Daniel 1

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.	1 Joakimnak, Júda királyának harmadik esztendejében Nebukadnezár, Babilon királya, felvonult Jeruzsálem ellen és ostrom alá vette.
2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god.	2 Az Úr a kezébe adta Joakimot, Júda királyát, és az Isten háza edényeinek egy részét, s ő elvitte ezeket Sinneár földjére, istenének házába, és bevitte az edényeket istenének kincstárába.

5 The king assigned them a daily portion of the rich food which the king ate, and of the wine which he drank. 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Misha-el he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.	7 akiknek az udvari tisztek főnöke más nevet adott: Dánielt Baltazárnak, Ananját Sidráknak, Misaélt Misáknak, és Azarját Abdenágónak nevezte el.
8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's rich food, or with the wine which he drank; therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.	8 Dániel azonban elhatározta szívében, hogy nem szennyezi be magát a király ételeivel és azzal a borral, amelyet az ivott; arra kérte tehát az udvari tisztek főnökét, hogy ne kelljen magát beszennyeznie.
9 And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs;	9 Isten kegyelmet és irgalmat ébresztett Dániel iránt az udvari tisztek főnökében,
10 and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, "I fear lest my lord the king, who appointed your food and your drink, should see that you were in poorer condition than the youths who are of your own age. 11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Misha-el, and Azariah;	11 Azt mondta erre Dániel a felügyelőnek, akit az udvari tisztek főnöke Dániel, Ananja, Misaél és Azarja fölé rendelt:
12 "Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.	12 »Tégy, kérlek, tíz napig próbát velünk, szolgáiddal, és adjanak nekünk enni növényi ételt, inni pedig vizet.
13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's rich food be observed by you, and according to what you see deal with your servants."	13 Aztán nézd meg majd a mi arcunkat és azoknak az ifjaknak az arcát, akik a király ételét eszik, és tégy szolgáiddal tapasztalatod szerint.«
14 So he hearkened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days.	14 Az hallgatott is erre a beszédre, és próbára tette őket tíz napig.
15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king's rich food.	15 Tíz nap múlva az ő külsejük szebbnek és teltebbnek látszott, mint mindazoké az ifjaké, akik a király ételét ették.
16 So the steward took away their rich food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.	16 Ettől fogva a felügyelő beszüntette a nekik szánt eledelt és boritalt, és növényi ételt adott nekik.
17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all letters and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.	17 Ezeknek az ifjaknak Isten tudományt és jártasságot adott minden könyvben és bölcsességben, Dánielnek pedig minden látomás és álom megértését is.
18 At the end of the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.	18 Mikor pedig elmúlt az az idő, amely után a király parancsa szerint be kellett őket vinni, az udvari tisztek főnöke bevezette őket Nebukadnezár színe elé.
19 And the king spoke with them, and among them all none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Misha-el, and Azariah; therefore they stood before the king.	19 Amikor a király beszédbe elegyedett velük, úgy találta, hogy az összes között nincs senki olyan, mint Dániel, Ananja, Misaél és Azarja. Ők aztán a király szolgálatába álltak.
20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom.	20 Minden olyan dologban, amely bölcsességet és értelmességet kívánt, és amelyet tőlük kérdezett, a király tízszerte különbeknek találta őket, mint egész országa valamennyi jósát és varázslóját.
21 And Daniel continued until the first year of King Cyrus.	21 Így volt ott Dániel Círusz király első esztendejéig.
