LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quando fu deciso di iniziare la nostra navigazione verso l'Italia, diedero in consegna Paolo e alcuni altri prigionieri a un centurione di nome Giulio, della coorte Augusta.	1 When it had been decided that we should sail to Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handedover to a centurion cal ed Julius, of the Augustan cohort.
2 Saliti su una nave di Adramitto, che stava per far vela verso i porti dell'Asia, prendemmo il mare avendo con noi Aristarco, un macedone di Tessalònica.	2 We boarded a vessel from Adramyttium bound for ports on the Asiatic coast and put to sea; we hadAristarchus with us, a Macedonian of Thessalonica.
3 Il giorno seguente approdammo a Sidone e Giulio, che trattava Paolo con benevolenza, permise che si recasse dagli amici per riceverne i buoni uffici.	3 Next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius was considerate enough to al ow Paul to go to his friends to belooked after.
4 Salpati di là facemmo vela sotto Cipro, poiché i venti erano contrari,	4 From there we put to sea again, but as the winds were against us we sailed under the lee of Cyprus,
5 e attraversato il mare di Cilicia e di Panfilia giungemmo a Mira della Licia.	5 then across the open sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia, taking a fortnight to reach Myra in Lycia.
6 Quivi il centurione trovò una nave alessandrina in rotta verso l'Italia e ci fece salire su di essa.	6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship leaving for Italy and put us aboard.
7 Per lunghi giorni navigammo lentamente e a stento giungemmo di fronte a Cnido. Poi il vento non ci permise di approdare, navigammo sotto Creta di fronte a Salmòne	7 For some days we made little headway, and we had difficulty in making Cnidus. The wind would notal ow us to touch there, so we sailed under the lee of Crete off Cape Salmone
8 e, costeggiandola a stento, arrivammo a una località chiamata Buoni Porti, presso la quale c'era la città di Lasèa.	8 and struggled along the coast until we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.
9 Essendo passato molto tempo ed essendo ormai malsicura la navigazione, poiché era già trascorso anche il giorno del digiuno, Paolo li ammoniva dicendo:	9 A great deal of time had been lost, and navigation was already hazardous, since it was now wel afterthe time of the Fast, so Paul gave them this warning,
10 "Amici, vedo che il continuare la navigazione sarebbe temerario e potrebbe portare molto danno non solo per il carico e per la nave, ma anche per le nostre vite".	10 'Friends, I can see this voyage will be dangerous and that we wil run considerable risk of losing notonly the cargo and the ship but also our lives as well.'
11 Ma il centurione si fidava di più del capitano e dell'armatore che delle parole di Paolo.	11 But the centurion took more notice of the captain and the ship's owner than of what Paul was saying;
12 E poiché il porto non era adatto per svernare, i più presero la decisione di salpare di là, nella speranza di poter giungere a svernare a Fenice, un porto di Creta che guarda a libeccio e a maestrale.	12 and since the harbour was unsuitable for wintering, the majority were for putting out from there in thehope of wintering at Phoenix -- a harbour in Crete, facing south-west and north-west.
13 Levatosi un vento leggero dal sud, ritennero di poter attuare il loro progetto e, levata l'àncora, si misero a costeggiare Creta.	13 A southerly breeze sprang up and, thinking their objective as good as reached, they weighed anchorand began to sail past Crete, close inshore.
14 Ma dopo non molto si scatenò sull'isola un vento d'uragano, chiamato euroaquilone.	14 But it was not long before a hurricane, the 'north-easter' as they cal it, burst on them from across theisland.
15 La nave fu trascinata via, non potendo resistere al vento, e ci lasciavamo portare alla deriva.	15 The ship was caught and could not keep head to wind, so we had to give way to the wind and letourselves be driven.
16 Filando sotto un'isoletta chiamata Càudas, a stento riuscimmo a restare padroni della scialuppa.	16 We ran under the lee of a smal island called Cauda and managed with some difficulty to bring theship's boat under control.
17 L'alzarono su e usarono i mezzi di soccorso per cingere di gomene la nave. Temendo poi di incorrere nella Sirte, calarono l'attrezzo, lasciandolo così portare alla deriva.	17 Having hauled it up they used it to undergird the ship; then, afraid of running aground on the Syrtisbanks, they floated out the sea-anchor and so let themselves drift.
18 Poiché erano violentemente battuti dalla tempesta, il giorno seguente fecero gettito del carico,	18 As we were thoroughly storm-bound, the next day they began to jettison the cargo,
19 e nel terzo giorno con le loro mani buttarono via l'attrezzatura della nave.	19 and the third day they threw the ship's gear overboard with their own hands.
20 Per più giorni non si videro né sole né stelle: la tempesta si manteneva violenta e si andava ormai perdendo ogni speranza di salvarci.	20 For a number of days both the sun and the stars were invisible and the storm raged unabated until atlast we gave up al hope of surviving.
21 Da molto tempo non si mangiava più. Allora Paolo, ritto in piedi in mezzo a loro, disse: "Amici, si sarebbe dovuto ascoltarmi e non far vela da Creta. Ci saremmo risparmiati questo rischio mortale e questa iattura.	21 Then, when they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among the men. 'Friends,' hesaid, 'you should have listened to me and not put out from Crete. You would have spared yourselves al thisdamage and loss.
22 Ma ora vi esorto a stare di buon animo: infatti non vi sarà alcuna perdita di vite umane, ma solo della nave.	22 But now I ask you not to give way to despair. There wil be no loss of life at al , only of the ship.
23 Infatti in questa notte mi si è presentato un angelo di Dio, di quel Dio a cui appartengo e a cui io servo,	23 Last night there appeared beside me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,
24 dicendomi: "Non temere, Paolo; tu devi comparire di fronte a Cesare, ed ecco, Dio ti ha fatto grazia di tutti coloro che navigano con te".	24 and he said, "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to appear before Caesar, and God grants youthe safety of al who are sailing with you."
25 Perciò state di buon animo, amici: perché ho fede in Dio che le cose andranno così come mi è stato detto.	25 So take courage, friends; I trust in God that things will turn out just as I was told;
26 Ci dovremo imbattere in un'isola".	26 but we are to be stranded on some island.'
27 Essendo ormai la quattordicesima notte che eravamo sbattuti nell'Adriatico, verso la metà della notte i marinai ebbero l'impressione che si stesse avvicinando terra.	27 On the fourteenth night we were being driven one way and another in the Adriatic, when aboutmidnight the crew sensed that land of some sort was near.
28 Calato lo scandaglio, trovarono venti braccia di profondità; poco dopo, gettando di nuovo lo scandaglio, trovarono quindici braccia.	28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; after a short interval they sounded again and foundfifteen fathoms.
29 Temendo che andassimo a cadere contro delle scogliere, dalla prua calarono le quattro ancore e aspettavano ansiosi che si facesse presto giorno.	29 Then, afraid that we might run aground somewhere on a reef, they dropped four anchors from thestern and prayed for daylight.
30 Ma poiché i marinai cercavano di fuggire dalla nave, e avevano calato la scialuppa in mare col pretesto di volere tendere delle ancore da prua,	30 When the crew tried to escape from the ship and lowered the ship's boat into the sea as though theymeant to lay out anchors from the bows, Paul said to the centurion and his men,
31 Paolo disse al centurione e ai soldati: "Se costoro non rimangono sulla nave, voi non potete essere salvi".	31 'Unless those men stay on board you cannot hope to be saved.'
32 Allora i soldati tagliarono le funi della scialuppa e la lasciarono cadere.	32 So the soldiers cut the boat's ropes and let it drop away.
33 Mentre si aspettava che cominciasse a farsi giorno, Paolo esortava tutti a prender cibo dicendo: "Oggi sono quattordici giorni che state in attesa digiuni, senza aver preso nulla.	33 Just before daybreak Paul urged them al to have something to eat. 'For fourteen days', he said, 'youhave been in suspense, going hungry and eating nothing.
34 Perciò io vi esorto a prendere cibo: ciò infatti è necessario per la vostra salute. Infatti non si perderà alcun capello del vostro capo".	34 I urge you to have something to eat; your safety depends on it. Not a hair of any of your heads wil belost.'
35 Dette queste cose, prese del pane, rese grazie a Dio in presenza di tutti e, spezzatolo, cominciò a mangiare.	35 With these words he took some bread, gave thanks to God in view of them al , broke it and began toeat.
36 Allora tutti, fattisi coraggio, presero anch'essi del cibo.	36 They al plucked up courage and took something to eat themselves.
37 Eravamo in tutto nella nave duecentosettantasei persone.	37 In al we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on board that ship.
38 Dopo aver mangiato a sazietà, alleggerirono la nave gettando il frumento nel mare.	38 When they had eaten what they wanted they lightened the ship by throwing the corn overboard intothe sea.
39 Quando si fece giorno, non riuscivano a riconoscere la terra, ma scorgevano un'insenatura con una spiaggia e là volevano, se fosse stato possibile, spingere la nave.	39 When day came they did not recognise the land, but they could make out a bay with a beach; theyplanned to run the ship aground on this if they could.
40 Staccarono le ancore tutt'intorno e le lasciarono andare a mare, allentando nello stesso tempo gli ormeggi dei timoni, e alzato l'artimone al vento tentavano d'approdare alla spiaggia.	40 They slipped the anchors and let them fal into the sea, and at the same time loosened the lashings ofthe rudders; then, hoisting the foresail to the wind, they headed for the beach.
41 Ma si imbatterono in un altifondo tra due correnti e fecero incagliare la nave: la prua, piantata nel fondo, rimaneva immobile, e la poppa veniva sfasciata dalla violenza delle onde.	41 But the cross-currents carried them into a shoal and the vessel ran aground. The bows were wedgedin and stuck fast, while the stern began to break up with the pounding of the waves.
42 I soldati presero la decisione di uccidere i prigionieri, perché qualcuno non sfuggisse a nuoto.	42 The soldiers planned to kil the prisoners for fear that any should swim off and escape.
43 Ma il centurione, volendo salvare Paolo, li impedì dall'attuare il loro proposito e comandò a quelli che erano in grado di nuotare di gettarsi per primi in mare e di raggiungere terra;	43 But the centurion was determined to bring Paul safely through and would not let them carry out theirplan. He gave orders that those who could swim should jump overboard first and so get ashore,
44 poi gli altri, chi su tavole, chi su qualche relitto della nave. E così tutti giunsero a terra incolumi.	44 and the rest fol ow either on planks or on pieces of wreckage. In this way it happened that al camesafe and sound to land.
