1 Davide si alzò e partì, mentre Gionata rientrò in città.	1 Then David departed on his way, while Jonathan went back into the city.
2 Davide giunse a Nob dal sacerdote Achimelech. Achimelech andò incontro a Davide con trepidazione dicendogli: "Perché sei tu solo e non c'è nessuno con te?".	2 David went to Ahimelech, the priest of Nob, who came trembling to meet him and asked, "Why are you alone? Is there no one with you?"
3 Davide rispose al sacerdote Achimelech: "Il re mi ha comandato una certa cosa e mi ha detto: "Nessuno sappia niente della cosa per cui io ti mando e che ti ho comandato!". Agli uomini ho dato ordini per il luogo tale e tale.	3 David answered the priest: "The king gave me a commission and told me to let no one know anything about the business on which he sent me or the commission he gave me. For that reason I have arranged a meeting place with my men.
4 E ora che cosa hai sotto mano? Dammi cinque pani o quello che ti capita".	4 Now what have you on hand? Give me five loaves, or whatever you can find."
5 Il sacerdote rispose a Davide: "Non ho pane comune sotto mano, c'è solo pane sacro, purché i giovani si siano astenuti almeno dalla donna".	5 But the priest replied to David, "I have no ordinary bread on hand, only holy bread; if the men have abstained from women, you may eat some of that."
6 Davide rispose al sacerdote: "Certo, ci è interdetta la donna come per il passato. Ogni volta che esco, i giovani sono mondi, pur essendo un viaggio profano; quanto più oggi sono mondi!".	6 David answered the priest: "We have indeed been segregated from women as on previous occasions. Whenever I go on a journey, all the young men are consecrated--even for a secular journey. All the more so today, when they are consecrated at arms!"
7 Allora il sacerdote gli dette il pane sacro, perché non c'era altro pane, se non il pane della proposizione tolto dalla presenza del Signore, per sostituirlo col pane caldo nel giorno in cui viene tolto.	7 So the priest gave him holy bread, for no other bread was on hand except the showbread which had been removed from the LORD'S presence and replaced by fresh bread when it was taken away.
8 Ma in quel giorno vi era lì un uomo dei servi di Saul, trattenuto alla presenza del Signore, di nome Doeg, l'idumeo, capo dei pastori di Saul.	8 One of Saul's servants was there that day, detained before the LORD; his name was Doeg the Edomite, and he was Saul's chief henchman.
9 Davide domandò ad Achimelech: "Non c'è niente qui sotto mano, una lancia o una spada? Non ho preso con me né la mia spada né le mie armi, perché l'incarico del re era urgente".	9 David then asked Ahimelech: "Do you have a spear or a sword on hand? I brought along neither my sword nor my weapons, because the king's business was urgent."
10 Il sacerdote rispose: "La spada di Golia il filisteo, che tu hai colpito nella Valle del Terebinto; eccola avvolta in un panno dietro l'efod. Se te la vuoi prendere, prendila, perché qui non ce n'è un'altra, ad eccezione di essa". Davide disse: "Non ve n'è una come quella! Dammela".	10 The priest replied: "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Vale of the Terebinth, is here (wrapped in a mantle) behind an ephod. If you wish to take that, take it; there is no sword here except that one." David said: "There is none to match it. Give it to me!"
11 Davide si levò e se ne fuggì in quel giorno dalla presenza di Saul e andò da Achis, re di Gat.	11 That same day David took to flight from Saul, going to Achish, king of Gath.
12 Ma i servi dissero ad Achis: "Questo non è Davide, re del paese? Non era per lui che si ripeteva nelle danze: "Saul colpì le sue migliaia, ma Davide le sue miriadi"?".	12 But the servants of Achish said, "Is this not David, the king of the land? During their dances do they not sing, 'Saul has slain his thousands, but David his ten thousands'?"
13 Davide si preoccupò di queste parole ed ebbe molta paura di Achis, re di Gat.	13 David took note of these remarks and became very much afraid of Achish, king of Gath.
14 Allora cambiò modo di agire sotto i loro occhi e simulò pazzia tra le loro mani: scarabocchiava sui battenti della porta e faceva colare bava sulla sua barba.	14 So, as they watched, he feigned insanity and acted like a madman in their hands, drumming on the doors of the gate and drooling onto his beard.
15 Achis disse ai suoi servi: "Ecco, vedete, l'uomo è matto! Perché me lo avete condotto?	15 Finally Achish said to his servants: "You see the man is mad. Why did you bring him to me?
16 Ho forse bisogno di matti, che mi conducete questo tale per fare il pazzo alle mie spalle? Deve entrare questo tale in casa mia?".	16 Do I not have enough madmen, that you bring in this one to carry on in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?"
