1 Nel tempo di Assuero, il quale regnò dall'India insino all' Etiopia in cento ventisette provincie;	1 During the reign of Ahasuerus-this was the Ahasuerus who ruled over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia-
2 (ed essendo eletto in questa signoria) e signoreggiando ordinò la corte sua nella città di Susa, la qual fu principio del suo regno;	2 while he was occupying the royal throne in the stronghold of Susa,
3 nel terzo anno della sua signoria (ordinò e) fece uno grandissimo convito a tutti i principi e a' suoi servi e a tutti i fortissimi di Persia e a tutti i nobili di Media e a tutti i governatori delle provincie dinanzi a sè.	3 in the third year of his reign, he presided over a feast for all his officers and ministers: the Persian and Median aristocracy, the nobles, and the governors of the provinces.
4 E questo fece per dimostrare la sua grande magnificenza e ricchezza e lo fasto della sua potenza; e durò questa corte cento ottanta giorni.	4 For as many as a hundred and eighty days, he displayed the glorious riches of his kingdom and the resplendent wealth of his royal estate.
5 E quando furono questi giorni del convito compiuti, egli fece invitare tutta la gente che si trovò in Susa (cioè nella città) dal maggiore insino al minore; e nel portico del suo giardino e bosco, lo quale era (piantato e) seminato a mano secondo lo modo de' giardini regali, fece per sette giorni apparecchiare,	5 At the end of this time the king gave a feast of seven days in the garden court of the royal palace for all the people, great and small, who were in the stronghold of Susa.
6 e coprire da ogni parte di drappi a oro e a seta azzurra e cremesina; e le funi, che stavano per sostenere questi drappi, tutte erano dì seta bianca e cremesina, le quali [erano] poste di dentro anelli di avorio. Le colonne erano di marmo (ed erano attorniate di panni); li letti tutti erano d' oro e di ariento, ordinati sopra il pavimento seliciato di pietra verde e di marmo di Pario bianchissimo; lo qual ornava la pittura di una maravigliosa varietà.	6 There were white cotton draperies and violet hangings, held by cords of crimson byssus from silver rings on marble pillars. Gold and silver couches were on the pavement, which was of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and colored stones.
7 E le vasa, le quali s' adoperavano per bere nella corte, tutte erano d'oro; e i cibi erano posti in altri diversi vasi; (e niuna cosa era la quale fosse in questo convito, che fosse meno cioè che al convito bisogno fosse). E il vino era, tale come alla magnificenza regia si convenia, in abbondanza e buono sempre (invitando di bere di diversi e buoni vini).	7 Liquor was served in a variety of golden cups, and the royal wine flowed freely, as befitted the king's munificence.
8 E non era chi sforzasse quelli che non voleano bere; e ordinò il re che ciascuno de' suoi prìncipi, li quali erano ordinati sopra ciascuna mensa, lasciasse prendere tutto quello che piacesse loro.	8 By ordinance of the king the drinking was unstinted, for he had instructed all the stewards of his household to comply with the good pleasure of everyone.
9 E la regina, la quale avea nome Vasti, fece il convito alle donne nel palazzo (del re, cioè in quello) che il re solea abitare.	9 Queen Vashti also gave a feast for the women inside the royal palace of King Ahasuerus.
10 E nel settimo giorno, essendo il re allegro, e dal vino riscaldato per aver bevuto troppo, comandò a Maumam e a Bazata e ad Arbona e a Bagata e ad Abgata e a Zetar e a Carcas, sette eunuchi i quali erano ministratori del re,	10 On the seventh day, when the king was merry with wine, he instructed Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who attended King Ahasuerus,
11 che loro dovessono menare la regina Vasti al re, (adornata di tutte vestimenta regali e) posta la corona sopra il capo suo, acciò che si vedesse da tutti li principi, e da tutta gente, la sua bellezza; la quale era molto bella.	11 to bring Queen Vashti into his presence wearing the royal crown, that he might display her beauty to the populace and the officials, for she was lovely to behold.
12 E udendo la regina l'ambasciata del re da questi eunuchi, rinunciolla e non vi volse andare. Onde per questa renunciazione il re si adirò in molto furore.	12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the royal order issued through the eunuchs. At this the king's wrath flared up, and he burned with fury.
13 E domandò a' savii, i quali sempre consigliavano il re, e al loro consiglio s' attenea; perciò ch' erano savii e ammaestrati della legge;	13 He conferred with the wise men versed in the law, because the king's business was conducted in general consultation with lawyers and jurists.
14 e costoro erano i primi e più prossimi : Carsena, Setar, Admata e Tarsis, Mares e Marsana e Mamuca, sette duchi del popolo di Persia e di Media, i quali (sempre) istavano nel cospetto del re, ed erano dopo il re i primi nello reame;	14 He summoned Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memucan, the seven Persian and Median officials who were in the king's personal service and held first rank in the realm,
15 che sentenza davano della regina Vasti, la quale non volle obbedire il comandamento del re, lo quale mandò comandando per sette eunuchi suoi.	15 and asked them, "What is to be done by law with Queen Vashti for disobeying the order of King Ahasuerus issued through the eunuchs?"
16 Allora rispose Mamuca (uno de' savii) in presenza del re e degli altri savii, e disse: la regina Vasti non ha offeso solamente il re, ma ella hae offeso tutti quanti i principi, e tutto il popolo il quale è sotto la signoria del re Assuero.	16 In the presence of the king and of the officials, Memucan answered: "Queen Vashti has not wronged the king alone, but all the officials and the populace throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus.
17 E (che) questo che ha fatto la regina sarà manifesto a tutte le donne, e (che) l'altre donne non faranno la volontà de' loro mariti; anzi diranno: poi che la regina si ribella dal re, bene ci possiamo ribellare noi da' nostri mariti;	17 For the queen's conduct will become known to all the women, and they will look with disdain upon their husbands when it is reported, "King Ahasuerus commanded that Queen Vashti be ushered into his presence, but she would not come.'
18 sì che per questo esempio tutte le donne [de' principi] di Persia e di Media si faranno beffe de' loro mariti; onde se il re n'è turbato, egli n' ha grande ragione	18 This very day the Persian and Median ladies who hear of the queen's conduct will rebel against all the royal officials, with corresponding disdain and rancor.
19 E per ciò se [ti] piace, alla tua presenza fa uno comandamento, sì che sia manifesto in Persia e in Media, che giammai la regina Vasti non venga uella presenza del re; ma tròvisene un' altra che succeda nel regno, che sia migliore (e più obbediente).	19 If it please the king, let an irrevocable royal decree be issued by him and inscribed among the laws of the Persians and Medes, forbidding Vashti to come into the presence of King Ahasuerus and authorizing the king to give her royal dignity to one more worthy than she.
20 E questo sia manifesto in tutto il tuo imperio per tutte le tue provincie, sì che niuna maritata, così delli maggiori come delli minori, (si debba nè) si ribelli giammai al suo marito.	20 Thus, when the decree which the king will issue is published throughout his realm, vast as it is, all wives will honor their husbands, from the greatest to the least."
21 Piacque il detto di questo savio al re et agli altri savii.	21 This proposal found acceptance with the king and the officials, and the king acted on the advice of Memucan.
22 E incontanente fece scrivere lettere a tutte le provincie del suo reame, che dovessero manifestare e leggere la sentenza detta di sopra.	22 He sent letters to all the royal provinces, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, to the effect that every man should be lord in his own home.
