Deuteronomy 18

1 "The Levitical priests, that is, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings by fire to the LORD, and his rightful dues.	1 Les prêtres, les lévites, en un mot toute la tribu de Lévi, n’auront ni part, ni héritage au milieu d’Israël. Ils mangeront sur les sacrifices offerts à Yahvé et sur les offrandes.
2 They shall have no inheritance among their brethren; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them.	2 Lévi n’a pas d’héritage au milieu de ses frères, car Yahvé est son héritage, comme il le lui a dit.
3 And this shall be the priests' due from the people, from those offering a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the two cheeks and the stomach.	3 Voici quel sera le droit des prêtres vis-à-vis du peuple. Si on offre en sacrifice un bœuf ou un mouton, on donnera au prêtre l’épaule, les mâchoires et la panse.
4 The first fruits of your grain, of your wine and of your oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep, you shall give him.	4 Tu lui donneras les prémices de ton blé, de ton vin et de ton huile, et les prémices de la laine de ton petit bétail;
5 For the LORD your God has chosen him out of all your tribes, to stand and minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.	5 car Yahvé ton Dieu l’a choisi parmi toutes les tribus pour que ses fils soient tous les jours au service de son Nom.
6 "And if a Levite comes from any of your towns out of all Israel, where he lives--and he may come when he desires--to the place which the LORD will choose,	6 Si un Lévite, quelle que soit la ville où il réside en Israël, désire s’installer au lieu que Yahvé aura choisi,
7 then he may minister in the name of the LORD his God, like all his fellow-Levites who stand to minister there before the LORD.	7 il pourra se mettre au service du Nom de Yahvé son Dieu, comme tous ses frères lévites qui se tiennent là au service de Yahvé.
8 They shall have equal portions to eat, besides what he receives from the sale of his patrimony.	8 Il recevra avec eux sa part de nourriture, en plus des produits de son patrimoine.
9 "When you come into the land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.	9 Lorsque tu seras entré dans le pays que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne, tu ne suivras pas les coutumes abominables des nations.
10 There shall not be found among you any one who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, any one who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer,	10 On ne trouvera personne chez toi qui fasse passer son fils ou sa fille par le feu, ou qui pratique la divination ou l’astrologie, la magie ou la sorcellerie;
11 or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer.	11 personne qui se livre à la superstition, qui consulte les esprits ou les augures et interroge les morts.
12 For whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD; and because of these abominable practices the LORD your God is driving them out before you.	12 Yahvé a en horreur celui qui agit de la sorte, et c’est bien à cause de ces pratiques abominables que Yahvé ton Dieu dépossède ces peuplades devant toi.
13 You shall be blameless before the LORD your God.	13 Tu seras donc sans reproche au regard de Yahvé ton Dieu.
14 For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, give heed to soothsayers and to diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you so to do.	14 Ces peuplades que tu vas dépouiller écoutent des devins et des magiciens, mais à toi, Yahvé ton Dieu t’a donné quelque chose d’autre.
15 "The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brethren--him you shall heed--	15 Du milieu de toi, du milieu de tes frères, Yahvé ton Dieu fera que se lève pour toi un prophète comme moi, et c’est lui que vous écouterez.
16 just as you desired of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, or see this great fire any more, lest I die.'	16 C’est bien ce que tu as demandé à Yahvé ton Dieu au jour de l’assemblée, au mont Horeb. Tu as dit: “Je ne peux pas supporter plus longtemps la voix de Yahvé mon Dieu et ce feu terrible; un peu plus et je meurs!”
17 And the LORD said to me, 'They have rightly said all that they have spoken.	17 Alors Yahvé m’a dit: “Voilà une parole juste. C’est pourquoi, du milieu de leurs frères,
18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brethren; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.	18 je ferai que se lève pour eux un prophète comme toi et je mettrai mes paroles dans sa bouche. Et lui leur dira tout ce que je lui commanderai.
19 And whoever will not give heed to my words which he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.	19 Si quelqu’un n’écoute pas ce que le prophète dira en mon nom, je lui en demanderai compte.
20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.'	20 Mais si un prophète ose dire en mon nom une parole que je ne lui ai pas commandé de dire, ou s’il parle au nom d’autres dieux, je le ferai mourir.”
21 And if you say in your heart, 'How may we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?--	21 Tu te demanderas sans doute: “Comment reconnaîtrons-nous la parole qui ne vient pas de Yahvé?”
22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously, you need not be afraid of him.	22 Si le prophète parle au nom de Yahvé et que sa prédiction ne se réalise pas, c’est la preuve que cette parole ne vient pas de Yahvé; ce prophète a parlé comme un prétentieux, tu n’auras donc pas peur de lui.
