1 Intanto i Filistei ingaggiarono battaglia contro Israele e gli uomini d'Israele si dettero alla fuga di fronte ai Filistei e caddero trafitti sul monte Gelboe.	1 As they pressed their attack on Israel, with the Israelites fleeing before them and falling mortally wounded on Mount Gilboa,
2 I Filistei si gettarono addosso a Saul e ai suoi figli, così colpirono Gionata, Abinadàb e Malkisuà, figli di Saul.	2 the Philistines pursued Saul and his sons closely, and slew Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, sons of Saul.
3 La battaglia si aggravò contro Saul; gli arcieri lo presero di mira con gli archi ed egli fu ferito dagli arcieri.	3 The battle raged around Saul, and the archers hit him; he was pierced through the abdomen.
4 Allora Saul disse al suo scudiero: "Sfodera la tua spada e trafiggimi con essa, affinché non vengano quegli incirconcisi, mi trafiggano e facciano sevizie su di me". Ma il suo scudiero non volle perché era pieno di timore. Allora Saul prese la spada e si gettò su di essa.	4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and run me through, lest these uncircumcised come and make sport of me." But his armor-bearer, badly frightened, refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.
5 Quando lo scudiero vide che Saul era morto, anch'egli si gettò sulla propria spada e morì con lui.	5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell upon his sword and died with him.
6 In quel giorno morirono insieme Saul, i suoi tre figli, il suo scudiero e tutti i suoi uomini.	6 Thus Saul, his three sons, and his armor-bearer died together on that same day.
7 Quando gl'Israeliti che erano di là della valle e quelli che erano di là del Giordano videro che gli uomini d'Israele erano fuggiti e che Saul e i suoi figli erano morti, abbandonarono le città e fuggirono. Allora vennero i Filistei e vi si stabilirono.	7 When the Israelites on the slope of the valley and those along the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they too abandoned their cities and fled. Then the Philistines came and lived in those cities.
8 Il giorno seguente i Filistei andarono a spogliare gli uccisi e trovarono Saul e i suoi tre figli caduti sul monte Gelboe.	8 The day after the battle the Philistines came to strip the slain, and found Saul and his three sons lying on Mount Gilboa.
9 Essi troncarono la testa di lui e lo spogliarono delle armi, poi mandarono in giro nel paese dei Filistei a dare la bella notizia nel tempio dei loro idoli e al popolo.	9 They cut off Saul's head and stripped him of his armor, and then sent the good news throughout the land of the Philistines to their idols and to the people.
10 Deposero le sue armi nel tempio di Astarte, mentre il suo cadavere lo affissero alle mura di Bet-Sean.	10 They put his armor in the temple of Astarte, but impaled his body on the wall of Bethshan.
11 Gli abitanti di Iabes di Gàlaad udirono quello che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul;	11 When the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 allora si alzarono tutti gli uomini valorosi e, dopo aver viaggiato tutta la notte, presero il corpo di Saul e i corpi dei suoi figli dalle mura di Bet-Sean; ritornarono a Iabes, dove li bruciarono.	12 all their warriors set out, and after marching throughout the night, removed the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and brought them to Jabesh, where they cremated them.
13 Poi, prese le loro ossa, le seppellirono sotto il tamarisco a Iabes e fecero digiuno per sette giorni.	13 Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and fasted for seven days.
