BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Come è bella la generazione casta con chiaritade! però che la sua memoria sì è immortale; per che ella sì è manifestata appo Dio e appo li uomini.	1 Better to have no children yet to have virtue, since immortality perpetuates its memory; for God andhuman beings both recognise it.
2 Quando la castità è presente, li uomini la persèguitano; e desideranla quando ella si dilunga; e in perpetuo corona?a trionfa, vincendo il merito delle battaglie di quelli che non sono contaminati (nè sozzi).	2 Present, we imitate it, absent, we long for it; crowned, it holds triumph through eternity, having strivenfor untainted prizes and emerged the victor.
3 Ma la moltitudine variata (si è di molte generazioni) de' malvagi non fia utile; e li piantoni adulterini non fanno radici alte, nè averanno stabile firmamento.	3 But the offspring of the godless come to nothing, however prolific, sprung from a bastard stock, they willnever strike deep roots, never put down firm foundations.
4 .	4 They may branch out for a time, but, on unsteady foundations, they will be rocked by the wind anduprooted by the force of the storm;
5 Fieno spezzati li rami non compiuti, e li loro frutti fieno disutili, e acerbi a mangiare; e a nulla fieno acconci.	5 their branches, yet unformed, wil be snapped off, their fruit be useless, too unripe to eat, fit for nothing.
6 Però che tutti li figliuoli che nascono de' malvagi, sì sono testimonii di malignitade contro alli padri loro, quando sono esaminati.	6 For children begotten of unlawful bed witness, when put on trial, to their parents' wickedness.
7 Ma il giusto, s'egli fia occupato dalla morte, sarae in refrigerio.	7 The upright, though he die before his time, will find rest.
8 La vecchiezza è da onorare, non computata per longhezza di tempo, nè per numero d' anni; canuti sono li sensi dell' uomo,	8 Length of days is not what makes age honourable, nor number of years the true measure of life;
9 e la etade della vecchiezza fia la vita immaculata.	9 understanding, this is grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age.
10 Colui che piace a Dio, è fatto diletto; e vivendo egli tra li peccatori è translatato.	10 Having won God's favour, he has been loved and, as he was living among sinners, has been takenaway.
11 Egli è rapito acciò che la malizia non mutasse lo intendimento suo, ovvero che loro figmenti non ingannassero l'anima sua.	11 He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or deceitfulness seduce his soul;
12 Però che lo ammaliamento delle beffe e delle derisioni oscura li beni, e la mobilitade della concupiscenza travolge il senno che è sanza malizia.	12 for the fascination of evil throws good things into the shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts asimple heart.
13 Colui che è pervenuto al fine in breve compiè molti tempi.	13 Having come to perfection so soon, he has lived long;
14 Però che l'anima sua era piaciuta a Dio; per questo affrettò (Iddio) di trarlo di mezzo le iniquitadi. Li popoli che veggiono e non intendono, che non pongono nelli loro cuori cotali cose;	14 his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has hurried away from the wickedness around him. Yet peoplelook on, uncomprehending; and it does not enter their heads
15 però che la grazia di Dio e la misericordia sua si è nelli santi suoi, e riguardamento nelli eletti suoi.	15 that grace and mercy await his chosen ones and that he intervenes on behalf of his holy ones.
16 Il giusto morto condanna li vivi rei, e la gioventù inanzi tempo consumata condanna la disensata vecchiezza (de' quali dissi sopra).	16 The upright who dies condemns the godless who survive, and youth quickly perfected condemns thelengthy old age of the wicked.
17 (Quelli popoli) vederanno la morte del savio, e non conosceranno quello che Iddio pensoe (fare) di colui, e per che Iddio l' amoe.	17 These people see the end of the wise without understanding what the Lord has in store or why he hastaken such a one to safety;
18 Elli lo vedranno, e dispregeranno; ma Iddio si farà beffe di coloro.	18 they look on and sneer, but the Lord wil laugh at them.
19 E saranno dopo queste cose caggenti sanza onore, e saranno in vituperio e in abominazione tra li morti in perpetuo; però che Iddio fiaccherae coloro enfiati sanza parole, e moveralli dalli fondamenti, e fieno desolati infino alla parte di sopra; e saranno piagnenti, e la memoria loro perirae.	19 Soon they wil be corpses without honour, objects of horror among the dead for ever. For he wilshatter them and fling them headlong and dumbfounded. He wil shake them from their foundations; they wil beutterly laid waste, a prey to grief, and their memory wil perish.
20 Li timidi verranno ne' pensieri de' suoi peccati; e le loro iniquitadi li meneranno a contrario.	20 When the count of their sins has been drawn up, in terror they wil come, and their crimes, confrontingthem, wil accuse them.
