Deuteronômio 25

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quando dois homens questionarem entre si e forem apresentados diante do tribunal para serem julgados e, tendo sido justificado o inocente e condenado o culpado,	1 'If people fal out, they must go to court for judgement; the judges must declare the one who is right tobe in the right, the one who is wrong to be in the wrong.
2 se o culpado merecer ser açoitado, o juiz fá-lo-á deitar por terra e o fará açoitar em sua presença com um número de golpes proporcional ao seu delito.	2 If the one who is in the wrong deserves a flogging, the judge must have him laid on the ground andflogged in his presence, the number of strokes proportionate to his offence.
3 Não se poderá ultrapassar o número de quarenta, para que não suceda que, sendo-lhe infligido mais do que isso, o teu irmão se retire aviltado aos teus olhos.	3 He may impose forty strokes but no more; otherwise, by the infliction of more, serious injury may becaused and your brother be humiliated before you.
4 Não atarás a boca ao boi quando ele pisar o grão.	4 'You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn.
5 Se alguns irmãos habitarem juntos, e um deles morrer sem deixar filhos, a mulher do defunto não se casará fora com um estranho: seu cunhado a desposará e se aproximará dela, observando o costume do levirato.	5 'If brothers live together and one of them dies childless, the dead man's wife may not marry a strangeroutside the family. Her husband's brother must come to her and, exercising his duty as brother, make her hiswife,
6 Ao primeiro filho que ela tiver se porá o nome do irmão morto, a fim de que o seu nome não se extinga em Israel.	6 and the first son she bears must assume the dead brother's name; by this means his name wil not beobliterated from Israel.
7 Porém, se lhe repugnar receber a mulher do seu irmão, essa mulher irá ter com os anciães à porta da cidade e lhes dirá: meu cunhado recusa perpetuar o nome de seu irmão em Israel e não quer observar o costume do levirato, recebendo-me por mulher.	7 But if the man declines to take his brother's wife, she must go to the elders at the gate and say, "Ihave no brother-in-law willing to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel; he declines to exercise his duty asbrother in my favour."
8 Eles o farão logo comparecer e o interrogarão. Se persistir em declarar que não a quer desposar,	8 The elders of the town must summon the man and talk to him. If, on appearing before them, he says,"I refuse to take her,"
9 sua cunhada se aproximará dele em presença dos anciães, tirar-lhe-á a sandália do pé e lhe cuspirá no rosto, dizendo: eis o que se faz ao homem que recusa levantar a casa de seu irmão!	9 then the woman to whom he owes duty as brother must go up to him in the presence of the elders,take the sandal off his foot, spit in his face, and pronounce the fol owing words, "This is what is done to the manwho refuses to restore his brother's house,"
10 E a família desse homem se chamará em Israel a família do descalçado.	10 and his family must henceforth be known in Israel as House of the Unshod.
11 Se dois homens estiverem em disputa, e a mulher de um vier em socorro de seu marido para livrá-lo do seu assaltante e pegar este pelas partes vergonhosas,	11 'If, when two men are fighting, the wife of one intervenes to protect her husband from the other'sblows by reaching out and seizing the other by his private parts,
12 cortarás a mão dessa mulher, sem compaixão alguma	12 you must cut off her hand and show no pity.
13 Não terás em tua bolsa duas espécies de pesos, uma pedra grande e uma pequena.	13 'You must not keep two different weights in your bag, one heavy, one light.
14 Não terás duas espécies de efás, um grande e um pequeno.	14 You must not keep two different measures in your house, one large, one smal .
15 Tuas pedras serão um peso exato e justo, para que sejam prolongados os teus dias na terra que te dá o Senhor, teu Deus.	15 You must keep one weight, ful and accurate, so that you may have long life in the country given youby Yahweh your God.
16 Porque quem faz essas coisas, quem comete fraude, é abominável aos olhos do Senhor, teu Deus.	16 For anyone who does things of this kind and acts dishonestly is detestable to Yahweh your God.
17 Lembra-te do que te fez Amalec no caminho, quando saíste do Egito,	17 'Remember how Amalek treated you when you were on your way out of Egypt.
18 de como ele, sem temor algum de Deus, estando vós cansados e extenuados, veio atacar-te no caminho, atingindo todos os desfalecidos que te seguiam.	18 He met you on your way and, after you had gone by, he fel on you from the rear and cut off thestragglers; when you were faint and weary, he had no fear of God.
19 Quando, pois, o Senhor, teu Deus, te tiver dado segurança na terra que te dá como herança, e te tiver livrado dos inimigos que te cercam, apagarás de debaixo dos céus a memória de Amalec. Não o esqueças.	19 When Yahweh your God has granted you peace from al the enemies surrounding you, in the countrygiven you by Yahweh your God to own as your heritage, you must blot out the memory of Amalek under heaven.Do not forget.'
