LA SACRA BIBBIA	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Gli Israeliti fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, il quale li dette per sette anni nelle mani dei Madianiti.	1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord: and he delivered them into the hand of Madian seven years.
2 La mano dei Madianiti fu terribile sopra Israele. Gli Israeliti, per timore dei Madianiti, andavano ad abitare sui monti, in caverne e in luoghi di difficile accesso.
3 Quando gli Israeliti avevano seminato, venivano contro di loro i Madianiti, gli Amaleciti e altri popoli dell'Oriente,	3 And they were grievously oppressed by them. And they made themselves dens and eaves in the mountains, and strong holds to resist.
4 che, dopo aver posto le tende nel territorio degli Israeliti, devastavano tutte le messi fino al confine di Gaza. Non lasciavano niente di vivo in Israele, né pecore né buoi né asini.	4 And when Israel had sown, Madian and Amalec, and the rest of the eastern nations came up:
5 I nemici venivano col loro bestiame; le loro tende erano numerose come le cavallette e i loro cammelli non avevano numero. Venivano nella regione per devastarla.	5 And pitching their tents among them, wasted all things as they were in the blade even to the entrance of Gaza: and they left nothing at all in Israel for sustenance of life, nor sheep, nor oxen, nor asses.
6 Così gli Israeliti, a causa dei Madianiti, caddero in profonda miseria e alzarono il loro grido al Signore.	6 For they and all their flocks came with their tents, and like locusts filled all places, an innumerable multitude of men, and of camels, wasting whatsoever they touched.
7 Alzarono il loro grido al Signore a motivo dei Madianiti	7 And Israel was humbled exceedingly in the sight of Madian.
8 ed egli inviò loro un profeta che disse: "Così dice il Signore, Dio d'Israele: "Io vi feci uscire dall'Egitto, vi liberai dalla vostra schiavitù.	8 And he cried to the Lord desiring help against the Madianites.
9 Vi liberai dalle mani degli Egiziani e da quelle di tutti i vostri oppressori che cacciai davanti a voi, finché non vi detti la loro terra.	9 And he sent unto them a prophet, and he spoke: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I made you to come up out of Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage,
10 Vi dissi che ero il Signore, Dio vostro, e perciò di non temere gli dèi degli Amorrei, nella cui terra voi abitate; ma voi non avete dato ascolto alla mia voce".	10 And delivered you out of the hands of the Egyptians, and of all the enemies that afflicted you: and I cast them out at your coming in, and gave you their land.
11 Venne il messaggero del Signore e si fermò sotto la quercia che era in Ofra e apparteneva a Ioas, della famiglia di Abiezer. Intanto Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, stava battendo il grano nel frantoio per sfuggire ai Madianiti.	11 dummy verses inserted by amos
12 Il messaggero del Signore gli apparve e gli disse: "Il Signore è con te, prode guerriero".	12 And an angel of the Lord came, and sat under an oak, that was in Ephra, and belonged to Joas the father of the family of Ezri. And when Gedeon his son was threshing and cleansing wheat by the winepress, to flee from Madian,
13 Gli rispose Gedeone: "Oh, Signore! Se il Signore è con noi, com'è che ci troviamo fra questi mali? Dove sono tutti quei prodigi del Signore, di cui ci parlano i nostri padri, quando dicono che egli ci fece uscire dall'Egitto? Ora il Signore ci ha abbandonato e ci ha dato nelle mani di Madian".	13 The angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said: The Lord is with thee, O most valiant of men.
14 Il Signore allora si rivolse verso di lui con queste parole: "Va', perché con la tua forza salverai Israele dalle mani dei Madianiti. Sono io che ti mando".	14 And Gedeon said to him: I beseech thee, my lord, if the Lord be with us, why have these evils fallen upon us? Where are his miracles, which our fathers have told us of, saying: The Lord brought us Out of Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the bands of Madian.
15 Gli rispose Gedeone: "Oh, Signore! Come farò a liberare Israele?! La mia famiglia è la più oscura in Manasse e io ne sono il membro più insignificante!".	15 And the Lord looked upon him, and said: Go in this thy strength, and then shalt deliver Israel out of the hand of Madian: know that I have sent thee.
16 Ma il Signore riprese: "Sarò io con te e tu potrai abbattere i Madianiti, come se fossero un solo uomo".	16 He answered and said: I beseech thee, my lord, wherewith shall I deliver Israel? Behold my family is the meanest in Manasses, and I am the least in my father's house.
17 Gedeone disse: "Se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, dammi un segno che sei proprio tu quello che parla con me.	17 And the Lord said to him: I will be with thee: and thou shalt cut off Madian as one man.
18 Non ti allontanare di qui, ti prego, finché non sarò tornato; ché voglio prepararti un dono per offrirtelo". Il messaggero del Signore l'assicurò che sarebbe restato lì finché egli non fosse tornato.	18 And he said: If I have found grace before thee, give me a sign that it is thou that speakest to me,
19 Gedeone entrò in casa e preparò carne di capretto e pane azzimo. Posta poi la carne in una cesta e il brodo in un tegame, uscì incontro all'ospite che lo attendeva sotto la quercia e gli offrì il cibo.	19 And depart not hence, till I return to thee, and bring a sacrifice, and offer it to thee. And he answered: I will wait thy coming.
20 Il messaggero di Dio, allora, gli disse di prendere la carne e le focacce, di porle su una pietra che c'era lì e versarvi sopra il brodo. Quando Gedeone ebbe fatto tutto,	20 So Gedeon went in, and boiled a kid, and made unleavened loaves of a measure of flour: and putting the flesh in a basket, and the broth of the flesh into a pot, he carried all under the oak, and presented to him.
21 il messaggero del Signore stese la punta del bastone che teneva in mano toccando la carne e le focacce. Subito un fuoco sprigionatosi dal sasso divorò la carne e le focacce. Poi il messaggero del Signore scomparve dalla vista di Gedeone,	21 And the angel of the Lord said to him: Take the flesh and the unleavened loaves, and lay them upon that rock, and pour out the broth thereon. And when he had done so,
22 il quale, resosi conto che quello era davvero il messaggero del Signore, esclamò: "Ahimè! Signore Dio! Ho visto davvero il messaggero del Signore faccia a faccia!".	22 The angel of the Lord put forth the tip of the rod, which he held in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and there arose a fire from the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and the angel of the Lord vanished out of his sight.
23 Il Signore gli disse: "La pace sia con te. Non temere, ché non morrai!".	23 And Gedeon seeing that it was the angel of the Lord, said: Alas, my Lord God: for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.
24 Gedeone edificò in quel posto un altare, al quale pose nome "Il Signore è pace": esso si trova ancor oggi in Ofra di Abiezer.	24 And the Lord said to him: Peace be with thee: fear not, thou shalt not die.
25 Accadde che quella stessa notte il Signore disse a Gedeone: "Prendi quel toro che ha tuo padre e un secondo di sette anni; poi abbatti l'altare di Baal che ha fatto tuo padre e spezza il palo sacro che gli sta accanto.	25 And Gedeon built there an altar to the Lord, and called it the Lord's peace, until this present day. And when he was yet in Ephra, which is of the family of Ezri,
26 Costruirai poi un altare al Signore, Dio tuo, sulla cima di questo poggio, una pietra sull'altra. Prenderai il secondo toro e lo offrirai in olocausto sul legno del palo sacro che avrai fatto a pezzi".	26 That night the Lord said to him: Take a bullock of thy father's, and another bullock of seven years, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal, which is thy father's: and cut down the grove that is about the altar:
27 Gedeone, presi con sé dieci dei suoi servi, fece come gli aveva detto il Signore, e poiché temeva quelli della casa di suo padre e gli abitanti del villaggio, invece di agire di giorno, agì di notte.	27 And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God in the top of this rock, whereupon thou didst lay the sacrifice before: and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which thou shalt cut down out of the grove.
28 Il mattino seguente, quando gli abitanti del villaggio si svegliarono, videro che l'altare di Baal era stato frantumato, il palo sacro che gli sorgeva accanto era stato fatto a pezzi e il secondo vitello era stato sacrificato sul nuovo altare.	28 Then Gedeon taking ten men of his servants, did as the Lord had commanded him. But fearing his father's house, and the men of that city, he would not do it by day, but did all by night.
29 Poiché la gente voleva trovare chi era stato a compiere una cosa simile, fece un'attenta ricerca e scoprì che era stato Gedeone, figlio di Ioas.	29 And when the men of that town were risen in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the grove cut down, and the second bullock laid upon the altar, which then was built.
30 Allora gli abitanti del villaggio chiesero a Ioas che consegnasse loro suo figlio per ucciderlo, perché aveva distrutto l'altare di Baal e aveva spezzato il palo sacro che gli era drizzato accanto.	30 And they said one to another: Who hath done this? And when they inquired for the author of the fact, it was said: Gedeon the son of Joas did all this.
31 Ma Ioas rispose così alla folla che gli si accalcava d'intorno: "Volete per caso essere voi a difendere Baal? Voi a portare aiuto a lui? (Chiunque cercherà di difenderlo morrà prima di domani mattina!). Se è davvero un dio, penserà lui a vendicarsi, perché è stato abbattuto il suo altare".	31 And they said to Joas: Bring out thy son hither, that he may die: because he hath destroyed the altar of Baal, and hath cut down his grove.
32 Quel giorno Gedeone ricevette l'appellativo di Ierub-Baal, perché si diceva: "Si vendichi di lui Baal, ché ha distrutto il suo altare".	32 He answered them: Are you the avengers of Baal, that you fight for him? he that is his adversary, let him die before to morrow light appear: if he be a god, let him revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.
33 Tutti i Madianiti, gli Amaleciti e i popoli dell'Oriente si radunarono e, passato il Giordano, posero il campo nella valle di Izreel.	33 From that day Gedeon was called Jerobaal, because Joss had said: Let Baal revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.
34 Allora lo spirito del Signore investì Gedeone: questi suonò il corno e la gente di Abiezer si riunì intorno a lui, pronta alla lotta.	34 Now all Madian, and Amalec, and the eastern people were gathered together, and passing over the Jordan, camped in the valley of Jezrael.
35 Egli mandò messaggeri per tutto il territorio di Manasse e così anche gli uomini di Manasse si riunirono agli ordini di Gedeone. Poi mandò messaggeri in Aser, in Zabulon e in Neftali e anche gli uomini di queste tribù si mossero per congiungersi agli altri.	35 But the spirit of the Lord came upon Gedeon, and be sounded the trumpet and called together the house of Abiezer, to follow him.
36 Gedeone si rivolse a Dio: "Se hai intenzione di salvare Israele per mezzo mio, come hai promesso,	36 And he sent messengers into all Manasses, and they also followed him: and other messengers into Aser and Zabulon and Nephtali, and they came to meet him.
37 ecco che io stendo un vello nell'aia: se la rugiada cadrà soltanto sul vello e tutto il terreno all'intorno resterà asciutto, io saprò che tu hai intenzione, come hai detto, di salvare per mano mia Israele".	37 And Gedeon said to God: If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,
38 E così fu: quando il mattino dopo Gedeone si alzò, andò a strizzare il vello: ne venne fuori tanta rugiada da farne piena una coppa.	38 I will put this fleece of wool on the floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the ground beside, I, shall know that by my hand, as thou hast said, thou wilt deliver Israel.
39 Ma Gedeone si rivolse ancora a Dio: "Non divampi la tua ira contro di me, se voglio dirti ancora una cosa. Voglio ripetere ancora una volta la prova del vello: che questa volta resti asciutto solo il vello e tutto il terreno all'intorno si copra di rugiada".	39 And it was so. And rising before day wringing the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew.
40 La notte seguente Dio fece così e solo il vello restò asciutto mentre tutto il suolo intorno era coperto di rugiada.	40 And he said again to God: let not thy wrath be kindled against me if I try once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that the fleece only may be dry, and all the ground wet with dew.
