LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Tutto il popolo di Giuda prese Ozia, che aveva sedici anni, e lo proclamò re al posto di suo padre Amazia.	1 Al the people then chose Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in succession to hisfather Amaziah.
2 Egli ricostruì Elat, che ricondusse sotto il dominio di Giuda, dopo che il re si era addormentato con i suoi padri.	2 It was he who rebuilt Elath, recovering it for Judah, after the king had fal en asleep with his ancestors.
3 Quando divenne re, Ozia aveva sedici anni; regnò cinquantadue anni in Gerusalemme; il nome di sua madre era Iecolia, da Gerusalemme.	3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when he came to the throne and he reigned for fifty-two years inJerusalem. His mother's name was Jecoliah of Jerusalem.
4 Fece ciò che è retto agli occhi del Signore, come aveva fatto Amazia, suo padre.	4 He did what is pleasing to Yahweh, just as his father Amaziah had done;
5 Cercò Dio finché visse Zaccaria, che gli aveva insegnato il timore di Dio; finché ricercò il Signore, Dio gli diede successo.	5 he consulted God throughout the lifetime of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. And aslong as he consulted Yahweh, God gave him success.
6 Uscì in guerra contro i Filistei e smantellò le mura di Gat, di Iabne e di Asdod; costruì piazzeforti nella regione di Asdod e dei Filistei.	6 He went on campaign against the Philistines, demolished the wal s of Gath, the wal s of Jabneh andthe wal s of Ashdod, and built towns in the area of Ashdod and elsewhere in Philistine territory.
7 Dio gli venne in aiuto contro i Filistei, contro gli Arabi abitanti in Gur-Baal e contro i Meuniti.	7 God helped him against the Philistines, the Arabs living at Gur-Baal and the Meunites.
8 Gli Ammoniti pagavano tributo a Ozia; la sua fama si estese fino alla frontiera dell'Egitto, perché era diventato molto potente.	8 The Meunites paid tribute to Uzziah and his fame spread as far as the frontier of Egypt, since he keptgrowing stronger and stronger.
9 Ozia costruì torri in Gerusalemme sulla porta dell'Angolo, sulla porta della Valle e sul Cantone, fortificandolo.	9 Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem, at the Corner Gate, at the Val ey Gate and at the Angle, and fortifiedthem.
10 Costruì torri anche nel deserto e scavò molte cisterne, perché possedeva numeroso bestiame nella Sefela e nell'altipiano; aveva contadini e vignaioli sui monti e sulle colline, perché egli amava l'agricoltura.	10 He built towers in the desert too, and dug many storage-wel s, for he had large herds in the lowlandsand on the tableland, and farmers and vine dressers in the hil s and fertile lands: for he loved the land.
11 Ozia aveva anche un esercito addestrato per la guerra, pronto a combattere, disposto in schiere secondo il numero del loro censimento compiuto dallo scriba Ieiel, dall'ispettore Maaseia, agli ordini di Anania, uno degli ufficiali del re.	11 Uzziah had a trained army ready to go on campaign, organised in companies manned as detailed bythe scribe Jeiel and the staff-officer Maaseiah, and commanded by Hananiah one of the king's generals.
12 Il numero totale dei capi dei casati di quei prodi guerrieri era di duemilaseicento.	12 The heads of families of the military champions numbered in al two thousand six hundred.
13 Da loro dipendeva una forza militare di trecentosettemilacinquecento uomini ben addestrati, di grande valore nell'aiutare il re contro il nemico.	13 Under them was an army of three hundred and seven thousand five hundred men ready for war, apowerful force to support the king against the enemy.
14 Ozia forniva loro, cioè a tutto l'esercito, scudi e lance, elmi, corazze, archi e pietre per le fionde.	14 Uzziah provided shields, spears, helmets, armour, bows and sling-stones for the entire army.
15 In Gerusalemme egli costruì alcune macchine inventate da un esperto per collocarle sulle torri e sugli angoli, per scagliare frecce e grandi pietre. La sua fama si diffuse lontano, perché fu straordinariamente aiutato fino a diventare potente.	15 He also erected expertly contrived devices for the towers and angles of Jerusalem from which toshoot arrows and drop large stones. His fame spread far and wide, for he was miraculously helped to becomestrong.
16 Ma diventato potente, il suo cuore si insuperbì fino a corrompersi. Divenne infedele verso il Signore, suo Dio, ed entrò nel santuario del Signore per bruciare incenso sull'altare.	16 But once he was strong, his arrogance was such that it led to his downfall; he was unfaithful toYahweh his God by entering the Temple of Yahweh to burn incense on the altar of incense.
17 Dopo di lui entrò il sacerdote Azaria, con ottanta sacerdoti del Signore, uomini eccellenti.	17 Azariah the priest with eight brave priests of Yahweh followed him in;
18 Essi si opposero a Ozia dicendogli: "Non è compito tuo, o Ozia, offrire incenso al Signore, ma dei sacerdoti figli di Aronne, consacrati per offrire l'incenso. Esci dal santuario, perché hai prevaricato e il Signore Dio non ti ha dato questo onore".	18 confronting King Uzziah, they said to him, 'Uzziah, you are not al owed to burn incense to Yahweh;only the Aaronite priests consecrated for the purpose may burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have beenunfaithful and wil have no honour from Yahweh God.'
19 Ozia, che aveva in mano l'incensiere per offrire l'incenso, si adirò. Ma mentre si adirava contro i sacerdoti, sulla sua fronte spuntò la lebbra, davanti ai sacerdoti, nel tempio del Signore, presso l'altare dell'incenso.	19 Uzziah, censer in hand to burn incense, flew into a rage. But while he was raging at the priests, avirulent skin-disease broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests, in the Temple of Yahweh, there bythe altar of incense.
20 Il sommo sacerdote Azaria e i sacerdoti si volsero verso di lui ed ecco la lebbra sulla sua fronte. Lo fecero uscire in fretta di là, anzi egli stesso si precipitò per uscire, perché era stato colpito dal Signore.	20 When Azariah the chief priest and al the other priests turned towards him, there was skin-disease onhis forehead and they hurried him outside, and he himself was equal y anxious to get out, because Yahweh hadstruck him.
21 Il re Ozia rimase lebbroso fino al giorno della sua morte e abitò come tale in una casa di isolamento, perché era stato escluso dal tempio del Signore. Suo figlio Iotam dirigeva la reggia e governava il popolo del paese.	21 King Uzziah was afflicted with skin-disease til his dying day. Because of this, he lived confined to hisroom and was excluded from the Temple of Yahweh, while Jotham his son, who was master of the palace,governed the people of the country.
22 Il resto delle imprese di Ozia, le prime come le ultime, sono state descritte dal profeta Isaia, figlio di Amoz.	22 The rest of the history of Uzziah, from first to last, has been written by the prophet Isaiah son ofAmoz.
23 Ozia si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu seppellito nel campo presso le tombe dei re, perché si diceva: "E' un lebbroso". Al suo posto divenne re Iotam, suo figlio.	23 Then Uzziah fell asleep with his ancestors and was buried with them in the field beside the burialground of the kings since, it was reasoned, he was afflicted with virulent skin-disease. His son Jotham thensucceeded him.
