1 Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.	1 Allora adunque Pilato prese Gesù, e lo flagellò.
2 And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe;	2 E i soldati, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sulla sua testa: e lo copriron con una veste di porpora.
3 they came up to him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck him with their hands.	3 E si accostavano a lui, e dicevano: Dio ti salvi, Re de' Giudei: e davangli degli schiaffi.
4 Pilate went out again, and said to them, "See, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no crime in him."	4 Uscì adunque di nuovo fuori Pilato, e disse loro: Ecco, che io ve lo meno fuori, affinchè intendiate, che non trovo in lui reato alcuno.
5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!"	5 E uscì fuora Gesù portando la corona di spine, e la veste di porpora. E disse loro (Pilato): Ecco l'uomo.
6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him."	6 Ma visto che l'ebbero i Pontefici, e i ministri, alzarono le voci, dicendo Crocifiggi, crocifiggilo. Disse loro Pilato: Prendetelo voi, e crocifiggetelo: imperocché io non trovo in lui reato.
7 The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God."	7 Gli risposero i Giudei: Noi abbiamo la legge, e secondo la legge dee morire perché si è fatto Figliuolo di Dio.
8 When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid;	8 Quando udì Pilato queste parole, si intimidì maggiormente.
9 he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer.	9 Ed entrò nuovamente nel pretorio, e disse a Gesù: Donde sei tu? Ma Gesù non gli diede risposta.
10 Pilate therefore said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?"	10 Dissegli perciò Pilato: Non parli con me? Non sai, che sta nelle mie mani il crocifiggerti, e sta nelle mie mani il liberarti?
11 Jesus answered him, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin."	11 Rispose Gesù: Non avresti potere, alcuno sopra di me, se non ti fosse stato dato di sopra. Per questo colui, che mi ti ha dato nelle mani, è reo di più, gran peccato.
12 Upon this Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend; every one who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar."	12 Da indi in poi cercava Pilato di liberarlo; ma i Giudei alzavan le strida, dicendo: Se liberi costui, non sei amico di Cesare: dappoiché chiunque si fa re, fa contro a Cesare.
13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha.	13 Pilato adunque, sentito questo discorso, menò fuori Gesù: e si pose a sedere sul tribunale nel luogo detto Litostrotos, e in Ebreo Gabbata.
14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"	14 (Ed era la Parasceve della Pasqua, e circa la sesta ora), e disse a' Giudei: Ecco il vostro Re.
15 They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."	15 Ma essi gridavano: Togli, togli, crocifiggilo. Disse loro Pilato: Crocifiggerò io il vostro Re? Gli risposero i Pontefici: Non abbiamo re fuori di Cesare.
16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.	16 Allora adunque lo diede nelle lor mani, perché fosse crocifisso. Presero pertanto Gesù, e lo menarono via.
17 So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha.	17 Ed egli portando la sua croce, s'incamminò verso il luogo detto del Cranio, in Ebraico Golgotha:
18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.	18 Dove crocifissero lui, e con lui due altri, uno di qua, e uno di là, e Gesù nel mezzo.
19 Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."	19 E scrìsse di più Pilato un cartello, e lo pose sopra la croce. Ed eravi scrìtto: GESU' NAZZARENO RE DE' GIUDEI.
20 Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.	20 Or questo cartello lo lesserò molti Giudei: perché era vicino alla città il luogo, dove Gesù fu crocifisso. Ed era scritto in Ebraico, in Greco, e in latino.
21 The chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews.'"	21 Dicevan però a Pilato i Pontefici de' Giudei: Non iscrivere Re de' Giudei: ma che costui ha detto: sono Re de' Giudei.
22 Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."	22 Rispose Pilato: Quel, che ho scritto, l'ho scritto.
23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom;	23 I soldati poi, crocifisso che ebber Gesù, presero le sue vesti (e ne fecer quattro parti, una per ciasoun soldato), e la tonaca. Or la tonaca era senza cuciture, tessuta tutta dalla parte superiore in giù.
24 so they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be." This was to fulfill the scripture, "They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots."	24 Dissero perciò, tra loro: Non la dividiamo, ma tiriamo a sorte, a chi abbia a toccare. Affinchè si adempisse la Scrittura, che dice: Si diviser tra loro le mie vestimenta: e tirarono a sorte la mia veste. Tali cose adunque fecero i soldati.
25 So the soldiers did this. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.	25 Ma vicino: sulla croce di Gesù stavano la sua Madre, e la sorella, di sua madre, Maria di Cleofa, e Maria Maddalena.
26 When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"	26 Gesù adunque veduto avendo la Madre, e il discepolo da lui amato, che era dappresso, disse alla Madre sua: Donna, ecco il tuo figliuolo.
27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.	27 Di poi disse al discepolo: Eccola la madre tua. E da quel punto il discepolo la prese con seco.
28 After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the scripture), "I thirst."	28 Dopo di ciò conoscendo Gesù, che tutto era adempito, affinchè si adempisse la Scrittura, disse: Un sete.
29 A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth.	29 Era stato quivi posto un vaso pieno di aceto. Onde quegli inzuppata una spugna nell'aceto, e avvoltolo attorno all'issopo, lo presentarono alla sua bocca.
30 When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.	30 Gesù, adunque preso che ebbe l'aceto, disse: E' compito. E chinato il capo, rese lo spirito.
31 Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.	31 Ma i Giudei, affinchè non restassero su la croce i corpi nel sabato, giacché era la Parasceve (conciossiachè era grande quel giorno di sabato), pregarono Pilato, che fossero ad essi rotte le gambe, e fossero tolti via.
32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him;	32 Andaron pertanto i soldati; e rupper le gambe al primo, e all'altro, che era stato crocifisso con lui.
33 but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.	33 Ma quando furono a Gesù, quando videro, che era già morto, non gli ruppero le gambe:
34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.	34 Ma uno de' soldati aprì il di lui fianco con una lancia, e subito nè usci sangue, e acqua.
35 He who saw it has borne witness--his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth--that you also may believe.	35 E chi vide, lo ha attestato: ed è vera la sua testimonianza. Ed egli sa, che dice il vero, affinchè voi pure crediate.
36 For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of him shall be broken."	36 Imperocché tali cose sono avvenute, affinché si adempisse la Scrittura: Non romperete nissuna delle sue ossa.
37 And again another scripture says, "They shall look on him whom they have pierced."	37 E parimenti un'altra Scrittura dice: Volgerai; gli sguardi a colui, che hanno trafitto.
38 After this Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away his body.	38 Dopo di ciò Giuseppe da Arimathea (discepolo di Gesù, ma occulto per timor de' Giudei) pregò Pilato per prendersi il corpo di Gesù. E Pilato gliel permise. Andò adunque, e prese il corpo di Gesù.
39 Nicodemus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds' weight.	39 Venne anche Nicodemo (quegli, che la prima volta andò da Gesù di notte) portando di una mistura di mirra, e di aloè, quasi cento libbre.
40 They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.	40 Preser dunque il corpo di Gesù, e lo avvolsero in lenzuoli di lino, ponendovi gli aromi, come dagli Ebrei si costuma nelle sepolture.
41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid.	41 Era nel luogo, dove egli fu crocifisso, un orto: e nell'orto un monumento nuovo, nel quale non era mai stato posto nissuno.
42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.	42 Quivi adunque a motivo della Parasceve de' Giudei, perché il monumento era vicino, deposero Gesù.
