Jeremiah 38

1 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah was saying to all the people,	1 Sefatías, hijo de Matán, Guedalías, hijo de Pasjur, Iucal, hijo de Selemías, y Pasjur, hijo de Malquías, oyeron las palabras que Jeremías decía a todo el pueblo:
2 "Thus says the LORD, He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live; he shall have his life as a prize of war, and live.	2 «Así habla el Señor: El que permanezca en esta ciudad morirá por la espada, el hambre y la peste; el que se rinda a los caldeos vivirá y su vida será para él un botín: sí, él quedará con vida.
3 Thus says the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken."	3 Así habla el Señor: Esta ciudad será entregada al ejército del rey de Babilonia, y este la tomará».
4 Then the princes said to the king, "Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm."	4 Los jefes dijeron al rey: «Que este hombre sea condenado a muerte, porque con semejantes discursos desmoraliza a los hombres de guerra que aún quedan en esta ciudad, y a todo el pueblo. No, este hombre no busca el bien del pueblo, sino su desgracia».
5 King Zedekiah said, "Behold, he is in your hands; for the king can do nothing against you."	5 El rey Sedecías respondió: «Ahí lo tienen en sus manos, porque el rey ya no puede nada contra ustedes».
6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mire, and Jeremiah sank in the mire.	6 Entonces ellos tomaron a Jeremías y lo arrojaron al aljibe de Malquías, hijo del rey, que estaba en el patio de la guardia, descolgándolo con cuerdas. En el aljibe no había agua sino sólo barro, y Jeremías se hundió en el barro.
7 When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern--the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate--	7 Ebed Mélec, el cusita, un eunuco de la casa del rey, se enteró de que habían puesto a Jeremías en el aljibe. Mientras el rey estaba sentado a la puerta de Benjamín,
8 Ebed-melech went from the king's house and said to the king,	8 Ebed Mélec salió de la casa del rey y le dijo:
9 "My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern; and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city."	9 «Rey, mi señor, esos hombres han obrado mal tratando así a Jeremías; lo han arrojado al aljibe, y allí abajo morirá de hambre, porque ya no hay pan en la ciudad».
10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech, the Ethiopian, "Take three men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies."	10 El rey dio esta orden a Ebed Mélec, el cusita: «Toma de aquí a tres hombres contigo, y saca del aljibe a Jeremías, el profeta, antes de que muera».
11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe of the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes.	11 Ebed Mélec tomó consigo a tres hombres y entró en la casa del rey, en el vestuario; tomó de allí unos trapos y unos vestidos viejos, y se los hizo llegar a Jeremías con unas cuerdas, dentro del aljibe.
12 Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, "Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes." Jeremiah did so.	12 Ebed Mélec, el cusita, dijo a Jeremías: «Colócate estos trapos y estos vestidos viejos entre las axilas y las cuerdas». Jeremías lo hizo así.
13 Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.	13 Ellos tiraron a Jeremías con las cuerdas y lo sacaron del aljibe. Y Jeremías permaneció en el patio de la guardia.
14 King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the LORD. The king said to Jeremiah, "I will ask you a question; hide nothing from me."	14 El rey Sedecías mandó que le trajeran a Jeremías, el profeta, a la tercera entrada de la Casa del Señor. El rey dijo a Jeremías: «Tengo que preguntarte una cosa; no me ocultes nada».
15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I tell you, will you not be sure to put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me."	15 Jeremías respondió a Sedecías: «Si te la digo, seguro que me harás morir; y si te doy un consejo, no me escucharás».
16 Then King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, "As the LORD lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life."	16 Pero el rey Sedecías hizo este juramento a Jeremías, en secreto: «¡Por la vida del Señor que nos ha dado la vida, no te haré morir ni te pondré en manos de los hombres que atentan contra tu vida!».
17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "Thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, If you will surrender to the princes of the king of Babylon, then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live.	17 Jeremías dijo a Sedecías: «Así habla el Señor, Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: Si te rindes a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, tu vida estará a salvo, y esta ciudad no será incendiada: vivirás tú, y también tu familia.
18 But if you do not surrender to the princes of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand."	18 Pero si no te rindes a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad será entregada en manos de los caldeos e incendiada, y tú no escaparás de sus manos».
19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "I am afraid of the Jews who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they abuse me."	19 El rey Sedecías dijo a Jeremías: «Estoy preocupado por los judíos que se pasaron al enemigo; temo que los caldeos me entreguen en sus manos, y ellos me traten desconsideradamente».
20 Jeremiah said, "You shall not be given to them. Obey now the voice of the LORD in what I say to you, and it shall be well with you, and your life shall be spared.	20 Jeremías respondió: «No te entregarán. Escucha entonces la voz del Señor en esto que yo te digo; así te irá bien y estará a salvo tu vida.
21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is the vision which the LORD has shown to me:	21 Pero si te niegas a rendirte, esto es lo que el Señor me hizo ver:
22 Behold, all the women left in the house of the king of Judah were being led out to the princes of the king of Babylon and were saying, 'Your trusted friends have deceived you and prevailed against you; now that your feet are sunk in the mire, they turn away from you.'	22 todas las mujeres que aún quedan en la casa del rey de Judá serán llevadas a los jefes de los caldeos, y ellas dirán: ¡Te han seducido y han podido contra ti tus amigos más íntimos! Apenas tus pies se hundieron en el fango, ellos se echaron por atrás.
23 All your wives and your sons shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon; and this city shall be burned with fire."	23 A todas tus mujeres y a tus hijos se los llevarán a los caldeos; y tú mismo no escaparás de sus manos, sino que caerás en manos del rey de Babilonia. En cuanto a esta ciudad, será consumida por el fuego».
24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Let no one know of these words and you shall not die.	24 Sedecías dijo a Jeremías: «Que nadie se entere de estas palabras, y tú no morirás.
25 If the princes hear that I have spoken with you and come to you and say to you, 'Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death,'	25 Si los jefes se enteran de que yo hablé contigo, y vienen a decirte: «Infórmanos sobre lo que has dicho al rey y sobre lo que él te dijo; no nos ocultes nada y no te haremos morir»,
26 then you shall say to them, 'I made a humble plea to the king that he would not send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.'"	26 tú les dirás: «He pedido encarecidamente al rey que no me haga volver a la casa de Jonatán, a morir allí».
27 Then all the princes came to Jeremiah and asked him, and he answered them as the king had instructed him. So they left off speaking with him, for the conversation had not been overheard.	27 Todos los jefes, en efecto, fueron a ver a Jeremías y lo interrogaron. 28 And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.	28 Jeremías permaneció en el patio de la guardia hasta el día en que Jerusalén fue tomada. Y él estaba allí cuando Jerusalén fue tomada.
