1 וַיֹּאמֶר גַּם אֶל־תַּלְמִידָיו אִישׁ עָשִׁיר הָיָה וְלוֹ פָקִיד עַל־בֵּיתוֹ וַיַּלְשִׁינֻהוּ אֵלָיו בְּאָמְרָם כִּי־מְפַזֵּר הוּא אֶת־קִנְיָנֶיךָ	1 He also said to his disciples, 'There was a rich man and he had a steward who was denounced to himfor being wasteful with his property.
2 וַיִּקְרָא אֹתוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מַה־זֹּאת שָׁמַעְתִּי עָלֶיךָ תֵּן חֶשְׁבּוֹן פְּקִידוּתְךָ כִּי לֹא תוּכַל לִהְיוֹת עוֹד פָּקִיד	2 He called for the man and said, "What is this I hear about you? Draw me up an account of yourstewardship because you are not to be my steward any longer."
3 וַיֹּאמֶר הַפָּקִיד בְּלִבּוֹ מָה אֶעֱשֶׂה כִּי־יִקַּח אֲדֹנִי מִמֶּנִּי אֶת־הַפְּקִידוּת לַעֲדֹר לֹא־אוּכַל וְלִשְׁאֹל עַל־הַפְּתָחִים אֲנִי בוֹשׁ	3 Then the steward said to himself, "Now that my master is taking the stewardship from me, what am I todo? Dig? I am not strong enough. Go begging? I should be too ashamed.
4 יָדַעְתִּי מָה אֶעֱשֶׂה לְמַעַן יַאַסְפוּנִי אֶל־בָּתֵּיהֶם בְּעֵת אוּסַר מִפְּקִידוּתִי	4 Ah, I know what I wil do to make sure that when I am dismissed from office there will be some towelcome me into their homes."
5 וַיִּקְרָא אֶל־כָּל־אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־נָשָׁה בָהֶם אֲדֹנָיו וַיִּשְׁאַל אֶת־הָרִאשׁוֹן כַּמָּה אַתָּה חַיָּב לַאדֹנִי	5 'Then he called his master's debtors one by one. To the first he said, "How much do you owe mymaster?"
6 וַיֹּאמֶר מְאַת בַּתֵּי שָׁמֶן וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו קַח אֶת־שְׁטָרְךָ וּמַהֵר שֵׁב וְכָתַבְתָּ חֲמִשִּׁים	6 "One hundred measures of oil," he said. The steward said, "Here, take your bond; sit down and quickly write fifty."
7 וְאֶל־אַחֵר אָמַר כַּמָּה אַתָּה חַיָּב וַיֹּאמֶר מְאַת כֹּר חִטִּים וַיֹּאמֶר קַח אֶת־שְׁטָרְךָ וּכְתֹב שְׁמֹנִים	7 To another he said, "And you, sir, how much do you owe?" "One hundred measures of wheat," hesaid. The steward said, "Here, take your bond and write eighty."
8 וַיְשַׁבַּח הָאָדוֹן אֶת־פְּקִיד הָעַוְלָה עַל־אֲשֶׁר הֶעֱרִים לַעֲשׂוֹת כִּי בְנֵי הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה עֲרוּמִים הֵם בְּדוֹרָם מִבְּנֵי הָאוֹר	8 'The master praised the dishonest steward for his astuteness. For the children of this world are moreastute in dealing with their own kind than are the children of light.'
9 וְגַם־אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם עֲשֹוּ לָכֶם אֹהֲבִים בִּמְמוֹן הָעַוְלָה לְמַעַן בְּעֵת כְּלֹתוֹ יַאַסְפוּ אֶתְכֶם אֶל־מִשְׁכְּנוֹת עוֹלָם	9 'And so I tel you this: use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when itfails you, they wil welcome you into eternal dwel ings.
10 הַנֶּאֱמָן בִּמְעַט מִזְעָר נֶאֱמָן גַּם־בְּהַרְבֵּה וְהַמְעַוֵּל בִּמְעַט מִזְעָר מְעַוֵּל גַּם־בְּהַרְבֵּה	10 Anyone who is trustworthy in little things is trustworthy in great; anyone who is dishonest in littlethings is dishonest in great.
11 לָכֵן אִם־בִּמְמוֹן הָעַוְלָה לֹא הֱיִיתֶם נֶאֱמָנִים אֵת הָאֲמִתִּי מִי יַפְקִיד בְּיֶדְכֶם	11 If then you are not trustworthy with money, that tainted thing, who wil trust you with genuine riches?
12 וְאִם־בַּדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר לַאֲחֵרִים לֹא הֱיִיתֶם נֶאֱמָנִים אֵת אֲשֶׁר לָכֶם מִי יִתֵּן לָכֶם	12 And if you are not trustworthy with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own?
13 אֵין עֶבֶד אֲשֶׁר יוּכַל לַעֲבֹד שְׁנֵי אֲדֹנִים כִּי יִשְׂנָא אֶת־הָאֶחָד וְיֶאֱהַב אֶת־הָאַחֵר אוֹ יִדְבַּק בָּאֶחָד וְאֶת־הָאַחֵר יִבְזֶה לֹא תוּכְלוּ עֲבֹד אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים וְאֵת הַמָּמוֹן	13 'No servant can be the slave of two masters: he wil either hate the first and love the second, or beattached to the first and despise the second. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.'
14 וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ כָל־זֹאת גַּם־הַפְּרוּשִׁים אֲשֶׁר הֵם אֹהֲבֵי כָסֶף וַיִּלְעֲגוּ לוֹ	14 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and jeered at him.
15 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם אַתֶּם הֵם הַמִּצְטַדְּקִים לִפְנֵי הָאָדָם וֵאלֹהִים יוֹדֵעַ אֶת־לְבַבְכֶם כִּי הַגָּבֹהַּ בָּאָדָם תּוֹעֵבָה הוּא לִפְנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים	15 He said to them, 'You are the very ones who pass yourselves off as upright in people's sight, but Godknows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed in human eyes is loathsome in the sight of God.
16 הַתּוֹרָה וְהַנְּבִיאִים עַד־יוֹחָנָן וּמִן־אָז וָהָלְאָה בְּשׂוֹרַת מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים וְכָל־אִישׁ בְּחָזְקָה יָבוֹא בָהּ	16 'Up to the time of John it was the Law and the Prophets; from then onwards, the kingdom of God hasbeen preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it.
17 אֲבָל נָקֵל כִּי יַעַבְרוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ מֵאֲשֶׁר יִפֹּל קוֹץ אֶחָד מִן־הַתּוֹרָה	17 'It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for one little stroke to drop out of the Law.
18 כָּל־אִישׁ הַמְשַׁלֵּחַ אֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹ וְלֹקֵחַ אַחֶרֶת נֹאֵף הוּא וְכָל־הַלֹּקֵחַ אֶת־הַגְּרוּשָׁה מֵאִישָׁהּ נֹאֵף הוּא	18 'Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery, and the man who marries awoman divorced by her husband commits adultery.
19 אִישׁ עָשִׁיר הָיָה וְהוּא לָבוּשׁ אַרְגָּמָן וָשֵׁשׁ וַיִּתְעַנֵּג וַיִּשְׂמַח יוֹם יוֹם	19 'There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feast magnificently every day.
20 וְאִישׁ אֶבְיוֹן וּשְׁמוֹ לַעְזָר מֻשְׁכָּב פֶּתַח שַׁעַר בֵּיתוֹ וְהוּא מָלֵא אֲבַעְבֻּעוֹת	20 And at his gate there used to lie a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores,
21 וַיִּתְאַו לִשְׂבֹּעַ מִן־הַפֵּרוּרִים הַנֹּפְלִים מֵעַל שֻׁלְחַן הֶעָשִׁיר וְגַם־הַכְּלָבִים בָּאוּ וַיָּלֹקּוּ אֲבַעְבֻּעוֹתָיו	21 who longed to fil himself with what fel from the rich man's table. Even dogs came and licked hissores.
22 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר מֵת הָאֶבְיוֹן וַיּוּבַל עַל־יְדֵי הַמַּלְאָכִים אֶל־חֵיק אַבְרָהָם וַיָּמָת גַּם־הֶעָשִׁיר וַיִּקָּבֵר	22 Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels into Abraham'sembrace. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 וּבִהְיוֹתוֹ בְּמַכְאֹבוֹת בִּשְׁאוֹל וַיִּשָּׂא אֶת־עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת־אַבְרָהָם מֵרָחוֹק וְאֶת־לַעְזָר בְּחֵיקוֹ	23 'In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his embrace.
24 וַיִּצְעַק וַיֹּאמֶר אָבִי אַבְרָהָם חָנֵּנִי וּשְׁלַח־נָא אֶת־לַעְזָר וְיִטְבֹּל אֶת־קְצֵה אֶצְבָּעוֹ בַּמַּיִם לְמַעַן קָרֵר אֶת־לְשׁוֹנִי כִּי עֻנֵּיתִי בַּמּוֹקֵד הַזֶּה	24 So he cried out, "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water andcool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames."
25 וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָהָם בְּנִי זְכֹר כִּי־לָקַחְתָּ טוּבְךָ בְּחַיֶּיךָ וְגַם לַעְזָר לָקַח אֶת־הָרָעוֹת וְעַתָּה הוּא יְנֻחַם וְאַתָּה תִּצְטָעָר	25 Abraham said, "My son, remember that during your life you had your fill of good things, just asLazarus his fill of bad. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony.
26 וּמִלְּבַד כָּל־זֹאת שׁוּחָה גְדוֹלָה מַפְסֶקֶת בֵּינֵינוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶם לְבִלְתִּי יוּכְלוּ עֲבוֹר הַחֲפֵצִים לָלֶכֶת מִפֹּה אֲלֵיכֶם וּלְבִלְתִּי יַעַבְרוּ מִשָּׁם אֵלֵינוּ	26 But that is not al : between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, to prevent those who want tocross from our side to yours or from your side to ours."
27 וַיֹּאמֶר אִם־כֵּן אָבִי שֹׁאֵל אֲנִי מֵאִתְּךָ כִּי־תִשְׁלַח אֹתוֹ אֶל־בֵּית אָבִי	27 'So he said, "Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father's house,
28 כִּי יֶשׁ־לִי חֲמִשָּׁה אַחִים לְמַעַן יָעִיד בָּהֶם פֶּן־יָבֹאוּ גַם־הֵם אֶל־מְקוֹם הַמַּעֲצֵבָה הַזֶּה	28 since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to this place of torment too."
29 וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָהָם יֵשׁ לָהֶם משֶׁה וְהַנְּבִיאִים אֲלֵיהֶם יִשְׁמָעוּן	29 Abraham said, "They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them."
30 וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא־כֵן אָבִי אַבְרָהָם אַךְ אִם־יֵלֵךְ אֲלֵיהֶם אֶחָד מִן־הַמֵּתִים אָז יָשׁוּבוּ	30 The rich man replied, "Ah no, father Abraham, but if someone comes to them from the dead, they willrepent."
31 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אִם־לֹא יִשְׁמְעוּ אֶל־משֶׁה וְאֶל־הַנְּבִיאִים גַּם כִּי־יָקוּם אֶחָד מִן־הַמֵּתִים לֹא יַאֲמִינוּ	31 Then Abraham said to him, "If they wil not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they wil not beconvinced even if someone should rise from the dead."
