LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ora Giuda Maccabeo e i suoi compagni, introducendosi segretamente nei villaggi, chiamavano a sé i parenti e, raccolti quanti erano restati fermi nel giudaismo, formarono un gruppo di circa seimila persone.	1 Judas, otherwise known as Maccabaeus, and his companions made their way secretly among thevil ages, ral ying their fellow-countrymen; they recruited those who remained loyal to Judaism and assembledabout six thousand.
2 Supplicavano il Signore di riguardare il popolo da tutti calpestato, di aver pietà del tempio profanato dagli uomini empi,	2 They cal ed on the Lord to have regard for the people oppressed on al sides, to take pity on theTemple profaned by the godless,
3 d'aver compassione anche della città in rovina e prossima ad essere spianata, d'ascoltare il sangue che gridava verso di lui,	3 to have mercy on the city now being destroyed and level ed to the ground, to hear the blood of thevictims that cried aloud to him,
4 di ricordarsi del massacro iniquo degli innocenti bambini e di far vendetta delle bestemmie lanciate contro il suo nome.	4 to remember too the criminal slaughter of innocent babies and to avenge the blasphemies perpetratedagainst his name.
5 Organizzato il gruppo, Giuda era ormai irresistibile per i gentili, poiché l'ira di Dio si era cambiata in misericordia.	5 As soon as Maccabaeus had an organised force, he at once proved invincible to the foreigners, theLord's anger having turned into compassion.
6 Giungendo all'improvviso, incendiava città e villaggi, occupava posizioni favorevoli e metteva in fuga non pochi nemici.	6 Making surprise attacks on towns and villages, he fired them; he captured favourable positions andinflicted very heavy losses on the enemy,
7 Per queste incursioni egli sceglieva soprattutto la complicità della notte. La fama della sua bravura, intanto, si diffondeva dappertutto.	7 general y availing himself of the cover of night for such enterprises. The fame of his valour spread farand wide.
8 Filippo, vedendo che quest'uomo a poco a poco andava progredendo e che riportava successi sempre più frequenti, scrisse a Tolomeo, stratega della Celesiria e della Fenicia, di venirgli in aiuto per gli affari del re.	8 When Philip saw Judas was making steady progress and winning more and more frequent successes,he wrote to Ptolemy, the general officer commanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, asking for reinforcements inthe royal interest.
9 Costui scelse subito Nicànore, figlio di Patroclo e uno dei primi amici del re, e postolo al comando di non meno di ventimila uomini di ogni nazione, lo inviò a sterminare tutta la razza dei Giudei. A lui associò pure Gorgia, stratega di professione, che aveva esperienza di cose di guerra.	9 Ptolemy chose Nicanor son of Patroclus, one of the king's First Friends, and sent him without delay atthe head of an international force of at least twenty thousand men to exterminate the entire Jewish race. As hisassociate he appointed Gorgias, a professional general of wide military experience.
10 Nicànore si era proposto di ricavare dalla vendita dei Giudei fatti schiavi la somma di duemila talenti per il tributo che il re doveva ai Romani.	10 Nicanor for his part proposed, by the sale of Jewish prisoners of war, to raise the two thousand talentsof tribute money owed by the king to the Romans.
11 Perciò inviò subito nelle città del litorale l'invito a comprare schiavi giudei, promettendo di cederne novanta per un talento, non aspettandosi che la giustizia dell'Onnipotente stesse per raggiungerlo.	11 He lost no time in sending the seaboard towns an invitation to come and buy Jewish manpower,promising delivery of ninety head for one talent; but he did not reckon on the judgement from the Almighty thatwas soon to overtake him.
12 La notizia della spedizione di Nicànore pervenne a Giuda; ma quando questi comunicò ai suoi compagni l'avvicinarsi dell'esercito,	12 When news reached Judas of Nicanor's advance, he warned his men of the enemy's approach,
13 quelli che avevano paura e quelli che non confidavano nella giustizia di Dio cercarono scampo altrove e si allontanarono;	13 whereupon the cowardly ones and those who lacked confidence in the justice of God took to theirheels and ran away.
14 gli altri, invece, vendevano quanto era loro rimasto e al medesimo tempo pregavano il Signore di liberare quelli che dall'empio Nicànore erano stati venduti già prima dello scontro:	14 The rest sold al their remaining possessions, at the same time praying the Lord to deliver them fromthe godless Nicanor, who had sold them even in advance of any encounter-
15 se non per loro stessi, almeno per le alleanze con i loro padri e per l'invocazione del suo augusto e magnifico nome sopra di essi.	15 if not for their own sakes, then at least out of consideration for the covenants made with theirancestors, and because they themselves bore his sacred and majestic name.
16 Il Maccabeo, allora, radunati i suoi in numero di seimila, li esortava a non spaventarsi davanti ai nemici e a non temere la moltitudine dei gentili che ingiustamente li aggredivano, ma a combattere eroicamente,	16 Maccabaeus marshal ed his men, who numbered about six thousand, and exhorted them not to bedismayed at the enemy or discouraged at the vast horde of gentiles wickedly advancing against them, but tofight bravely,
17 tenendo davanti agli occhi l'oltraggio da essi compiuto ingiustamente contro il santo luogo, l'ingiuria della città vilipesa e l'abolizione dell'ordinamento politico degli antenati.	17 keeping before their eyes the outrage committed by them against the holy place and the infamous andscornful treatment inflicted on the city, not to mention the destruction of their traditional way of life.
18 Disse: "Quelli confidano nelle armi e nella loro audacia, noi invece confidiamo in Dio onnipotente, che può abbattere con un solo cenno quelli che marciano contro di noi e il mondo intero".	18 'They may put their trust in their weapons and their exploits,' he said, 'but our confidence is in almightyGod, who is able with a single nod to overthrow both those marching on us and the whole world with them.'
19 Ricordò loro i soccorsi ricevuti dai loro antenati, soprattutto quello contro Sennàcherib, quando perirono centottantacinquemila uomini,	19 He reminded them of the occasions on which their ancestors had received help: that time when, underSennacherib, a hundred and eighty-five thousand men had perished;
20 e la battaglia che ebbe luogo in Babilonia contro i Galati, quando ottomila Giudei con quattromila Macedoni si gettarono tutti nel combattimento, ma essendosi poi i Macedoni trovati in difficoltà, gli ottomila annientarono centoventimila nemici, con l'aiuto loro venuto dal cielo, riportandone un grande vantaggio.	20 that time in Babylonia when in the battle with the Galatians the Jewish combatants numbered onlyeight thousand, with four thousand Macedonians, yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eightthousand had destroyed a hundred and twenty thousand, thanks to the help they had received from Heaven, andhad taken great booty as a result.
21 Resili in questo modo audaci e pronti a morire per le leggi e per la patria, divise in qualche modo l'esercito in quattro parti,	21 Having so roused their courage by these words that they were ready to die for the laws and theircountry, he then divided his army into four,

24 Fattosi l'Onnipotente loro alleato, uccisero più di novemila nemici, ferirono e mutilarono nelle membra la maggior parte dei soldati di Nicànore e costrinsero tutti alla fuga.	24 With the Almighty for their ally they slaughtered over nine thousand of the enemy, wounded andcrippled the greater part of Nicanor's army and put them al to flight.
25 S'impadronirono del denaro di coloro che erano venuti per comperarli; li inseguirono a lungo, ma poi, pressati dall'ora, tornarono indietro.	25 The money of their prospective purchasers fell into their hands. After pursuing them for a good while,they turned back, since time was pressing:
26 Si era, infatti, alla vigilia del sabato, e per questa ragione non si attardarono ad inseguirli.	26 it was the eve of the Sabbath, and for that reason they did not prolong their pursuit.
27 Raccolte le armi e prese le spoglie dei nemici, passarono il sabato benedicendo e lodando più che mai il Signore che li aveva salvati in tale giorno e aveva iniziato a usare misericordia con essi.	27 They col ected the enemy's weapons and stripped them of their spoils, and because of the Sabbatheven more heartily blessed and praised the Lord, who had saved them and who had chosen that day for the firstmanifestation of his compassion.
28 Passato il sabato, distribuirono parte del bottino ai danneggiati, alle vedove e agli orfani, mentre essi e i loro figli si divisero il resto.	28 When the Sabbath was over, they distributed some of the booty among the victims of the persecutionand the widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children.
29 Compiute queste cose, fecero una supplica in comune pregando il Signore misericordioso di riconciliarsi interamente con i suoi servi.	29 They then joined in public supplication, imploring the merciful Lord to be ful y reconciled with hisservants.
30 In seguito, scontratisi con gli uomini di Timoteo e di Bàcchide, ne uccisero più di ventimila, s'impadronirono saldamente di alte fortezze e divisero l'abbondante bottino in parti uguali tra se stessi, i danneggiati, gli orfani, le vedove e anche i vecchi.	30 They also chal enged the forces of Timotheus and Bacchides and destroyed over twenty thousand ofthem, gaining possession of several high fortresses. They divided their enormous booty into two equal shares,one for themselves, the other for the victims of the persecution and the orphans and widows, not forgetting theaged.
31 Poi, raccolte le armi e riposto diligentemente tutto in luoghi sicuri, trasportarono il resto del bottino a Gerusalemme.	31 They carefully col ected the enemy's weapons and stored them in suitable places. The rest of thespoils they took to Jerusalem.
32 Uccisero pure il filarca degli uomini di Timoteo, uomo scelleratissimo che aveva molto afflitto i Giudei;	32 They kil ed the tribal chieftain on Timotheus' staff, an extremely wicked man who had done great harmto the Jews.
33 e mentre in patria celebravano la vittoria, diedero fuoco a quelli che avevano incendiato le porte sacre, compreso Callìstene che si era rifugiato in una casa e che così ricevette la giusta mercede della sua empietà.	33 In the course of their victory celebrations in Jerusalem, they burned the men who had fired the HolyGates; with Cal isthenes they had taken refuge in one smal house; so these received a fitting reward for theirsacrilege.
34 Lo scelleratissimo Nicànore, che aveva condotto mille mercanti per la vendita dei Giudei,	34 The triple-dyed scoundrel Nicanor, who had brought the thousand merchants to buy the Jews,
35 umiliato, con l'aiuto del Signore, da coloro che da lui erano reputati un nulla, deposta la sua splendida veste e reso il suo aspetto selvaggio come quello di un fuggitivo, attraverso i campi giunse ad Antiochia, straordinariamente felice per la distruzione dell'esercito.	35 finding himself with the Lord's help humbled by men he had himself reckoned as of very little account,stripped off his robes of state, and made his way across country unaccompanied, like a runaway slave, reachingAntioch by a singular stroke of fortune, since his army had been destroyed.
36 Intanto colui che si era impegnato a pagare il tributo ai Romani con la vendita dei prigionieri di Gerusalemme, andava dicendo che i Giudei avevano un difensore e che gli stessi Giudei erano invulnerabili perché seguivano le leggi da lui stabilite.	36 Thus the man who had promised the Romans to make good their tribute money by sel ing theprisoners from Jerusalem, bore witness that the Jews had a defender and that they were in consequenceinvulnerable, since they fol owed the laws which that defender had ordained.
