1 Il Signore disse a Mosè:	1 The LORD said to Moses,
2 "Manda uomini a esplorare la terra di Canaan, che io voglio dare ai figli d'Israele; ne invierete uno per ogni tribù dei loro padri, tutti dei loro capi".	2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
3 Mosè li inviò dal deserto di Paran, secondo le parole del Signore: erano tutti capi dei figli d'Israele.	3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
4 Questi sono i loro nomi: per la tribù di Ruben Sammua, figlio di Zaccur;	4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;
5 per la tribù di Simeone Safat, figlio di Cori;	5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;
6 per la tribù di Giuda Caleb, figlio di Iefunne;	6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;
7 per la tribù di Issacar Igheal, figlio di Giuseppe;	7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;

16 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè inviò a esplorare la terra. Mosè diede ad Osea, figlio di Nun, il nome di Giosuè.	16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
17 Mosè li inviò ad esplorare la terra di Canaan e disse loro: "Salite per il Negheb, e salite sulla montagna,	17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
18 per vedere la terra com'è e il popolo che vi abita, se forte o debole, poco o molto;	18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
19 com'è la terra che abita, se buona o cattiva, come sono le città in cui abita, se siano accampamenti o fortificazioni;	19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
20 com'è la terra grassa o magra, se ci sono alberi o no. Siate forti e portate dei frutti della terra". Quei giorni erano i giorni delle prime uve.	20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
21 Quelli salirono ad esplorare la terra dal deserto del Zin fino a Recob, sulla via di Camat.	21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
22 Salirono nel Negheb e arrivarono fino ad Ebron: là c'era Achiman, Sesai e Talmai, figli di Anak. Ebron era stata costruita sette anni prima di Tanis in Egitto.	22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23 Poi vennero fino alla valle di Escol e vi tagliarono un tralcio con un grappolo d'uva, che portarono con una stanga in due, con melagrane e fichi.	23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
24 Quel luogo si chiamò torrente Escol, a causa del grappolo che i figli d'Israele vi avevano tagliato.	24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
25 Tornarono dall'esplorazione della terra alla fine di quaranta giorni.	25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
26 Si presentarono a Mosè, Aronne e a tutta la comunità dei figli d'Israele, nel deserto di Paran, a Kades: riferirono l'accaduto a loro e a tutta la comunità e mostrarono il frutto della terra.	26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
27 Raccontarono: "Siamo arrivati nella terra dove ci avevi inviato ed effettivamente vi scorre latte e miele; questi sono i frutti.	27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.
28 Solo che il popolo che abita nella terra è forte e le città sono fortezze grandissime: vi vedemmo anche gli Anakiti.	28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
29 Gli Amaleciti abitano nella terra del Negheb, gli Hittiti, i Gebusei e gli Amorrei abitano sulla montagna, i Cananei abitano lungo il mare e lungo le rive del Giordano".	29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."
30 Solo Caleb fece tacere il popolo che mormorava contro Mosè e disse: "Saliamo e conquistiamola, perché lo possiamo".	30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
31 Ma gli uomini che erano saliti con lui dissero: "Non possiamo salire contro quel popolo, perché è più forte di noi".	31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
32 E screditarono davanti agl'Israeliti la terra che avevano esplorato dicendo: "La terra dove siamo passati per esplorarla è una terra che divora chi la abita, e tutto il popolo che vi abbiamo visto è di uomini di taglia.	32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
33 Là abbiamo visto i giganti, figli di Anak, della razza dei giganti, e ai nostri occhi eravamo come delle cavallette, così come lo eravamo ai loro occhi".	33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
