BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Uno uomo era nella terra di Us, il quale uomo avea nome Iob; ed era questo Iob puro e diritto, temente Iddio; e molto gli dispiacea il male.	1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.
2 E nacqueli sette figliuoli, e tre figliuole.	2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
3 Il quale Iob avea l'avere suo in sette milia pecore e tre milia cammelli e cinquecento paia di buoi e cinquecento asine, e in molta e grande famiglia; e sì era quello uomo potente e ricco intra tutti quelli d' oriente.	3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.
4 (E avea sette figliuoli e tre figliuole) e ciaschedumo di questi suoi (sette) figliuoli sì facea convito, per le case loro, il suo di della settimana; e mandavano e chiamavano le loro tre sorelle, ch' elle (fossero al convito loro, e) mangiassero e bevessero con loro.	4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.
5 E conciosia cosa che nel mondo passasse il dì del convito, mandava a loro Iob, e santificava loro, e levandosi per tempo offeriva a Dio sacrificio per ciascuno. E dicea: in verità che forse peccassero i figliuoli miei, e non benedicessero Iddio nelli cuori loro. Così faceva Iob ogni dì.	5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.
6 Ma alcuno dì, conciosia cosa che venissero i figliuoli di Dio, e stessero dinanzi al Signore, fuvvi ancora fra loro Satana.	6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.
7 Al quale disse lo Signore: Satana, donde vieni? Satana rispose, e disse: hoe intorniata la terra, e andai per tutta quella.	7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'
8 E disse lo Signore a lui: or non hai tu considerato lo servo mio Iob, che non è nella terra simile a lui, uomo purissimo e dirittissimo, temendo Iddio; e partesi dal male (il quale gli dispiace)?	8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'
9 E rispose Satana al Signore, e disse: non indarno teme Iob Iddio.	9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?
10 (Dimmi Signore :) or non l' hai (tu gradito e) circondato, e la casa sua e tutta la sostanza sua, intorno intorno? E l'opera delle mani sue hai benedetto, e la possessione sua è cresciuta in terra.	10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.
11 Ma istendi uno poco la mano tua, e tocca ogni cosa ch' ello possiede, se non nella faccia; allora vederai se ti benedirà.	11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'
12 Allora disse lo Signore a Satana: ecco ogni cosa, ch' egli hae, nelle mani tue sieno; ma a lui non mettere le mani (e non lo toccare). E partissi Satana dalla faccia del Signore.	12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.
13 Conciosia cosa che alcuno die i figliuoli e le figliuole di Iob mangiassero e bevessero vino nella casa del loro fratello primogenito,	13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,
14 uno messo venne a Iob, il quale gli disse: i buoi aravano, e gli asini pascevano appresso loro.	14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,
15 E vennero li Sabei, e portàrne ogni cosa, e li guardiani uccisero con coltelli; e non n'è scampato (solamente) altro ch' io solo, acciò ch' io te l'annunciassi.	15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'
16 E conciosia cosa che ancora quello messo favellasse a Iob, venne un altro messo, e disse: lo fuoco di Dio cadde dal cielo. cadde dal cielo, e toccò le pecore e' guardiani, e arse ogni cosa; e fuggi' io solo, acciò ch' io lo t'annunciassi.	16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'
17 E favellando questo secondo messo ancora, venne un altro messo, e disse: li Caldei fecero tre turme, e assalirono li cammelli, e menaronli via, e li guardiani uccisero con coltella; e io solo scampai, per ch' io te l'annunciassi.	17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'
18 E favellante questo terzo messo, simile giunse un altro messo, ed entrò dentro a Iob, e disse: li figliuoli tuoi e le figliuole tue mangiavano insieme e beveano vino nella casa del loro fratello primogenito (con molta allegrezza, istando in canti, in suoni di chitarre e salteri; di che quello che è intervenuto io lo ti vengo ad annunciare, perchè niuno non rimase se non io proprio).	18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,
19 E (nuncioe che) repentemente uno vento grandissimo venne dalla parte del deserto, e percosse li quattro canti della casa, la quale (è ruinata e) cadde sopra i figliuoli tuoi, donde che tutti (sette i tuoi figliuoli e tre tue figliuole) sono morti; e fuggi' io solo, acciò ch' io te lo nunciassi.	19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'
20 Allora si levoe Iob, e stracciossi le vestimenta sue, e tondessi li capelli del capo, e chinossi in terra, e adorò.	20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself
21 E disse: (Signore mio) ignudo venni del ventre della mia madre; ignudo ritorneroe; lo Signore me lo diede, lo Signore se l'ha tolto; sì come al Signore piacque, così si è fatto; e sia lo nome di Dio benedetto	21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!
22 In tutte queste cose non peccò Iob colle labbra sue, e niuna cosa sciocca disse contro lo Signore; (tanta fu la sua buona volontà e mansuetudine, la quale è a noi di grande esempio nelle nostre tribulazioni, le quali Iddio ci dà per farci conoscere quello che può fare, e che noi ci conosciamo).	22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.
