1 E quando ebbe udito Ietro prete di Madian, cognato di Moise, ogni cosa che avea fatta lo Signore a Moisè e ad Israel suo popolo, però ch' egli avea tratto Israel d'Egitto;	1 Now Moses' father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for his people Israel: how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.
2 tolse Sefora moglie di Moisè, la quale avea rimandato,	2 So his father-in-law Jethro took along Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent back to him,
3 e due suoi figliuoli, de' quali l'uno si chiamava Gersam, dicendo lo padre: FORESTIERE FUI NELLA TERRA ALTRUI,	3 and her two sons. One of these was called Gershom; for he said, "I am a stranger in a foreign land."
4 e l'altro era chiamato Eliezer; disse in verità: IDDIO DEL PADRE MIO AIUTÒ ME, E SCAMPÒ ME DAL COLTELLO DI FARAONE.	4 The other was called Eliezer; for he said, "My father's God is my helper; he has rescued me from Pharaoh's sword."
5 Venne adunque Ietro, cognato di Moisè, e li figliuoli suoi e la moglie sua a Moisè nel deserto, dove s'era incastellato appresso lo monte di Dio.	5 Together with Moses' wife and sons, then, his father-in-law Jethro came to him in the desert where he was encamped near the mountain of God,
6 E mandò a Moisè dicendo: io, cognato tuo Ietro, vengo a te, e la moglie tua, e due tuoi figliuoli con lei.	6 and he sent word to Moses, "I, Jethro, your father-in-law, am coming to you, along with your wife and her two sons."
7 Il quale venuto incontro al cognato suo, adorollo e basciò lui; e salutaronsi insieme con parole pacifiche. E quando entroe nel tabernacolo,	7 Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down before him, and kissed him. Having greeted each other, they went into the tent.
8 narrò Moisè al cognato suo tutte quelle cose, che fece lo Signore (a Moisè, ed) a Faraone e a quegli d'Egitto per Israel, e tutta la fatica ch' era incontrata loro nello andare, e come liberò loro lo Signore.	8 Moses then told his father-in-law of all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for the sake of Israel, and of all the hardships they had had to endure on their journey, and how the LORD had come to their rescue.
9 E rallegrossi Ietro sopra tutti li beni li quali avea fatti lo Signore ad Israel; perciò che avea iscampato lui lo Signore della mano di quelli di Egitto (e della mano di Faraone).	9 Jethro rejoiced over all the goodness that the LORD had shown Israel in rescuing them from the hands of the Egyptians.
10 E disse: benedetto lo Signore, che liberò voi della mano di quelli d'Egitto e della mano di Faraone; il quale iscampò lo popolo suo della mano di quelli d'Egitto.	10 "Blessed be the LORD," he said, "who has rescued his people from the hands of Pharaoh and the Egyptians.
11 Ora io conosco che grande è lo Signore sopra tutti gli dii, perciò che magnamente ha fatto contra coloro di Egitto (per prego di Moisè).	11 Now I know that the LORD is a deity great beyond any other; for he took occasion of their being dealt with insolently to deliver the people from the power of the Egyptians."
12 Offerse adunque letro, cognato di Moisè, li sacrificii e l'ostie a Dio; e vennero (Moisè ed) Aaron e tutti li più vecchi d'Israel, acciò che mangiassero del pane con lui innanzi al Signore.	12 Then Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, brought a holocaust and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to participate with Moses' father-in-law in the meal before God.
13 Ma l'altro dì sedè Moisè, acciò che giudi casse al popolo, il quale istava presente a Moisè dalla mattina insino al vespro.	13 The next day Moses sat in judgment for the people, who waited about him from morning until evening.
14 La quale cosa quando vidde letro suo cognato, tutte le cose cioè che facea nel popolo, disse: che è questo che tu fai nel popolo? perchè solo siedi, e tutto lo popolo t'aspetta dalla mattina insino al vespro?	14 When his father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he inquired, "What sort of thing is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone while all the people have to stand about you from morning till evening?"
15 Al quale rispose Moisè; venne a me lo popolo, addomandando la sentenza di Dio.	15 Moses answered his father-in-law, "The people come to me to consult God.
16 E quando incontra loro alcuna (discordia, ovver discettazione), vengono a me, acciò ch' io giudichi intra loro, e mostri li comandamenti di Dio e le leggi sue.	16 Whenever they have a disagreement, they come to me to have me settle the matter between them and make known to them God's decisions and regulations."
17 E quelli disse: tu non fai buona cosa.	17 "You are not acting wisely," his father-in-law replied.
18 Conciosia cosa che per fatica ti consumerai tu, e questo popolo il quale è teco; oltre le forze tue è questa cosa; solo non potresti sostenere.	18 "You will surely wear yourself out, and not only yourself but also these people with you. The task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.
19 Ma odi le parole mie e li consigli, e sarae lo Signore teco: fa che tu sia sopra il popolo in quelle cose che al Signore s'appartengono, acciò che tu rapporti quelle cose che sono dette da Dio;	19 Now, listen to me, and I will give you some advice, that God may be with you. Act as the people's representative before God, bringing to him whatever they have to say.
20 e mostri al popolo le cerimonie e lo rito (cioè modo) di adorare, e la via per la quale andare debbano, e le opere che debbano fare.	20 Enlighten them in regard to the decisions and regulations, showing them how they are to live and what they are to do.
21 Ma provedi di ogni schiatta uomini potenti e tementi Iddio, nelli quali sia verità, e che abbiano in odio l'avarizia; e ordina di loro li tribuni, li centurioni e li quinquagenarii e li decani;	21 But you should also look among all the people for able and God-fearing men, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain, and set them as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.
22 li quali giudichino lo popolo in ogni tempo; e qualunque cosa sarà maggiore, riportinla a te; e loro le cose minori giudichin solamente: più lieve sarà a te, partito lo carico in altri.	22 Let these men render decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. More important cases they should refer to you, but all the lesser cases they can settle themselves. Thus, your burden will be lightened, since they will bear it with you.
23 Se questo farai, tu empirai ogni comandamento di Dio; e li comandamenti di Dio potrai sostenere; e tutto questo popolo sì ritornerà ai luoghi suoi con pace.	23 If you do this, when God gives you orders you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied."
24 Le quali cose udite, Moisè fece ogni cosa che colui gli avea detto.	24 Moses followed the advice of his father-in-law and did all that he had suggested.
25 Ed eletti gli uomini più savii e migliori di tutto Israel, fece loro principi del popolo, tribuni e centurioni e quinquagenarii e decani.	25 He picked out able men from all Israel and put them in charge of the people as officers over groups of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.
26 Li quali giudicassero lo popolo in ogni tempo; ma qualunque cosa era più grave, sì la porgevano a lui; solamente le cose più agevoli giudicavano.	26 They rendered decisions for the people in all ordinary cases. The more difficult cases they referred to Moses, but all the lesser cases they settled themselves.
27 E lasciò lo cognato suo; il quale, ritornato, andò nella terra sua.	27 Then Moses bade farewell to his father-in-law, who went off to his own country.
