1 Onde avvenne che le genti pagane, ch' erano nel paese dintorno, s' adirarono molto forte, quando intesono che il santuario e lo altare era edificato, come di prima.	1 When the Gentiles round about heard that the altar had been rebuilt and the sanctuary consecrated as before, they were very angry.
2 E pensarono di distruggere la generazione di Iacob. incominciarono a uccidere quelli del popolo (Giudeo), e perseguitarli.	2 So they decided to destroy the descendants of Jacob who were among them, and they began to massacre and persecute the people.
3 Ma Giuda incominciò a sconfiggere li figliuoli di Esaù in Idumea, e quelli ch' erano in Acrabatane, perciò che molestavano i figliuoli d' Israel; e sì gli percosse con loro grave danno.	3 Then Judas attacked the sons of Esau at Akrabattene in Idumea, because they were blockading Israel; he defeated them heavily, overcame and despoiled them.
4 E ricordossi della malizia de' figliuoli di Bean, i quali erano al popolo suo scandalo e lacciuolo, appostandogli nella via.	4 He also remembered the malice of the sons of Baean, who had become a snare and a stumbling block to the people by ambushing them along the roads.
5 E rinchiuseli nelle loro torri (con quelli che v'erano dentro), e assediògli, e maledissegli (e perseguigli e presegli), e le loro torri arse, e tutti quegli che v'erano dentro.	5 He forced them to take refuge in towers, which he besieged; he vowed their annihilation and burned down the towers along with all the persons in them.
6 E poi passòe alli figliuoli di Ammon, e quivi trovò grande potenza e molto popolo, e Timoteo il quale era loro duca.	6 Then he crossed over to the Ammonites, where he found a strong army and a large body of people with Timothy as their leader.
7 E fece con loro molte battaglie, e furono vinti da lui e dalla sua gente, isconfiggendoli.	7 He fought many battles with them, routed them, and struck them down.
8 E prese la città di Gazer e tutta sua gente, e poi si ritornoe in Giudea.	8 After seizing Jazer and its villages, he returned to Judea.
9 E trovò che s'erano radunate le genti di Galaad contro a quegli d' Israel, i quali confinavano con loro, per distruggerli (e disertargli; e aveano già fatto loro grande danno nelle contrade loro, d' uccidere gente e menare prigioni); e loro s' erano fuggiti nella fortezza di Dateman (ed eransi guarniti).	9 The Gentiles in Gilead assembled to attack and destroy the Israelites who were in their territory; these then fled to the stronghold of Dathema.
10 Di che loro aveano mandate lettere a Giuda e alli suoi fratelli, dicendo: (sappiate che) sono radunate le genti dintorno per essere contro a noi.	10 They sent a letter to Judas and his brothers saying: "The Gentiles around us have combined against us to destroy us,
11 E apparecchiansi di venire (a distruggere e) a prendere la fortezza ove noi siamo rifuggiti; e (venuto è a loro) Timoteo (ed) è duca della loro oste.	11 and they are preparing to come and seize this stronghold to which we have fled. Timothy is the leader of their army.
12 Dunque venite a liberarci delle mani loro; imperciò che moltitudine di noi sì è già venuta meno.	12 Come at once and rescue us from them, for many of us have fallen.
13 E li nostri fratelli, i quali erano per le contrade in ogni lato, sono uccisi; e le loro donne e figliuoli sono menati prigioni, e rubate le loro case; e appresso che mille uomini sono periti.	13 All our kinsmen who were among the Tobiads have been killed; the Gentiles have carried away their wives and children and their goods, and they have slain there about a thousand men."
14 E mentre che queste lettere si leggevano, sopragiunsono altri messi di Galilea con vestimenti squarciati, dicendo quasi somiglianti novelle:	14 While they were reading this letter, suddenly other messengers, in torn clothes, arrived from Galilee to deliver a similar message:
15 che contro a loro s'erano levati quelli di Tolemaide e di Tiro e di Sidone; e tutta Galilea sì era ripiena di forestieri, per disertarli.	15 that the inhabitants of Ptolemais, Tyre, and Sidon, and the whole of Gentile Galilee had joined forces to destroy them.
16 E quando Giuda e l'altro popolo udirono queste novelle, radunarono quelli della chiesa de' fedeli per provvedere a' loro prossimi, i quali erano nelle tribulazioni ed erano combattuti.	16 When Judas and the people heard this, a great assembly convened to consider what they should do for their unfortunate kinsmen who were being attacked by enemies.
17 E disse Giuda a suo fratello Simone: eleggi a te compagni, e vae a liberare i tuoi fratelli in Galilea; e io e lo mio fratello Ionata andaremo in Galaaditim.	17 Judas said to his brother Simon: "Choose men for yourself, and go, rescue your kinsmen in Galilee; I and my brother Jonathan will go to Gilead."
18 E lasciò principe del popolo Iosefo, figliuolo di Zaccaria, e Azaria, duchi del popolo, collo rimanente (del popolo e) dell' oste per guardare.	18 In Judea he left Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, leader of the people, with the rest of the army to guard it.
19 E comandò loro, dicendo: siate preposti al popolo, e non siate arditi di fare battaglia contro alle genti, d' infino alla nostra tornata.	19 "Take charge of these people," he commanded them, "but do not fight against the Gentiles until we return."
20 A Simone furono dati tre milia uomini, per andare in Galilea; e a Giuda ne furono dati otto milia per andare in Galaaditim.	20 Three thousand men were allotted to Simon, to go into Galilee, and eight thousand men to Judas, for Gilead.
21 E andò Simone in Galilea, e fece molte battaglie colle genti istrane; e sconfissele, e fuggirono dinanzi da lui, ed egli li perseguitòe insino alla porta di Tolemaide.	21 Simon went into Galilee and fought many battles with the Gentiles. They were crushed before him,
22 E furono de' nemici, tra morti e persi, quasi nel torno di tre mila uomini; e tolse loro le spoglie (e gli arnesi).	22 and he pursued them to the very gate of Ptolemais. About three thousand men of the Gentiles fell, and he gathered their spoils.
23 E raccolse la sua gente ch' era in Galilea e in Arbati, e menogliene in Giudea insieme colle loro mogli e figliuoli, e con tutte le cose, con grande letizia.	23 He took with him the Jews who were in Galilee and in Arbatta, with their wives and children and all that they had, and brought them to Judea with great rejoicing.
24 Ma Giuda Maccabeo e Ionata suo fratello passarono il (fiume) Giordano, e andarono tre giornate per lo deserto.	24 Judas Maccabeus and his brother Jonathan crossed the Jordan and marched for three days through the desert.
25 E venneno loro incontro li Nabutei, i quali li ricevettono (allegramente) con pace; e dissono ciò ch' era avvenuto a' loro fratelli in Galaad;	25 There they met some Nabateans, who received them peacefully and told them all that had happened to the Jews in Gilead:
26 e che molti di loro ne sono presi in Barasa e in Bosor e in Alimi e in Casfor e in Maget e in Carnaim; tutte queste erano cittadi grandi e afforzate.	26 "Many of them have been imprisoned in Bozrah, in Bosor near Alema, in Chaspho, Maked, and Carnaim"--all of these are large, fortified cities--
27 Ancora per tutte le cittadi di Galaad sono tenuti in prigione; e domani hanno ordinato di giugnere con l'oste in queste cittadi, e di prendere loro e consumargli in uno dì.	27 "and some have been imprisoned in other cities of Gilead. Tomorrow their enemies plan to attack the strongholds and to seize and destroy all these people in one day."
28 Allora Giuda e la sua oste volse la via per lo diserto di Bosor, e subitamente prese la cittade; e uccise tutti i maschi, e miseli alle spade, e tolse tutto il loro aruese, e poi vi mise dentro fuoco e arsela (cittade).	28 Thereupon Judas suddenly changed direction with his army, marched across the desert to Bozrah, and captured the city. He slaughtered all the male population, took all their possessions, and set fire to the city.
29 E dindi si levarono di notte, e andarono insino alla fortezza (loro).	29 He led his army from that place by night, and they marched toward the stronghold of Dathema.
30 E la mattina per tempo, ragguardando di lungi, viddono venire molto popolo sanza numero, i quali aveano iscale e ingegni per pigliare la tenuta e per combattergli, (e già erano alle mani con quelli della contrada e delle cittadi).	30 When morning came, they looked ahead and saw a countless multitude of people, with ladders and devices for capturing the stronghold, and beginning to attack the people within.
31 E quando Giuda vidde che la battaglia era incominciata, e che le grida de' combattitori si levava infino al cielo sì come trombe, e grande rumore di cittadini;	31 When Judas perceived that the struggle had begun and that the noise of the battle was resounding to heaven with trumpet blasts and loud shouting,
32 egli disse a sua gente: oggi fate che voi combattiate (valentemente) per li vostri fratelli.	32 he said to the men of his army, "Fight for our kinsmen today."
33 E venne per tre ordini dopo loro, e sonarono le trombe, e gridarono (davanti loro) con orazione.	33 He came up behind them with three columns blowing their trumpets and shouting in prayer.
34 E quando l'oste di Timoteo conobbe che egli era il Maccabeo, fuggirono dinanzi da lui; dond' egli fece loro grande plaga, e furono morti e presi di loro presso a ottomilia uomini.	34 When the army of Timothy realized that it was Maccabeus, they fell back before him, and he inflicted on them a crushing defeat. About eight thousand of their men fell that day.
35 E venne Giuda in Masfa, e combatteronla e presonla, e uccisono tutti i maschi della terra; e rubòe tutte le sue spoglie, e poi la mise a fuoco e a fiamma.	35 Then he turned toward Alema and attacked and captured it; he killed all the male population, plundered the place, and burned it down.
36 E quindi si partì, e prese Casbon e Maget e Bosor e l'altre cittadi di Galaad.	36 From there he moved on and took Chaspho, Maked, Bosor, and the other cities of Gilead.
37 E dopo queste cose ancora Timoteo radunò un' altra oste, e puose il campo contro a Rafon di là dal torrente.	37 After these events Timothy assembled another army and camped opposite Raphon, on the other side of the stream.
38 Allora Giuda sì vi mandò ispie, che ispiassono le condizioni dell' oste; e apportarongli, che tutte le vicine genti, ch' erano d'intorno in quelle contrade, s' erano radunate con Timoteo, donde la sua sì era una grande oste;	38 Judas sent men to spy on the camp, and they reported to him: "All the Gentiles around us have rallied to him, making a very large force;
39 e ch' egli avea condotto gli Arabi nel suo aiuto, e ch' egli avea posto il campo di là dal torrente, ed erano apparecchiati di venire contro a lui a battaglia. Allora (si mosse) Giuda, (e) andò contro a loro.	39 they have also hired Arabs to help them, and have camped beyond the stream, ready to attack you." So Judas went forward to attack them.
40 E (quando) Timoteo (il seppe,) disse alli prìncipi della sua oste: quando Giuda s' appresserà colla sua oste, e giugneràe al torrente dell' acqua, s'egli passeràe il fiume prima di noi, non gli potremo sostenere, imperciò ch' egli è possente, e potrà più di noi.	40 As Judas and his army were approaching the running stream, Timothy said to the officers of his army: "If he crosses over to us first, we shall not be able to resist him; he will certainly defeat us.
41 Ma s' egli averà paura di passare il fiume e porrà il campo di là dal fiume, passiamo allora noi, e potremo contro a lui.	41 But if he is afraid and camps on the other side of the river, we will cross over to him and defeat him."
42 Ma si tosto come Giuda s' appressòe al torrente dell' acqua, ordinò che gli scribi del popolo stessono a lato al fiume, e comandò loro che non lasciassono alcuno di quà dal fiume, ma tutti passassono, e venissono alla battaglia.	42 But when Judas reached the running stream, he stationed the officers of the people beside the stream and gave them this order: "Do not allow any man to pitch a tent; all must go into battle."
43 Ed egli in prima (dinanzi da tutti) passòe l'acqua, e tutto il popolo dopo lui; onde tutte le genti (strane e nemiche) furono impaurite, (e fuggirono dinanzi da loro,) e gittarono l' armi loro, e fuggirono al tempio il quale è in Carnaim.	43 He was the first to cross to the attack, with all the people behind him, and the Gentiles were crushed before them; they threw away their arms and fled to the temple enclosure at Carnaim.
44 E Giuda gli prese, e gittòe il fuoco in tutta la cittade, e ancora il tempio mise a fuoco e a fiamma con tutti quelli che v'erano dentro; e così fue abbattuta la cittade di Carnaim, e non si potè tenere dinanzi da Giuda.	44 The Jews captured that city and burnt the enclosure with all who were in it. So Carnaim was subdued, and Judas met with no more resistance.
45 Allora Giuda radunò tutti quegli del suo popolo d' Israel, i quali erano in Galaad, dal più piccolo infino al maggiore, e le loro donne e i loro figliuoli; e con la sua grande oste sì si mosse per venire nella terra di Giuda.	45 Then he assembled all the Israelites, great and small, who were in Gilead, with their wives and children and their goods, a great crowd of people, to go into the land of Judah.
46 E vennero infino ad Efron; e questa è città grande, ed è posta all' entrare (delle terre di Giuda); ed era molto forte e armata; e non vi si poteva andare nè a destra nè a sinistra, ma per lo mezzo della terra era il cammino.	46 When they reached Ephron, a large and strongly fortified city along the way, they found it impossible to encircle it on either the right or the left; they would have to march right through it.
47 E quegli ch' erano della cittade si rinchiusono dentro, e murarono le porte con pietre allora Giuda mandò loro,	47 But the men in the city shut them out and blocked up the gates with stones.
48 dicendo pacificamente, che piacesse loro di lasciargli passare a piede senza nocimento a persona, acciò che potessono tornare nella loro terra. E loro non gli volsono lasciare passare.	48 Then Judas sent them this peaceful message: "We wish to cross your territory in order to reach our own; no one will harm you; we will only march through." But they would not open to him.
49 Allora comandò Giuda, che ciascuno come egli era quivi nel campo, quindi combattesse, e che si accostassono alla cittade.	49 So Judas ordered a proclamation to be made in the camp that everyone make an attack from the place where he was.
50 Così gli uomini della virtude diedono la battaglia tutto die e tutta notte; onde la cittade fu data nelle sue mani.	50 When the men of the army took up their positions, he assaulted the city all that day and night, and it was delivered to him.
51 E uccisono e misono alle spade tutti i maschi; e distrusse la cittade infino a' fondamenti, e prese le sue spoglie, e passarono per tutta la cittade sopra i morti.	51 He slaughtered every male, razed and plundered the city, and passed through it over the slain.
52 E poi passarono il fiume Giordano, e vennono nel grande campo contro alla faccia di Betsan.	52 Then they crossed the Jordan to the great plain in front of Beth-shan;
53 E Giuda continuamente raccoglieva i suoi insino a quegli di dietro, e tutto il popolo confortava per tutta la via, infino che loro giunsono nella terra giudaica.	53 and Judas kept rounding up the stragglers and encouraging the people the whole way, until he reached the land of Judah.
54 E salirono nel monte di Sion con letizia e con grande gioia; e offersono ostie, conciofosse cosa che alcuno di loro non fosse (mancato nè) venuto meno insino alla loro tornata.	54 They ascended Mount Zion in joy and gladness and offered holocausts, because not one of them had fallen; they had returned in safety.
55 In quel tempo che Giuda e Ionata erano nella terra di Galaad, e Simone loro fratello era in Galilea contro alla faccia di Tolemaide,	55 During the time that Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Gilead, and Simon his brother was in Galilee opposite Ptolemais,
56 Iosefo, figliuolo di Zaccaria, e Azaria principe della virtude, ndirono dire le cose le quali erano state fatte, e le battaglie ch' erano state commesse.	56 Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, the leaders of the army, heard about the brave deeds and the fighting that they were doing.
57 Ond' egli dissono: facciamo simigliantemente a noi nome, e (acquistiamo a noi gloria e onore) andiamo a combattere cogli nimici che ci sono dintorno.	57 They said, "Let us also make a name for ourselves by going out and fighting against the Gentiles around us."
58 E comandarono a quegli della loro oste, (che gli seguissono), e andàronsene in Iamnia.	58 They gave orders to the men of their army who were with them, and marched toward Jamnia.
59 Allora Gorgia e la sua gente uscirono loro incontro della loro cittade a battaglia.	59 But Gorgias and his men came out of the city to meet them in battle.
60 E furono cacciati Iosefo e Azaria infino alli confini de' Giudei; di che furono sconfitti in quel dì intorno di due milia uomini del popolo d' Israel, e così fu fatto grande plaga del detto popolo;	60 Joseph and Azariah were beaten, and were pursued to the frontiers of Judea, and about two thousand Israelites fell that day.
61 perchè loro non ubbidirono Giuda e gli suoi fratelli, avendo istimato loro fortemente di combattere e vincere.	61 It was a bad defeat for the people, because they had not obeyed Judas and his brothers, thinking that they would do brave deeds.
62 Ma veramente loro non erano del lignaggio di quegli uomini, per li quali s' acquistò salute nel popolo d'Israel.	62 But they did not belong to the family of those men to whom it was granted to achieve Israel's salvation.
63 Egli avvenne che la gente di Giuda fu laudata molto nel conspetto del popolo [d' Israel], e di tutte le genti, dove si ragionava di loro nome.	63 The valiant Judas and his brothers were greatly renowned in all Israel and among all the Gentiles, wherever their name was heard;
64 .	64 and men gathered about them and praised them.
65 E Giuda e li suoi fratelli uscirono fuori, e combattevano contro agli discendenti di Esaù nella terra ch' è dalla parte d' austro; e percosse Chebron e le sue figliuole; e mise al fuoco le sue mura e le torri d' intorno.	65 Then Judas and his brothers went out and attacked the sons of Esau in the country toward the south; he took Hebron and its villages, and he destroyed its strongholds and burned the towers around it.
66 E mosse il campo per andare nelle terre strane, e campeggiava Samaria.	66 He then set out for the land of the Philistines and passed through Marisa.
67 E in quel dì caddono i sacerdoti nella battaglia, volendo fortemente operare, e sanza consiglio andare alla battaglia.	67 At that time some priests fell in battle who had gone out rashly to fight in their desire to distinguish themselves.
68 E andò Giuda in Azoto nella terra degli strani, e distrusse i loro altari; e gli ornamenti delli loro iddii mise al fuoco; e prese le ricchezze delle cittadi, e tornossi nella terra Giudaica.	68 Judas then turned toward Azotus in the land of the Philistines. He destroyed their altars and burned the statues of their gods; and after plundering their cities he returned to the land of Judah.
