1 Ed erano in Samaria settanta figliuoli di Acab. Onde scrisse Ieu lettere in Samaria a' maggiori della città, e a quegli che erano maggiori per nascimento, e ai baili di Acab, dicendo:	1 There were seventy of Ahab's sons in Samaria. Jehu sent to Samaria, to the authorities of the city, tothe elders and to the guardians of Ahab's children. He said,
2 Incontanente che voi avrete queste lettere, voi che avete figliuoli del vostro signore, e carri e cavalli, e le città ferme e l'arme,	2 'Now, when this letter reaches you, you have your master's sons with you; you also have chariots andhorses, a fortified city and weapons.
3 eleggete il migliore, e quello che più vi piace de' figliuoli del vostro signore, e ponetelo nella sedia del suo padre, e combattete per la casa del vostro signore.	3 See which of your master's sons is the best and worthiest, put him on his father's throne and fight for your master's dynasty!'
4 E coloro temerono molto forte, e disseno: ecco che due re non poterono istare dinanzi a lui; e come gli potremo resistere noi?	4 They were utterly terrified. 'We have seen how the two kings could not stand up to him,' they said, 'sohow could we?'
5 Onde ch' egli mandarono i prefetti della casa, e' prefetti della città, e' maggiori per nazione e' nutricii a Ieu, dicendo: noi siamo tuoi [servi], e faremo ciò che tu ci comanderai, e non faremo re; fa tu ciò che ti piace.	5 Consequently the master of the palace, the governor of the city, the elders and the guardians sentword to Jehu, 'We are your servants. We shal do whatever you order us. We shall not proclaim a king; act asyou think best.'
6 E il re scrisse lettere la seconda volta, dicendo: se voi siete miei, e ubbedite a me, tollete le teste de' figliuoli del vostro signore, e venite a me domane in quest' ora medesima in Iezrael. E i figliuoli del re, settanta uomini, sì governavano i più maggiori della città.	6 Jehu then wrote them a second letter. He said, 'If you are for me and if you are prepared to acceptorders from me, take the heads of the men of your master's family and come to me at Jezreel by this timetomorrow.' (There were seventy of Ahab's sons being educated there by the leading men of the city.)
7 E venute le lettere a loro, tolsero i figliuoli del re, e uccisergli, settanta uomini; e le teste loro puosero in isporte, e mandaronle in Iezrael a Ieu.	7 When this letter reached them, they took the king's sons and butchered al seventy of them, put theirheads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.
8 E venne il messo a lui, e nunciogli dicendo: egli hanno portate le teste de' figliuoli del re. Ed egli disse ponetele nell' entrata della porta, e fatene due monti, insino a domattina.	8 The messenger came and told Jehu, 'They have brought the heads of the king's sons.' 'Leave them intwo heaps at the entrance to the gate until morning,' he replied.
9 E fatto il dì, uscìo fuori, e disse a tutto il popolo voi siete giusti; se io feci congiurazione contro al mio signore, e uccisilo, or questi chi ha morti?	9 When morning came, he went out and, standing, said to all the people, 'No guilt attaches to you! I didindeed plot against my master and have kil ed him; but what about al these? Who struck them?
10 Or vedete adunque, che di tutte le parole del Signore non è caduta niuna in terra, le quali il Signore disse sopra la casa di Acab; e ha fatto il Signore quello disse per la mano del suo servo Elia.	10 Know, then, that nothing will fail to be fulfil ed of the prophecy uttered by Yahweh against the Houseof Ahab; Yahweh has done what he said through his servant Elijah.'
11 E uccise Ieu tutti quegli ch' erano rimasi della casa di Acab in Iezrael, e tutti li nobili suoi, conoscenti e sacerdoti, tanto che di lui non rimase reliquie.	11 Jehu then kil ed every member of the House of Ahab surviving in Jezreel, all his leading men, hisclose friends, his priests; he did not leave a single one alive.
12 E levossi, e andonne in Samaria: e venuto alla camera de' pastori nella via,	12 Jehu then set out for Samaria. As he was on his way, at Beth-Eked of the Shepherds,
13 trovò li fratelli di Ocozia re di Giuda, e disse loro chi siete voi? E quegli respuoseno: noi siamo fratelli di Ocozia, e andiamo a salutare i figliuoli del re e li figliuoli della regina.	13 he met the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah. 'Who are you?' he asked. 'We are Ahaziah's brothers,'they replied, 'and we are on our way to pay our respects to the king's sons and the queen mother's sons.'
14 Il quale disse: pigliateli vivi. I quali avendoli pigliati vivi, gli scannò nella cisterna presso alla camera; ed erano quarantadue uomini, e non lasciò di loro nulla.	14 'Take them alive,' he said. They took them alive, and he slaughtered them at the storage-wel of Beth-Eked, forty-two of them; he did not spare a single one.
15 E partitosi indi, trovò Ionadab figliuolo di Recab, che venia rincontro a lui; e benedisselo, e disse è egli diritto il tuo cuore meco, così come il cuor mio è col tuo? E disse Ionadab: egli è così. [E disse]: s' egli è così, dammi la tua maao. Il quale gli diede la sua mano. E quegli il levò suso nel carro suo.	15 Leaving there, he came on Jehonadab son of Rechab who was on his way to meet him. He greetedhim and said, 'Is your heart true to mine, as my heart is to yours?' Jehonadab replied, 'Yes.' 'If so,' Jehu said,'give me your hand.' Jehonadab gave him his hand, and Jehu took him up beside him in his chariot.
16 E disse a lui: vieni meco, e vedi il mio zelo per lo Signore. E postolo nel suo carro,	16 'Come with me,' he said, 'and witness my zeal for Yahweh,' and took him along in his chariot.
17 menollo in Samaria. E uccise tutti quelli ch' erano rimasi di Acab in Samaria insino ad uno, secondo la parola di Dio, la quale avea detta per Elia.	17 When he entered Samaria, he kil ed al the survivors of Ahab's family there; he destroyed it, asYahweh had told Elijah it would happen.
18 E congregò Ieu tutto il popolo, e disse: Acab adorò Baal poco, ma io gli sacrificherò più.	18 Then Jehu assembled al the people. 'Ahab did Baal some smal service,' he said, 'but Jehu wil dohim a great one.
19 E però convocate a me tutti i profeti di Baal e tutti i servi suoi [e] sacerdoti; e non gli rimanga nessuno che non venga, perchè il sacrificio è grande a me, che voglio fare a Baal; qualunque non ci sarà, sarà morto. E Ieu facea questo ad inganno, per volere disfare tutti quelli che sacrificavano [a] Baal.	19 Now cal me al the prophets of Baal and al his priests. Not one is to be absent: I have a greatsacrifice to offer to Baal. If anyone is absent, he wil forfeit his life.' This was a trick on Jehu's part to destroy thedevotees of Baal.
20 [E disse: santificate il dì solenne di Baal. E chiamò]	20 'Summon a sacred assembly for Baal,' he commanded; and they summoned it.
21 e mandò per tutte le terre d' Israel; e tutti i servi di Baal vennero, e non rimase solamente uno che non venisse. Ed entrarono nel tempio di Baal; e fu piena la casa di Baal da sommo a sommo.	21 Jehu sent messengers throughout Israel, and all the devotees of Baal arrived, not a man was left whodid not attend. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was full from wal to wall.
22 E disse a quelli ch' erano sopra le vestimenta date le vestimenta a tutti i servi di Baal. E diedero loro le vestimenta.	22 Jehu then said to the keeper of the wardrobe, 'Bring out vestments for al the devotees of Baal'; hebrought out the vestments for them.
23 Ed entrò Ieu, e Ionadab figliuolo di Recab, nel tempio di Baal', e disse ai coltivatori di Baal: cercate, e vedete acciò che niuno sia con esso voi de' servi del Signore, ma sieno soli i servi di Baal.	23 Jehu then went into the temple of Baal with Jehonadab son of Rechab and said to Baal's devotees,'Make quite sure that there are no devotees of Yahweh in here with you, but only devotees of Baal.'
24 Ed entrarono costoro per fare le vittime e gli olocausti; e Ieu avea apparecchiato di fuori ottanta uomini, e avea detto loro: qualunque fuggirà di tutti costoro, li quali vi ho messi nelle mani, l'anima sua sarà per l'anima di colui.	24 He then proceeded to present sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed eighty of hismen outside, having said, 'Whoever lets one of the people go whom I am now putting within your clutches, wilpay for it with his life.'
25 E compiuto lo olocausto, comandò Ieu a' cavalieri e capitani suoi, dicendo: entrate dentro, e uccidetegli tutti, e nullo ne campi. E tutti gli uccisero di coltello, e gittaronli fuori i cavalieri e i capitani; e andarono alla città del tempio di Baal.	25 When he had finished making the burnt offering, he gave the order to the guards and equerries, 'Goin, strike them down! Let no one out!' The guards and equerries went in, putting everyone to the sword al theway to the sanctuary of Baal's temple.
26 E arserla e disfecerla, e ruinoro la statua di Baal.	26 They took the sacred pole out of Baal's temple and burned it.
27 E disfecero la casa di Baal; e fecero di quella necessario, insino al presente dì.	27 They demolished Baal's image and demolished Baal's temple too, making it into a latrine, which it stilis today.
28 E tolse via Ieu Baal d' Israel.	28 Thus Jehu rid Israel of Baal.
29 Ma dai peccati di Ieroboam figliuolo di Nabat, il quale fece peccare Israel, non si partio, e non lasciò gli vitelli dell' oro, i quali erano in Betel e in Dan.	29 Even so, Jehu did not give up the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel, the goldencalves of Bethel and Dan.
30 Disse Iddio a Ieu: però che tu sollecitamente hai fatto quello che è diritto e che piacea negli occhi miei, e tutte le cose ch' erano nel mio cuore tu hai fatto contro la casa di Acab, i tuoi figliuoli insino in la quarta generazione sederanno sopra (la porta e sopra) la sedia d' Israel.	30 Yahweh said to Jehu, 'Since you have done wel in carrying out what pleases me, and have doneeverything I required to be done to the House of Ahab, your sons wil occupy the throne of Israel down to thefourth generation.'
31 Ma Ieu non si guardò per andare per la legge del suo Signore Iddio d' Israel con tutto il suo cuore; però [che] non si spartitte dai peccati di Ieroboam, il quale fece peccare Israel.	31 Jehu, however, did not faithful y and wholeheartedly fol ow the law of Yahweh, God of Israel; he didnot give up the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel.
32 E in quelli dì cominciò Iddio a rincrescere [sopra] ad Israel; e percossegli Azael in tutti i confini d' Israel,	32 At that time Yahweh began to whittle Israel down, and Hazael defeated the Israelites throughout theterritory east of the Jordan:
33 dal Giordano verso la parte d' oriente, tutta la terra di Galaad, e Gad e Ruben e Manasse, da Aroer la quale è sopra il fiume Arnon, e Galaad e Basan.	33 the whole territory of Gilead -- of the Gadites, the Reubenites and the Manassehites -- from Aroer onthe River Arnon: Gilead and Bashan.
34 Tutte l' altre cose de' fatti di Ieu, e tutte le cose che fece, e la sua fortezza, non sono elle scritte nel libro de' fatti de' re d' Israel?	34 The rest of the history of Jehu, his entire career, al his prowess, is this not recorded in the Book ofthe Annals of the Kings of Israel?
35 E dormi Ieu colli suoi padri, e seppellironlo in Samaria; e regnò per lui Ioacaz suo figliuolo.	35 Then he fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria; his son Jehoahaz succeeded him.
36 Il tempo, che Ieu regnò sopra Israel, fu venti otto anni, in Samaria.	36 Jehu's reign over Israel in Samaria lasted twenty-eight years.
