrived from the land of Canaan. And behold, they stand together in the land of Goshen.”
2 Joseph prit cinq de ses frères et les conduisit devant le Pharaon.	2 Likewise, he stood in the sight of the king five men, the last of his brothers.
3 Pharaon dit à ses frères: “Que faites-vous?” Ils répondirent au Pharaon: “Tes serviteurs élèvent du petit bétail, nous le faisons comme le faisaient nos pères.”	3 And he questioned them, “What do you have for work?” They responded: “Your servants are pastors of sheep, both we and our fathers.
4 Ils firent cette demande au Pharaon: “Nous sommes venus pour habiter dans ce pays, car il n’y a plus de pâturages pour le troupeau de tes serviteurs, tellement la famine est grande au pays de Canaan. Tes serviteurs pourront-ils s’installer maintenant au pays de Gossen?”	4 We came to sojourn in your land, because there is no grass for the flocks of your servants, the famine being very grievous in the land of Canaan. And we petition you that you may order us, your servants, to be in the land of Goshen.”
5 Le Pharaon dit alors à Joseph: “Ton père et tes frères sont venus me trouver.	5 And so the king said to Joseph: “Your father and brothers have come to you.
6 Le pays d’Égypte est à ta disposition; installe ton père et tes frères dans le meilleur endroit du pays. Qu’ils habitent au pays de Gossen, et si tu sais qu’il y a parmi eux des hommes de valeur, tu les prendras comme chefs de mes propres troupeaux.”	6 The land of Egypt is in your sight. Cause them to live in the best place, and deliver to them the land of Goshen. And if you know there to be industrious men among them, appoint these as foremen over my cattle.”
7 Joseph fit donc venir son père Jacob; il le présenta au Pharaon et Jacob salua le Pharaon.	7 After this, Joseph brought in his father to the king, and he stood him in his sight. He blessed him,
8 Le Pharaon demanda à Jacob: “Quel est ton âge?”	8 and he questioned him: “How many are the days of the years of your life?”
9 Jacob répondit au Pharaon: “J’en suis à la cent trentième année de ma vie errante, mais je n’ai pas atteint le grand âge de mes pères, qui étaient nomades comme moi. Ma vie a été courte et malheureuse.”	9 He responded, “The days of my sojourn are one hundred and thirty years, few and unworthy, and they do not reach even to the days of the sojourning of my fathers.”
10 Jacob salua de nouveau le Pharaon et se retira de devant lui.	10 And blessing the king, he went outside.
11 Joseph installa donc son père et ses frères, il leur donna des terres au pays d’Égypte, dans le meilleur endroit, dans la terre de Ramsès, comme l’avait ordonné le Pharaon.	11 Truly, Joseph gave his father and brothers a possession in Egypt, in the best place of the land, in Rameses, as Pharaoh had instructed.
12 Joseph se chargea de nourrir son père et ses frères, ainsi que toute la famille de son père; il leur donna du pain selon le nombre des enfants.	12 And he fed them, along with all his father’s house, providing portions of food to each one.
13 Il n’y avait plus de pain sur toute la terre, tellement la famine était grande. Le pays d’Égypte et le pays de Canaan étaient épuisés par cette famine.	13 For in the whole world there was a lack of bread, and a famine had oppressed the land, most of all Egypt and Canaan,
14 Alors Joseph rassembla tout l’argent que donnaient les Égyptiens et les Cananéens lorsqu’ils venaient acheter du blé. Et Joseph fit rentrer cet argent dans le palais du Pharaon.	14 from which he gathered together all the money for the grain that they bought, and he took it into the treasury of the king.
15 Mais bientôt il n’y eut plus d’argent, ni en Égypte, ni en Canaan. Tous les Égyptiens vinrent donc trouver Joseph: “Donne-nous du pain, lui dirent-ils, même si nous n’avons plus d’argent. Faut-il donc que nous mourions sous tes yeux?”	15 And when the buyers had run out of money, all Egypt came to Joseph, saying: “Give us bread. Why should we die in your sight, lacking money?”
16 Joseph leur répondit: “Si vous n’avez plus d’argent, donnez-moi vos troupeaux et je vous donnerai du pain en échange.”	16 And he responded to them: “Bring me your cattle, and I will give food to you in exchange for them, if you do not have money.”
17 Ils amenèrent donc leurs troupeaux à Joseph, et Joseph leur donna du pain en échange des chevaux, des troupeaux de petit et gros bétail et même des ânes. Il leur fournit des aliments cette année-là au prix de tous leurs troupeaux.	17 And when they had brought them, he gave them food for their horses, and sheep, and oxen, and donkeys. And he sustained them in that year in exchange for their cattle.
18 À la fin de cette année-là, ils vinrent de nouveau le trouver et lui dirent: “Mon seigneur sait bien que nous n’avons plus d’argent et que nos troupeaux appartiennent maintenant à mon seigneur. Nous n’avons plus à lui offrir que nos corps et nos champs.	18 Likewise, they came the second year, and they said to him: “We will not conceal from our lord that our money is gone; likewise our cattle are gone. Neither are you unaware that we have nothing left but our bodies and our land.
19 Devons-nous donc maintenant mourir sous tes yeux, nous et nos champs? Donne-nous du pain en échange de nos corps et de nos champs. Nous serons, nous et nos champs, les esclaves du Pharaon. Donne-nous du grain pour que nous restions en vie; sinon, nous allons mourir et nos champs retourneront en friche.”	19 Therefore, why should you watch us die? Both we and our land will be yours. Buy us into royal servitude, but provide seed, lest by the dying off of cultivators the land be reduced to a wilderness.”
20 Ainsi Joseph acquit tous les champs d’Égypte pour le compte du Pharaon, car les Égyptiens vendaient tous leurs champs, tellement la famine pesait sur eux. Tout le pays devint ainsi la propriété du Pharaon.	20 Therefore, Joseph bought all the land of Egypt, each one selling his possessions because of the magnitude of the famine. And he subjected it to Pharaoh,
21 Quant au peuple, il fut réduit en esclavage dans tout le pays d’Égypte.	21 along with all of its people, from the newest borders of Egypt, even to its furthest limits,
22 Cependant Joseph ne reprit pas aux prêtres leurs terres, car il y avait une loi du Pharaon en leur faveur, et d’après cette loi, le Pharaon devait assurer la nourriture des prêtres. C’est pourquoi ils ne vendirent pas les champs qui leur appartenaient.	22 except the land of the priests, which had been delivered to them by the king. To these also a portion of food was supplied out of the public storehouses, and, for this reason, they were not compelled to sell their possessions.
23 Joseph dit alors au peuple: “Je vous ai achetés aujourd’hui, vous et vos champs, pour le Pharaon. Voici donc du grain pour vous, vous ensemencerez vos champs.	23 Therefore, Joseph said to the people: “So, as you discern, both you and your lands are possessed by Pharaoh; take seed and sow the fields,
24 Quand viendra le temps de la récolte, vous donnerez un cinquième de cette récolte au Pharaon, et les quatre autres parts vous resteront pour ensemencer vos champs, et pour vous nourrir, vous et tous ceux de votre maison.”	24 so that you may be able to have grain. One fifth part you will give to the king; the remaining four I permit to you, as seed and as food for your families and children.
25 Ils répondirent: “Grâce à toi nous allons vivre! Puissions-nous trouver grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur: nous serons les esclaves du Pharaon!”	25 And they responded: “Our health is in your hand; only let our lord look kindly upon us, and we will serve the king with gladness.”
26 Joseph établit donc un impôt sur les champs d’Égypte et, maintenant encore, un cinquième de la récolte est remis au Pharaon. Seuls les champs des prêtres ne devinrent pas propriété du Pharaon.	26 From that time, even to the present day, in the entire land of Egypt, the fifth part is turned over to the kings, and it has become like a law, except in the land of the priests, which was free from this condition.
27 Les Israélites habitèrent en Égypte sur les terres de Gossen. Ils en prirent possession, ils s’y développèrent et se multiplièrent beaucoup.	27 And so, Israel lived in Egypt, that is, in the land of Goshen, and he possessed it. And he increased and was multiplied exceedingly.
28 Jacob vécut 17 ans en Égypte. Le total des années de Jacob fut de 147 ans.	28 And he lived in it seventeen years. And all the days of his life that passed were one hundred and forty-seven years.
29 Quand Israël sentit que sa mort était proche, il appela son fils Joseph et lui dit: “Si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, mets ta main sous ma cuisse et promets-moi de ne pas m’enterrer en Égypte, je reconnaîtrai là ta bonté et ta fidélité.	29 And when he discerned that the day of his death was approaching, he called his son Joseph, and he said to him: “If I have found favor in your sight, place your hand under my thigh. And you shall show me mercy and truth, not to bury me in Egypt.
30 Lorsque je me serai couché avec mes pères, tu m’emporteras d’Égypte et tu m’enterreras dans la tombe de mes pères.” Joseph répondit: “Je ferai ce que tu me demandes.”	30 But I shall sleep with my fathers, and you will carry me from this land and bury me in the sepulcher of my ancestors.” And Joseph answered him, “I will do what you have ordered.”
31 Israël lui dit: “Jure-le moi!” Il le lui jura, et Israël s’inclina devant lui, au chevet de son lit.	31 And he said, “Then swear it to me.” And as he was swearing, Israel adored God, turning to the head of his resting place.
