Lettera di Giacomo 4

1 Donde provengono le guerre e le battaglie tra di voi? Non provengono forse dalle vostre bramosie di piacere, che si combattono tra loro nelle vostre membra?	1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Bramate e non avete; uccidete e siete invidiosi, eppure non potete ottenere; battagliate e guerreggiate. Non avete perché non chiedete;	2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 chiedete ma non ricevete, perché chiedete male, con l'intento di dilapidare, seguendo le vostre bramosie.	3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
4 Adùlteri, non sapete che l'amore del mondo è inimicizia con Dio? Chi dunque vuole essere amico del mondo si fa nemico Dio.	4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Oppure pensate che la Scrittura parli a vuoto? Lo Spirito che abita in voi vi ama fino alla gelosia.	5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 Ma dà una grazia maggiore; per questo dice: Dio resiste ai superbi e dà la grazia agli umili.	6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Sottomettetevi dunque a Dio; opponetevi al diavolo ed egli fuggirà da voi.	7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Avvicinatevi a Dio ed egli si avvicinerà a voi. Voi, peccatori, purificatevi le mani; voi, anime indecise, mondate il vostro cuore.	8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Lamentate la vostra miseria, affliggetevi, piangete: il vostro riso si trasformi in pianto, la vostra esultanza diventi tristezza.	9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Umiliatevi davanti al Signore ed egli vi innalzerà.	10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
11 Non dite male gli uni degli altri, fratelli: chi dice male del fratello o giudica il fratello, dice male della legge e giudica la legge; e se tu giudichi la legge, non sei un esecutore della legge, ma ne sei giudice.	11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
12 Uno solo è legislatore e giudice, colui che ha la possibilità di salvare e di mandare in rovina; ma chi sei tu che giudichi il prossimo?	12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
13 Orsù, dunque, voi che dite: "Domani o dopodomani andremo nella tale città, vi passeremo l'anno, faremo affari, guadagneremo".	13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Voi, che non sapete quale sarà la vostra vita domani! Siete infatti un filo di vapore che appare per un po' di tempo e poi si dissolve.	14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 Dovreste invece dire: "Se il Signore vorrà, vivremo e faremo questo e quello".	15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
16 Voi invece vi vantate lo stesso dei vostri progetti ambiziosi: un vanto del genere è perverso.	16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
17 Chi sa compiere, dunque, il bene e non lo compie, costui è in peccato.	17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
