1 Dopo uno spazio di tre anni giunse notizia agli uomini di Giuda che Demetrio, figlio di Selèuco, sbarcato nel porto di Tripoli con un forte esercito e una flotta,	1 Three years later, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius, son of Seleucus, had sailed into the port of Tripolis with a powerful army and a fleet,
2 si era impadronito della regione, dopo aver fatto sparire Antioco e il di lui tutore Lisia.	2 and that he had occupied the country, after doing away with Antiochus and his guardian Lysias.
3 Or un certo A'lcimo, che in precedenza era divenuto sommo sacerdote ma volontariamente si era contaminato al tempo della rivolta, avendo compreso che per lui non vi era in alcun modo salvezza né più possibilità d'accedere al santo altare,	3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, who had willfully incurred defilement at the time of the revolt, realized that there was no way for him to salvage his position and regain access to the holy altar.
4 andò dal re Demetrio verso l'anno 151 e gli offrì una corona d'oro e una palma, oltre ai soliti ramoscelli d'olivo del tempio. Per quel giorno rimase quieto.	4 So he went to King Demetrius in the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with a gold crown and a palm branch, as well as some of the customary olive branches from the temple. On that occasion he kept quiet.
5 Ma, colta l'occasione propizia alla sua follia quando da Demetrio fu convocato a consiglio e interrogato in quale disposizione e volontà stessero i Giudei, a tale riguardo rispose:	5 But he found an opportunity to further his mad scheme when he was invited to the council by Demetrius and questioned about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews. He replied:
6 "Coloro dei Giudei che sono chiamati Asidei, alla cui testa è Giuda Maccabeo, fomentano la guerra e la sedizione, non permettendo al regno di ritrovare la calma.	6 "Those Jews called Hasideans, led by Judas Maccabeus, are warmongers, who stir up sedition and keep the kingdom from enjoying peace and quiet.
7 Proprio per questo, privato della dignità degli avi, e cioè del sommo sacerdozio, io ora sono venuto qui:	7 For this reason, now that I am deprived of my ancestral dignity, that is to say, the high priesthood, I have come here--
8 in primo luogo pensando sinceramente agl'interessi del re e poi anche preoccupandomi dei miei concittadini, poiché per sconsideratezza delle dette persone tutta la nostra gente soffre non poco.	8 first, out of my genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of consideration for my own countrymen, since our entire nation is suffering great affliction from the unreasonable conduct of the people just mentioned.
9 Tu, o re, che conosci bene ognuna di queste cose, provvedi al paese e alla nostra gente minacciata, in conformità a quell'affabile umanità che hai verso tutti.	9 When you have informed yourself in detail on these matters, O king, act in the interest of our country and its hard-pressed people with the same gracious consideration that you show toward all.
10 Infatti, finché Giuda rimane in vita, è impossibile che la situazione ritorni pacifica".	10 As long as Judas is around, it is impossible for the state to enjoy peace."
11 Appena egli ebbe detto tali cose, gli altri amici che nutrivano rancori verso Giuda si affrettarono ad infiammare Demetrio.	11 When he had said this, the other Friends who were hostile to Judas quickly added fuel to Demetrius' indignation.
12 Questi, perciò, scelto subito Nicànore, che era divenuto elefantarca, lo nominò stratega della Giudea e ve lo inviò,	12 The king immediately chose Nicanor, who had been in command of the elephants, and appointed him governor of Judea. He sent him off
13 dandogli ordine di far sparire Giuda, di disperdere gli uomini che erano con lui e di costituire A'lcimo sommo sacerdote del grande tempio.	13 with orders to put Judas to death, to disperse his followers, and to set up Alcimus as high priest of the great temple.
14 I gentili della Giudea, che erano sfuggiti a Giuda, in massa si unirono allora a Nicànore, stimando che le sventure e le disgrazie dei Giudei sarebbero tornate a loro proprio vantaggio.	14 The Gentiles from Judea, who would have banished Judas, came flocking to Nicanor, thinking that the misfortunes and calamities of the Jews would mean prosperity for themselves.
15 Avuta notizia della spedizione di Nicànore e dell'aggressione dei gentili, i Giudei, cosparsisi di cenere, fecero una supplica a colui che per l'eternità aveva costituito il suo popolo e che con apparizioni aveva sempre sostenuto coloro che sono sua porzione.	15 When the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the Gentiles were rallying to him, they sprinkled themselves with earth and prayed to him who established his people forever, and who always comes to the aid of his heritage.
16 Quindi, al comando del loro capo, subito si mossero di lì e si scontrarono col nemico presso il villaggio di Dessau.	16 At their leader's command, they set out at once and came upon the enemy at the village of Adasa.
17 Simone, fratello di Giuda, si era già spinto contro Nicànore; ma, a causa dell'arrivo improvviso degli avversari, lentamente aveva dovuto cedere.	17 Judas' brother Simon had engaged Nicanor, but because of the sudden appearance of the enemy suffered a slight repulse.
18 Nondimeno Nicànore, venuto a conoscere il valore che possedevano gli uomini di Giuda e il coraggio con cui essi combattevano per gli interessi della patria, temeva di decidere la questione con spargimento di sangue.	18 However, when Nicanor heard of the valor of Judas and his men, and the great courage with which they fought for their country, he shrank from deciding the issue by bloodshed.
19 Perciò inviò Posidonio, Teòdoto e Mattatia a dare e ricevere la destra.	19 So he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to arrange an agreement.
20 Fatta un'ampia discussione in proposito, il capo ne diede comunicazione alle truppe e con voto manifestato per suffragio queste assentirono agli accordi.	20 After a long discussion of the terms, each leader communicated them to his troops; and when general agreement was expressed, they assented to the treaty.
21 Pertanto fissarono un giorno nel quale incontrarsi privatamente in uno stesso luogo. Dall'una e dall'altra parte avanzò una lettiga e si disposero i seggi.	21 A day was set on which the leaders would meet by themselves. From each side a chariot came forward and thrones were set in place.
22 Intanto Giuda aveva disposto degli uomini armati nei luoghi più adatti per paura che improvvisamente dai nemici fosse compiuta qualche cattiva azione. Conclusero così l'incontro in pieno accordo.	22 Judas had posted armed men in readiness at suitable points for fear that the enemy might suddenly carry out some treacherous plan. But the conference was held in the proper way.
23 Nicànore poi si trattenne a Gerusalemme e non fece nulla fuori posto. Licenziò pure le folle, che erano state raccolte come greggi.	23 Nicanor stayed on in Jerusalem, where he did nothing out of place. He got rid of the throngs of ordinary people who gathered around him;
24 Aveva continuamente Giuda con sé ed era cordialmente affezionato a quest'uomo.	24 but he always kept Judas in his company, for he had a cordial affection for the man.
25 Lo esortò a sposarsi e a procreare figli. Giuda si sposò, restò tranquillo e condusse vita comune.	25 He urged him to marry and have children; so Judas married, settled down, and shared the common life.
26 A'lcimo, venuto a sapere della benevolenza dell'uno per l'altro, dopo essersi procurato una copia dei patti conclusi, si recò da Demetrio e accusò Nicànore di avere sentimenti contrari al governo. Egli, infatti, aveva designato a suo successore Giuda, il perturbatore del regno.	26 When Alcimus saw their friendship for each other, he took the treaty that had been made, went to Demetrius, and said that Nicanor was plotting against the state, and that he had appointed Judas, the conspirator against the kingdom, to be his successor.
27 Il re, adirato ed eccitato dalle calunnie di quello scellerato, scrisse a Nicànore dichiarandogli che egli non sopportava i detti patti e ordinandogli d'inviare subito ad Antiochia il Maccabeo in catene.	27 Stirred up by the villain's calumnies, the king became enraged. He wrote to Nicanor, stating that he was displeased with the treaty, and ordering him to send Maccabeus as a prisoner to Antioch without delay.
28 Come gli giunsero questi ordini, Nicànore ne rimase costernato e sopportava di malavoglia di dover violare le convenzioni, non avendo quell'uomo fatto nulla di male.	28 When this message reached Nicanor he was dismayed, for he hated to break his agreement with a man who had done no wrong.
29 Poiché, tuttavia, non era possibile agire contro il re, cercava l'opportunità di eseguire l'ordine con uno stratagemma.	29 However, there was no way of opposing the king, so he watched for an opportunity to carry out this order by a stratagem.
30 Ora il Maccabeo, avendo osservato che Nicànore si comportava con lui in modo più austero e che nei consueti incontri si mostrava piuttosto aspro, pensò che tale austerità non proveniva da qualcosa di buono. Perciò, radunati non pochi dei suoi uomini, si sottrasse a Nicànore.	30 But Maccabeus noticed that Nicanor was becoming cool in his dealings with him, and acting with unaccustomed rudeness when they met; he concluded that this coldness betokened no good. So he gathered together a large number of his men, and went into hiding from Nicanor.
31 Quando l'altro si accorse di essere stato abilmente giocato da Giuda, raggiunse il sublime e santo tempio, mentre i sacerdoti compivano i consueti sacrifici, e comandò di consegnargli quest'uomo.	31 When Nicanor realized that he had been disgracefully outwitted by the man, he went to the great and holy temple, at a time when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrender Judas.
32 Gli dichiararono con giuramento che non sapevano dove poteva essere il ricercato.	32 As they declared under oath that they did not know where the wanted man was,
33 Egli, allora, stesa la destra verso il tempio, fece questo giuramento: "Se non mi consegnate Giuda in catene, raderò al suolo questa dimora di Dio, abbatterò l'altare e innalzerò qui uno splendido tempio a Dioniso".	33 he raised his right hand toward the temple and swore this oath: "If you do not hand Judas over to me as prisoner, I will level this shrine of God to the ground; I will tear down the altar, and erect here a splendid temple to Dionysus."
34 Ciò detto, se ne andò. Allora i sacerdoti, stese le mani al cielo, incominciarono ad invocare colui che è stato sempre difensore della nostra gente, dicendo: "	34 With these words he went away. The priests stretched out their hands toward heaven, calling upon the unfailing defender of our nation in these words:
35 Tu, o Signore, che non hai bisogno di nessuna di tutte le cose, hai voluto che vi fosse in mezzo a noi un tempio per la tua dimora.	35 "Lord of all, though you are in need of nothing, you have approved of a temple for your dwelling place among us.
36 Ora, perciò, o Signore, santo di ogni santità, custodisci per sempre incontaminata questa casa, che da poco è stata purificata".	36 Therefore, O holy One, Lord of all holiness, preserve forever undefiled this house, which has been so recently purified."
37 Or un certo Razis, degli anziani di Gerusalemme, fu indicato a Nicànore come uomo amante della città e di ottima fama, che per la sua bontà era chiamato padre dei Giudei.	37 A certain Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor as a patriot. A man highly regarded, he was called a father of the Jews because of his love for them.
38 Egli, infatti, nei precedenti giorni della rivolta aveva subìto una condanna per giudaismo e si era dato, corpo ed anima, con tutta la costanza possibile alla causa dello stesso giudaismo.	38 In the early days of the revolt, he had been convicted of Judaism, and had risked body and life in his ardent zeal for it.
39 Nicànore, volendo rendere manifesta l'ostilità che nutriva verso i Giudei, mandò più di cinquecento soldati ad arrestarlo,	39 Nicanor, to show his detestation of the Jews, sent more than five hundred soldiers to arrest him.
40 poiché credeva che arrestando lui avrebbe inflitto un grave danno agli altri.	40 He thought that by arresting such a man he would deal the Jews a hard blow.
41 Le truppe stavano già per occupare la torre e forzavano la porta del cortile, dando ordine di portare del fuoco per appiccarlo alle porte, quando Razis, stretto da ogni parte, si gettò sulla sua spada,	41 But when these troops, on the point of capturing the tower, were forcing the outer gate and calling for fire to set the door ablaze, Razis, now caught on all sides, turned his sword against himself,
42 preferendo morire nobilmente piuttosto che cadere nelle mani di quegli scellerati ed essere oltraggiato in modo indegno della sua nobiltà.	42 preferring to die nobly rather than fall into the hands of vile men and suffer outrages unworthy of his noble birth.
43 Ma poiché, nella fretta della lotta, il colpo non era andato al punto giusto e le truppe erano già penetrate dentro le porte, corse coraggiosamente sulle mura e virilmente si precipitò sulla folla.	43 In the excitement of the struggle he failed to strike exactly. So while the troops rushed in through the doors, he gallantly ran up to the top of the wall and with manly courage threw himself down into the crowd.
44 Questa, subito indietreggiando, fece largo e così egli venne a cadere nel mezzo dello spazio vuoto.	44 But as they quickly drew back and left an opening, he fell into the middle of the empty space.
45 Respirando ancora e infiammato d'ardore, si rialzò, mentre il sangue gli scorreva abbondantemente e le ferite lo tormentavano; di corsa passò in mezzo alla folla e salito su una roccia scoscesa,	45 Still breathing, and inflamed with anger, he got up and ran through the crowd, with blood gushing from his frightful wounds.
46 già completamente esangue, si strappò gli intestini, li prese con ambedue le mani e li lanciò sulla folla, invocando il padrone della vita e dello spirito di restituirglieli di nuovo. In questo modo egli passò di vita.	46 Then, standing on a steep rock, as he lost the last of his blood, he tore out his entrails and flung them with both hands into the crowd, calling upon the Lord of life and of spirit to give these back to him again. Such was the manner of his death.
