1 Eliu seguitò dicendo:	1 Then Elihu continued and said:
2 "Ascoltate, o saggi, le mie parole, e voi, dotti, prestatemi l'orecchio!	2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!
3 Poiché l'orecchio valuta i discorsi, come il palato assaggia il cibo.	3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.
4 Esaminiamo tra noi la questione, indaghiamo tra noi ciò che è bene.	4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.
5 Ora Giobbe ha affermato: "Sono innocente, ma Dio mi nega giustizia.	5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.
6 Nonostante la mia ragione, passo per bugiardo; una freccia mi ha colpito a morte, benché non abbia peccato".	6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."
7 Chi è come Giobbe, che beve il sarcasmo come acqua,	7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,
8 si associa ai malfattori e va in compagnia degli iniqui?	8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,
9 Infatti ha affermato: "L'uomo non guadagna nulla nel cercare il gradimento di Dio".	9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."
10 Perciò, uomini di senno, ascoltatemi! Lungi da Dio il fare il male e dall'Onnipotente la perfidia!	10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!
11 Invece egli rende all'uomo secondo le sue opere e tratta ciascuno secondo la sua condotta.	11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.
12 No, in verità, Dio non fa il male, e l'Onnipotente non viola il diritto.	12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.
13 E' forse un altro che gli ha affidato la terra, e un altro che lo ha incaricato del mondo intero?	13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?
14 Se egli non pensasse che a se stesso e ritirasse a sé il suo spirito e il suo respiro,	14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,
15 morirebbe all'istante ogni creatura e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere.	15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.
16 Se sei intelligente, ascolta questo, presta orecchio al suono delle mie parole!	16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!
17 Un nemico della giustizia potrebbe forse governare? Osi tu condannare il sommo Giusto?	17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,
18 Si dice forse ad un re: "Iniquo"? e ai grandi: "Malvagi"?	18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"
19 Egli non è parziale in favore dei prìncipi e non preferisce il ricco al povero, perché tutti sono opera delle sue mani.	19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;
20 In un istante essi muoiono nel cuore della notte; il popolo si agita ed essi spariscono, si rimuove il tiranno senza sforzo.	20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;
21 Perché Dio ha gli occhi sulla condotta dell'uomo e osserva tutti i suoi passi.	21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.
22 Non vi sono tenebre né oscurità, dove si possano nascondere i malfattori.	22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.
23 Poiché non si pone all'uomo un termine, perché compaia in giudizio davanti a Dio.	23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.
24 Senza fare inchiesta egli fiacca i potenti e mette altri al loro posto.	24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,
25 Poiché egli sventa le loro manovre; in una notte li travolge e sono schiacciati.	25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.
26 Come malvagi li colpisce alla vista di tutti.
27 Infatti essi si sono allontanati da lui, senza curarsi delle sue vie,	27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,
28 fino a far giungere verso di lui il grido dei poveri; ed egli udì il lamento degli oppressi.	28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.
29 Ma se resta impassibile, chi lo condannerà? Se nasconde la sua faccia, chi potrà vederlo? Egli pertanto veglia sui popoli come sui singoli,	29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?
30 non volendo che l'empio regni e che si pongano inciampi al popolo.
31 Si può dunque dire a Dio: "Porto la pena, senza aver fatto il male"?	31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.
32 Ciò che sfugge alla mia vista, mostramelo tu; se ho commesso il male, non lo farò più.	32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"
33 Dovrebbe egli retribuire secondo le tue norme, dato che tu rifiuti il suo giudizio? Poiché tu devi scegliere e non io, di' quanto sai!	33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.
34 Gli uomini di senno mi diranno, come ogni saggio che mi ascolta:	34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:
35 "Giobbe non parla con conoscenza di causa, e le sue parole sono prive di senno.	35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."
36 Sia dunque Giobbe esaminato a fondo, per le sue risposte degne di un malvagio,	36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;
37 poiché ha aggiunto la ribellione al peccato, si burla di noi e moltiplica contro Dio le sue parole".	37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.
