Jeremiah 10

1 Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.	1 Ascoltate la parola che il Signore ha detta sopra di voi, o casa d'Israele.
2 Thus says the LORD: "Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them,	2 Ecco quanto dice il Signore: « Non imparate il modo di fare delle nazioni, non vi spaventate per i segni del cielo, temuti dalle nazioni,
3 for the customs of the peoples are false. A tree from the forest is cut down, and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.	3 perché le leggi dei popoli son vane: infatti nel bosco vien tagliato un legno, vien poi lavorato dalle inani dell'artefice coll'ascia,
4 Men deck it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move.	4 viene adornato d'argento e d'oro, e ne sono unite le parti con chiodi e martelli, perchè non vada in pezzi.
5 Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Be not afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good."	5 Son fatti simili a palme, e non parlano, bisogna portarli, alzarli, perchè non posson camminare. Non li temete dunque, perchè non posson fare nè male, nè bene.
6 There is none like thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.	6 Nessuno è simile a te, o Signore; tu sei grande e grande è nella potenza il tuo nome.
7 Who would not fear thee, O King of the nations? For this is thy due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like thee.	7 Chi non ti temerà, o re delle nazioni? Tua è la gloria: fra tutti i sapienti delle nazioni, e in tutti i loro regni non c'è nessuno simile a te.
8 They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but wood!	8 Tutti senza distinzione saran riconosciuti come stolti e insensati. Argomento della loro vanità è il legno.
9 Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their clothing is violet and purple; they are all the work of skilled men.	9 Si porta da Tarsis l'argento ridotto in lamine e da Ofaz l'oro, opera dell'artefice, lavoro del bronzista; si ricopre di giacinto e di porpora: tutto questo è lavoro d'artefici.
10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation.	10 Ma il Signore è il vero Dio, Egli è il Dio vivente, il re eterno: al suo sdegno tremerà la terra e,le nazioni non potran sostenere le sue minacce.
11 Thus shall you say to them: "The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens."	11 Così dunque direte loro: « Gli dèi che non han fatto il cielo e la terra spariscano dalla terra e da ciò che è sotto il cielo ».
12 It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.	12 Egli colla sua potenza fece la terra, colla sua sapienza regola il mondo, colla sua prudenza stende i cieli.
13 When he utters his voice there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.	13 Ad una sua voce accumula nel cielo le acque, fa salire le nubi dal l'estremità della terra, scioglie i fulmini in pioggia, e fa uscire i venti dai suoi nascondigli.
14 Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols; for his images are false, and there is no breath in them.	14 Ogni uomo è divenuto stolto, non sa niente, ogni artefice è svergognato dall'idolo, perchè ciò che egli ha fuso è menzogna, e non v'è spirito.
15 They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish.	15 Son cose vane ed opere degne di riso, e nel tempo del loro castigo periranno.
16 Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the LORD of hosts is his name.	16 Non è simile a queste cose la parte di Giacobbe: è lui quello che ha formate tutte le cose, e Israele è la verga della sua eredità, Egli si chiama Signore degli eserciti.
17 Gather up your bundle from the ground, O you who dwell under siege!	17 Raduna dalla terra la tua confusione? tu che sei assediata.
18 For thus says the LORD: "Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will bring distress on them, that they may feel it."	18 Perché queste cose dice il Signore: « Ecco che questa volta io getterò lontano gli abitanti del paese, e li affliggerò in modo che sian trovati.
19 Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous. But I said, "Truly this is an affliction, and I must bear it."	19 O me sventurata per la mia rovina! La mia piaga è atroce; ma io ho detto: Questo male è del tutto mio, e dovrò sopportarlo.
20 My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken; my children have gone from me, and they are not; there is no one to spread my tent again, and to set up my curtains.	20 La mia tenda è atterrata, tutte le mie corde son rotte, i miei figli mi hanno abbandonata e non esiston più, non v'è più chi rizzi ancora la mia tenda, chi alzi i miei padiglioni.
21 For the shepherds are stupid, and do not inquire of the LORD; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered.	21 Perché i pastori hanno agito da stolti e non han cercato il Signore, per questo non han compreso, e tutto il loro gregge s'è disperso.
22 Hark, a rumor! Behold, it comes!--a great commotion out of the north country to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a lair of jackals.	22 Il rumore che si fa sentire, ecco s'avvicina, gran tumulto vien dalle terre del settentrione, a ridurre le città di Giuda in deserti, in tane di dragoni.
23 I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.	23 Io lo so, o Signore, che l'uomo non è padrone della sua via, che non dipende dall'uomo il camminare e il regolare i suoi passi.
24 Correct me, O LORD, but in just measure; not in thy anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.	24 Castigami, o Signore, ma con giudizio, non nel tuo furore, per non annientarmi.
25 Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the peoples that call not on thy name; for they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.	25 Effondi il tuo sdegno sopra le nazioni che non ti conoscono, sopra le regioni che non invocano il tuo nome, perchè esse hanno mangiato Giacobbe, l'han divorato, l'han distrutto, ed han fatta svanire la sua gloria ».
